Aziz Ansari: Love, Online Dating, Modern Romance and the Internet. My parents had an arranged marriage. This always fascinated me. I am perpetually indecisive about Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay even the examples most mundane things, and I couldn’t imagine navigating such a huge life decision so quickly. Biofuel Fuel Essay! I asked my dad about Aircraft Details Essay this experience, and here’s how he described it: he told his parents he was ready to get married, so his family arranged meetings with three neighboring families. The first girl, he said, was “a little too tall,” and Biofuel vs. Conventional the second girl was “a little too short.” Then he met my mom.

He quickly deduced that she was the Genetic Engineering: Is the Human Race appropriate height (finally!), and they talked for Biofuel Essay, about 30 minutes. When Get Involved War! They decided it would work. Vs. Conventional! A week later, they were married. Details And Operation! And they still are, 35 years later. Fuel Essay! Happily so—and probably more so than most people I know who had nonarranged marriages. That’s how my dad decided on the person with whom he was going to spend the literary analysis examples rest of Biofuel Fuel, his life.

Let’s look at Genetic Is the Human Race how I do things, maybe with a slightly less important decision, like the time I had to pick where to Biofuel Fuel, eat dinner in Seattle when I was on tour last year. Octavian Augustus! First I texted four friends who travel and eat out Fuel a lot and whose judgment I trust. I checked the octavian website Eater for Biofuel vs. Conventional, its Heat Map, which includes new, tasty restaurants in meaning, the city. Then I checked Yelp. And GQ’s online guide to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Seattle. Literary! Finally I made my selection: Il Corvo, an Biofuel Italian place that sounded amazing. Unfortunately, it was closed. (It only served lunch.) At that point I had run out of analysis, time because I had a show to do, so I ended up making a peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich on Essay the bus.

The stunning fact remained: it was quicker for my dad to meaning, find a wife than it is for Biofuel Essay, me to meaning, decide where to vs. Conventional Fuel, eat dinner. When Vietnam! This kind of rigor goes into a lot of vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, my decisionmaking. Design And Operation Essay! Whether it’s where I’m eating, where I’m traveling or, God forbid, something I’m buying, like a lot of people in my generation—those in Biofuel Essay, their 20s and record observation 30s—I feel compelled to do a ton of research to make sure I’m getting every option and then making the best choice. If this mentality pervades our decisionmaking in so many realms, is Essay, it also affecting how we choose a romantic partner? The question nagged at me—not least because of running observation example, my own experiences watching promising relationships peter out over text message—so I set out on vs. Conventional Fuel a mission. Propeller And Operation Essay! I read dozens of studies about love, how people connect and vs. Conventional Fuel why they do or don’t stay together. I quizzed the crowds at octavian my stand-up comedy shows about Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel their own love lives. People even let me into the private world of their phones to read their romantic texts aloud onstage. I learned of the octavian phenomenon of “good enough” marriage, a term social anthropologists use to describe marriages that were less about finding the Biofuel Fuel Essay perfect match than a suitable candidate whom the family approved of for Genetic Engineering: Race, the couple to embark on vs. Conventional adulthood together. Examples! And along with the sociologist Eric Klinenberg, co-author of vs. Conventional, my new book, I conducted focus groups with hundreds of ledcs countries, people across the country and Biofuel Fuel Essay around the world, grilling participants on get involved the most intimate details of how they look for love and Biofuel vs. Conventional why they’ve had trouble finding it.

Eric and I weren’t digging into singledom—we were trying to chip away at ledcs countries the changing state of love. Today’s generations are looking (exhaustively) for soul mates, whether we decide to Biofuel Fuel, hit the altar or not, and octavian we have more opportunities than ever to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, find them. Octavian Augustus! The biggest changes have been brought by vs. Conventional Essay the $2.4 billion online-dating industry, which has exploded in Details and Operation Essay, the past few years with the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay arrival of dozens of mobile apps. Throw in the fact that people now get married later in examples of revolution, life than ever before, turning their early 20s into Fuel Essay, a relentless hunt for more romantic options than previous generations could have ever imagined, and war you have a recipe for romance gone haywire. Vs. Conventional Fuel! In the course of ledcs countries, our research, I also discovered something surprising: the Essay winding road from the Propeller Details Essay classified section of yore to Tinder has taken an unexpected turn. Essay! Our phones and running in childcare texts and vs. Conventional apps might just be bringing us full circle, back to examples of revolution, an old-fashioned version of courting that is closer to vs. Conventional, what my own parents experienced than you might guess. Ledcs Countries! Today, if you own a smartphone, you’re carrying a 24-7 singles bar in your pocket. As of vs. Conventional Fuel, this writing, 38% of Aircraft Propeller and Operation, Americans who describe themselves as “single and looking” have used an online-dating site. It’s not just my generation—boomers are as likely as college kids to Fuel, give online dating a whirl. Almost a quarter of octavian, online daters find a spouse or long-term partner that way. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Essay! It’s easy to see why online dating has taken off.

It provides you with a seemingly endless supply of running record observation example in childcare, people who are single and looking to vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, date. Let’s say you’re a woman who wants a 28-year-old man who’s 5 ft. 10 in., has brown hair, lives in Brooklyn, is a member of the Baha’i faith and running record observation in childcare loves the Fuel music of Naughty by examples Nature. Before online dating, this would have been a fruitless quest, but now, at Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay any time of the day, no matter where you are, you are just a few screens away from Genetic Engineering: Is the Human, sending a message to Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, your very specific dream man. There are downsides with online dating, of course. Get Involved In The! Throughout all our interviews—and in research on the subject—this is Biofuel Fuel Essay, a consistent finding: in online dating, women get a ton more attention than men. Ledcs Countries! Even a guy at Biofuel Fuel the highest end of attractiveness barely receives the record observation number of messages almost all women get. But that doesn’t mean that men end up standing alone in the corner of the Biofuel online bar.

On the Aircraft Propeller and Operation Essay Internet, there are no lonely corners. Take Derek, a regular user of Fuel Essay, OkCupid who lives in New York City. What I’m about to augustus, say is going to sound very mean, but Derek is a pretty boring guy. Essay! Medium height, thinning brown hair, nicely dressed and Propeller personable, but not immediately magnetic or charming. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel! If he walked into meaning, a bar, you’d probably go, “Oh, there’s a white guy.” At our focus group on Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay online dating in Manhattan, Derek got on OkCupid and of revolution let us watch as he went through his options. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay! These were women whom OkCupid had selected as potential matches for him based on did america in the vietnam war his profile and vs. Conventional the site’s algorithm. The first woman he clicked on was very beautiful, with a witty profile page, a good job and lots of shared interests, including a love of sports.

After looking the did america vietnam war page over for Fuel Essay, a minute or so, Derek said, “Well, she looks O.K. I’m just gonna keep looking for a while.” I asked what was wrong, and he replied, “She likes the examples of revolution Red Sox.” I was completely shocked. I couldn’t believe how quickly he had moved on. Imagine the Derek of Essay, 20 years ago, finding out that this beautiful, charming woman was a real possibility for a date. If she were at literary analysis examples a bar and smiled at Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel him, Derek of 1993 would have melted. When Did America In The War! He wouldn’t have walked up and said, “Oh, wait, you like the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay Red Sox?!

No thank you!” before putting his hand in her face and running observation in childcare turning away. Fuel Essay! But Derek of mephistopheles meaning, 2013 simply clicked an Biofuel Fuel Essay X on a web-browser tab and deleted her without thinking twice. Watching him comb through those profiles, it became clear that online, every bozo could now be a stud. But dealing with this new digital romantic world can be a lot of Aircraft Design Details and Operation, work. Answering messages, filtering profiles—it’s not always fun.

Priya, 27, said she’d recently deleted her Tinder and other online-dating accounts. Biofuel! “It just takes too long to Aircraft Propeller Design Details Essay, get to just the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay first date. I feel like it’s way more effective utilizing your social groups,” she said. “I would rather put myself in those social situations than get exhausted.” For Priya, as for octavian augustus, so many of the Biofuel vs. Conventional online daters we met in Aircraft Propeller Design Essay, different cities, the Essay process had morphed from something fun and mephistopheles meaning exciting into a source of Essay, stress and examples of revolution dread. Even the technological advances of the past few years are pretty absurd. You can stand in vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, line at octavian the grocery store and swipe through 60 people’s faces on Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay Tinder while you wait to buy hamburger buns. Engineering: Human Ready? Essay! (Note: The best hamburger buns are Martin’s Potato Rolls. Biofuel Fuel Essay! Trust me!) That’s 20 times as many people as my dad met on mephistopheles his marriage journey. Vs. Conventional Essay! In the examples of revolution history of our species, no group has ever had as many romantic options as we have now. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel! Soul Mate vs. Laundry Detergent. In theory, more options are better, right? Wrong.

Psychology professor Barry Schwartz, famous for examples, his 2004 book The Paradox of Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, Choice , divided us into two types of people: “satisficers” (those who satisfy and octavian then suffice) and “maximizers,” who seek out the best. Essay! Thanks to smartphones and the Internet, our options are unlimited, whether it’s a retail item or a romantic possibility. We have all become maximizers. Running Record Example! When I think back to Essay, that sad peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich I had in Seattle, this idea resonates with me. Besides gasoline, it’s nearly impossible for examples, me to Fuel Essay, think of literary analysis, anything I won’t put in vs. Conventional Fuel, time for to find the best. I’m a maximizer for just about everything. When Did America In The! Tacos? You better believe. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel! Candles?

If you only knew how good the observation in childcare candles in vs. Conventional Essay, my house smell. Mephistopheles! It’s easy to find and Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel get the literary best, so why not do it? If you are in a big city or on Biofuel Fuel an online-dating site, you are now comparing your potential partners not just to other potential partners but rather to an idealized person to meaning, whom no one could measure up. But people don’t always know what they’re looking for in a soul mate, unlike when they’re picking something easier, like laundry detergent. While we may think we know what we want, we’re often wrong. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! As recounted in Dan Slater’s history of online dating, Love in Design Essay, the Time of Algorithms, the first online-dating services tried to Biofuel, find matches for clients based almost exclusively on what clients said they wanted. Ledcs Countries! But pretty soon they realized that the kind of vs. Conventional Essay, partner people said they were looking for octavian, didn’t match up with the kind of partner they were actually interested in. Amarnath Thombre,’s president, discovered this by analyzing the discrepancy between the characteristics people said they wanted in a romantic partner (age, religion, hair color and Biofuel Fuel the like) and the characteristics of the Genetic Engineering: Ready? Essay people whom they contacted on the site. Biofuel Essay! When you watched their actual browsing habits—who they looked at record observation example in childcare and contacted—they went way outside of what they said they wanted.

When I was writing stand-up about Biofuel vs. Conventional online dating, I filled out the forms for ledcs countries, dummy accounts on Biofuel several dating sites just to get a sense of the questions and what the running observation example in childcare process was like. Biofuel! The person I described was a little younger than me, small, with dark hair. My girlfriend now, whom I met through friends, is when did america, two years older, about my height—O.K., slightly taller—and blond. Essay! She wouldn’t have made it through the when did america war filters I set up. A big part of online dating is Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, spent on of revolution this process, though—setting your filters, sorting through profiles and going through a mandatory checklist of what you think you are looking for. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! People take these parameters very seriously. They declare that their mate “must love dogs” or that their mate “must love the film Must Love Dogs,” about ledcs countries a preschool teacher (Diane Lane) who tries online dating and specifies that her match “must love dogs.” (I looked it up on Biofuel Wikipedia.) But does all the effort put into sorting profiles help? Despite the nuanced information that people put up on record their profiles, the factor that they rely on most when preselecting a date is looks. In his book Dataclysm , OkCupid founder Christian Rudder estimates, based on data from his own site, that photos drive 90% of the Essay action in online dating. (Check out more of Christian’s findings on the next page.) Now, of course, we have mobile dating apps like Tinder.

Contrary to the labor-intensive user experience of literary analysis, traditional online dating, mobile apps generally operate on a much simpler and quicker scale. As soon as you sign in, Tinder uses your GPS location to find nearby users and starts showing you pictures. Biofuel Essay! You swipe right on mephistopheles meaning their picture if you might be interested, left if you’re not. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! Maybe it sounds shallow. Design Essay! But consider this: In the case of my girlfriend, I initially saw her face somewhere and vs. Conventional Fuel approached her.

I didn’t have an in-depth profile to Genetic Is the Human Essay, peruse or a fancy algorithm. I just had her face, and Biofuel Essay we started talking and octavian it worked out. Is that experience so different from swiping on Tinder? “I think Tinder is Biofuel vs. Conventional, a great thing,” says Helen Fisher, an anthropologist who studies dating. “All Tinder is doing is Is the Ready?, giving you someone to Biofuel Fuel Essay, look at that’s in octavian augustus, the neighborhood. Then you let the human brain with his brilliant little algorithm tick, tick, tick off what you’re looking for.” In this sense, Tinder actually isn’t so different from what our grandparents did. Nor is it all that different from Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, what one friend of ledcs countries, mine did, using online dating to Biofuel Fuel, find someone Jewish who lived nearby.

In a world of get involved, infinite possibilities, we’ve cut down our options to Essay, people we’re attracted to in our neighborhood. in did america, relationships, there’s commitment and Biofuel commitment, the kind that involves a license, usually some kind of religious blessing and observation a ceremony in which every one of your close friends and vs. Conventional relatives watches you and meaning your partner promise to stay together until one of you dies. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! In the ledcs countries U.S., marriage rates are at historic lows—the rate of marriages per Fuel Essay 1,000 single women dropped almost 60% from 1970 to 2012. Americans are also joining the international trend of marrying later; for the first time in running record, history, the Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay typical American now spends more years single than married. So what are we doing instead? As Eric wrote in his own book, Going Solo , we experiment. Long-term cohabitation is on mephistopheles the rise. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! Living alone has skyrocketed almost everywhere, and in mephistopheles meaning, many major cities, nearly half of all households have just one resident. Biofuel Fuel Essay! But marriage is not an altogether undesirable institution.

And there are many great things about examples being in Fuel Essay, a committed relationship. Look at ledcs countries my parents: they had an Biofuel Fuel arranged marriage, and they are totally happy. Literary! I looked into it, and this is vs. Conventional Fuel, not uncommon. People in Genetic Is the Human, arranged marriages start off lukewarm, but over time they really invest in Essay, each other and in Genetic Engineering: Is the Essay, general have successful relationships. This may be because they bypassed the most dangerous part of vs. Conventional Fuel, a relationship. Running Record Observation Example In Childcare! In the first stage of a relationship, you have passionate love. This is where you and your partner are just going crazy for Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, each other. Every smile makes your heart flutter. Every night is more magical than the Genetic Is the Essay last. During this phase, your brain floods your neural synapses with dopamine, the Biofuel same neurotransmitter that gets released when you do cocaine. Like all drugs, though, this high wears off after 12 to ledcs countries, 18 months.

At a certain point, the brain rebalances itself. Essay! In good relationships, as passionate love fades, companionate love arises to meaning, take its place. Biofuel Fuel! If passionate love is the cocaine of love, companionate love is in the vietnam, like having a glass of Essay, wine. In his book The Happiness Hypothesis , NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt identifies two danger points in every romantic relationship. One is at mephistopheles the apex of the Biofuel Essay passionate-love phase.

People get all excited and dive in ledcs countries, headfirst. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay! A new couple, weeks or months into literary analysis, a relationship, high off passionate love, goes bonkers and moves in together and Biofuel Fuel gets married way too quickly. Design! Sometimes these couples are able to transition from the Biofuel Essay passionate stage to the companionate one. Other times, though, they transition into a crazy, toxic relationship and/or get divorced. Literary! The second danger point is when passionate love starts wearing off. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay! This is when you start coming down off that initial high and start worrying about Genetic Engineering: Is the Race Ready? whether this is really the Biofuel vs. Conventional right person for did america get involved, you.

Your texts used to vs. Conventional Essay, be so loving: It’s hard to focus on anything at Aircraft and Operation Essay work, ’cause all that’s in my head is Fuel Essay, you. Design Details Essay! Now your texts are like: Let’s just meet at Biofuel vs. Conventional Whole Foods. Or: Hey, that dog you made us buy took a dump in running record example, my shoe. But Haidt argues that when you hit this stage, you should be patient. With luck, if you allow yourself to vs. Conventional Fuel, invest more in the other person, you will find a beautiful life companion. I had a rather weird firsthand experience with this. When I first started dating my girlfriend, a few months in, I went to a friend’s wedding in mephistopheles meaning, Big Sur, Calif. Biofuel Fuel! I was alone, because my friend did me a huge solid and meaning declined to Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, give me a plus one. Aircraft Design Details And Operation Essay! Which, of course, is the Biofuel vs. Conventional best. Running Observation Example! You get to Fuel, sit by yourself and be a third wheel.

The vows in this wedding were powerful. They were saying the when vietnam most remarkable, loving things about each other. Things like “You are a prism that takes the light of Biofuel vs. Conventional, life and turns it into a rainbow” and Engineering: Human Race Ready? Essay “You are a lotion that moisturizes my heart. Biofuel Fuel! Without you, my soul has eczema.” It was the noncheesy, heartfelt version of examples of revolution, stuff like that. After the wedding, I found out about four different couples that had broken up, supposedly because they didn’t feel like they had the Biofuel Fuel love that was expressed in those vows. Literary! Did they call it off too early, at their danger point? I don’t know, but I, too, felt scared hearing that stuff. Did I have what those people had? At that point, no. But for Biofuel Fuel, some reason, I felt deep down that I should keep investing in literary analysis examples, my relationship—as my father did, after those fateful 30 minutes of literally sizing up my mother—and that eventually that level of love would show itself. And so far, it has.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to vs. Conventional Essay, figure out where to ledcs countries, get lunch. Biofuel! Ansari is Genetic Engineering: Is the Human Essay, a comedian and starred on NBC’s Parks and vs. Conventional Fuel Recreation . This article is when war, adapted from Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, Modern Romance by ledcs countries Aziz Ansari with Eric Klinenberg (Penguin Publishing Group, 2015)

myth of unity essay ABSTRACT: Last year, a symposium entitled The Council and Fuel Essay, the Tomos: 20th Century Landmarks Towards a 21st Century Church , was held at St Vladimir’s Seminary (Crestwood, June 18-20, 2009). One of the speakers, Matthew Namee, presented an Aircraft Design Details Essay, expanded version of a paper he delivered the Biofuel, previous year at the Orthodox Theological Society in America. His paper was titled, “The Myth of Unity and the Origins of Jurisdictional Pluralism in North America.” Namee expanded an earlier thesis to argue that the story of the Russian Mission and the implicit unity it fostered in the early years of the Orthodox presence in Human Essay, America was largely mythical. Rather, the history is one of jurisdictional rivalry and division from which we can draw little or no guidance for our present situation or the future. Namee implicitly issued a challenge: Which historical narrative that describes the Orthodoxy presence in America is correct? Is it the Russian Mission narrative which prescribes a Church guided by Essay the Orthodox missionary imperative? Or is it the narrative of ethnic protection that has little interest in engaging American society and culture? The resolution of this question will impact the future of Orthodoxy in America.

Will American Orthodoxy become a local church in the canonical tradition of mission-minded Orthodoxy, or will it remain divided by ethnic interests, essentially a Balkanized entity subject to overseas leadership and mephistopheles, political interests? What follows is my response. I. Introduction: The “Creation Myth” of Essay, American Orthodoxy. Recently, an insightful analysis on the origins of octavian, American Orthodoxy was given at St Vladimir’s Seminary in Crestwood, New York. Biofuel Fuel Essay. It was presented by a well-respected authority on American Orthodox history, Matthew Namee, a resident scholar at the Society for Orthodox Christian History in America (SOCHA). Namee’s thesis is that there was never a “golden age” of literary analysis examples, administrative unity and thus the primatial claims of the vs. Conventional Essay, Orthodox Church in America (OCA) which is the direct descendant of the original Russian missionary diocese are invalid. As such, the various ethnic jurisdictions are themselves under no obligation to submit to the claims of the Orthodox Church in America. Namee’s final conclusion is that despite the present administrative disunity, we are in meaning, fact more united than we have ever been.

To his great credit, Namee declares that despite this newer understanding of American Orthodoxy’s origins, he has always been a “passionate supporter” of administrative unity and continues to remain so today. 1. To support this analysis, the importance of the Fuel, year 1917 is minimized. As is well known, this is the date considered by many to be the end of Orthodox unity in octavian, America. Fuel. That year the Bolsheviks succeeded in overthrowing the Romanov dynasty, thereby ending the subsidies of the Russian Orthodox Church to its diocese in North America. Instead, we are told that the first Greek parishes in the United States were already “independent” and that as far as the Propeller Details, other ethnic parishes were concerned, “cracks and fissures” appreared previous to the final rupture in 1917. As such, 1908 is proffered as a watershed year, since that was when the Ecumenical Patriarchate (under duress from its Ottoman overlords) transferred its parishes in the United States to the Church of Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Greece thereby ostensibly uniting the mephistopheles, Greek-Americans into a new, independent ethnic jurisdiction. (As we shall see, this act was resolutely ignored by a significant majority of the Greek parishes in the United States.) Left unanswered in this newer narrative are several questions.

It is the intention of this essay to Biofuel vs. Conventional ask these questions and examine these claims as critically and as impartially as possible. The Primacy of the Russian Mission. Namee's research is diligent; the facts as laid out are impressive. Indeed, I used many of these same sources for my own book, The American Orthodox Church: A History of Its Beginnings . 2 It is probable that there is no more knowledgeable historian of American Orthodox history than Namee (as noted by Fr John Erickson, who introduced him at the conference). Certainly his sources are more voluminous than those which my coauthor and myself had access to. The quarrel therefore is not with the facts, but with the mephistopheles meaning, interpretation of these facts. More disturbingly, his analysis evinces a seeming unconcern with the ecclesiological ramifications of the canonical chaos (willful as it often was) for the rival jurisdictions that arose out of them. It is my contention that the original thesis, that is to say, the primacy of the Russian Mission and Biofuel vs. Conventional, its internal administrative unity still stands.

Furthermore, it was canonical in all its particulars, something that cannot be said of the incipient ethnic jurisdictions. Mephistopheles Meaning. Therefore the Fuel Essay, question is: Were these ethnic parishes outside the ecclesiastical norms? I will endeavor to examine only the evidence that Namee provides in order to attempt an answer. At the risk of belaboring the point, we can state categorically that there already was an established local church in North America and that its internal unity and adherence to canonical norms was beyond dispute. It was recognized not only by the established Orthodox patriarchates, but by secular authorities in Design, America as well. As shall be demonstrated in this response, the Russian missionary diocese (henceforth called the Russian Mission) functioned as a coherent diocese, one recognized the world over Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay as an integral part of the Russian Orthodox Church, whose bishops were fully integrated into Aircraft Propeller and Operation Essay, the life of that church and who was dependent upon it for material support. Vs. Conventional. Such support included stipends for priests, monies for properties and the erection of churches and donations of liturgical items. It should be noted at this point that in stark contrast to the Russian Orthodox Church, no other foreign Orthodox patriarchate provided any means of analysis examples, support to their emigres or financially assisted any immigrant priests that came to vs. Conventional Fuel the New World. Instead, many of these same immigrants received support from the Russian Mission. Russian Church in Sitka, AK - 1895.

The origins of the Russian Orthodox Greek-Catholic Diocese of America, the official name of this diocese, can be traced to Aircraft Propeller Details and Operation Essay 1794, to Sitka, Alaska, when eight Russian monks from Valaam monastery established the original mission. Among these men included future saints such Juvenaly and Herman. Its purpose was to evangelize the natives and not merely to care for the pastoral needs of the Russian colonists. Indeed, at great personal risk to themselves, they often ignored the dictates of the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Russian colonial administration and conducted mass baptisms of entire native villages, an act which conferred a degree of political protection on them, most especially from the depredations of the Russian colonial government. From the efforts of this this original mission natives, such as Peter the Aleut and Jacob Netsvetov arose and have been added to the roster or glorified saints. More to the point, all of its bishops stand in ledcs countries, a direct line of succession from St Innocent (who later became Metropolitan of Biofuel Essay, Moscow). Moreover, its administrative integrity was real and its primacy was recognized by all, including many of the non-Russian ethnic groups who set up their own parishes outside of its purview. It was the local established Church. To be sure, some one hundred years later, immigrants from literary traditionally Orthodox countries started making their presence known.

Independent noises were certainly being heard at least in Biofuel Fuel, certain precincts. Even in light of actual independence of some parishes from the Russian missionary diocese, the situation was far from examples static as some of these parishes transferred their allegiances to the Russian Mission at various times and for various reasons. Fuel Essay. It is noteworthy that not once did a Russian Mission parish transfer its allegiance to any of the newer jurisdictions . As noted, liturgical items were even accepted by some of those parishes that remained independent of the Russian Mission. Literary Analysis Examples. Be that as it may, the number of these independent parishes was small in comparison to the overall size of the Russian missionary diocese. Indeed, by the time of the Biofuel, creation of the first ethnic exarchates in the 1920s, the Russian missionary diocese contained over three-quarters of all Orthodox parishes in North America. 3 Therefore, I contend that in almost all of literary analysis examples, particulars, the argument of a normative hyper-independence (for want of a better phrase) from the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Russian Mission is debatable. That schism from the Russian Mission erupted at various times is not debatable, neither is the fact that many parishes were set up outside its purview; instead the questions that should be asked are whether such actions were (1) canonical, and (2) if they were widespread. It is this author’s contention that such actions were neither canonical nor in the grand scheme of things, that widespread. Let us therefore begin. First, Namee argues that “Orthodox Christians in America today are largely united.” The key word here is “largely.” Depending on where one lives, one can just as easily state that we are “largely divided.” For example in 2007 the GOA Metropolitan of Boston issued a ban on octavian augustus, his clergy preventing them from associating and concelebrating with members of the vs. Conventional Fuel, OCA a ban which is still in force.

4 Metropolitan Philip Saliba of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of America (AOA) jurisdiction for his part has banned his clergy from concelebrating with priests of the newly created Palestinian “vicariate” of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOA). 5 Recently, the general secretary of the Holy Synod in Istanbul, gave a scathing speech at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, in Genetic Engineering: Human Race Essay, which he castigated two of the Biofuel vs. Conventional, primates of other jurisdictions and even slandered the OCA as as “barely canonical.” 6 He then went on to lament the ledcs countries, state of Orthodoxy in America, parish life in general, and the Athonite monasteries recently implanted here, among other things. His The Secretary's most startling claim however was that the Ecumenical Patriarchate enjoyed universal jurisdiction and thus, North America should be subjugated to a metropolitan of its choosing. Though his speech was ill received at Holy Cross, the faculty of that school recently posted a statement on Fuel, the prerogatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its claims to extra-territorial domination based on an arguable reading of Canon 28 of octavian augustus, Chalcedon. 7 In other words, the faculty essentially agreed with the broad thrust of the original speech albeit in a more restrained and thoughtful manner. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel. Interestingly enough, this statement was unsigned. Other examples of disunity and noxious sentiments abound. In an issue of octavian augustus, The Orthodox Observer , Fr Mark Arey stated that the GOA was “the [only] canonical jurisdiction in America.” 8 Ironically, Arey is the general secretary of the Standing Council of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in America (SCOBA). Vs. Conventional Essay. Chicanery is ledcs countries also not beyond the pale: In order to increase the number of Constantinopolitan eparchies in North America, a special Albanian exarchate was created, consisting of two parishes. (The Albanian diocese of the OCA by contrast has 14 parishes.) For good measure, the Georgian Orthodox Church recently announced the creation of a metropolitan for its one, lone parish in Brooklyn. Recently, during an Biofuel, official visit in the United States, the octavian augustus, Ecumenical Patriarch distorted the origins of Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, Orthodoxy’s beginnings in North America when he completely ignored the entire Russian missionary experience. 9 Rather, he lauded the New Smyrna plantation as the fons et origo of Orthodoxy in North America, even though the vast majority of its population was not Orthodox Christian, its only priest was Roman Catholic, and no Orthodox mission resulted.

In any event the plantation withered away and its denizens merged into of revolution, the majority population, leaving no traces of Essay, Hellenism behind. All of the incidents of intra-Orthodox rivalry described above took place within the past few years. None of this would strike the casual observer that the Orthodox Church in America is “largely united.” Indeed, estrangement would be not too strong a word. As examples of inter-Orthodox cooperation, we are told by Genetic Race Namee “#133;that various Orthodox churches have banded together to form elementary schools, nursing homes, and soup kitchens.” A Google search for examples of such endeavors at present has not yielded any results as of yet. Although to my mind they would be welcome, the fact of their apparent scarcity should lead one to Fuel Essay adopt a more humble attitude regarding local pan-Orthodox cooperation especially in literary, the philanthropic field. Essay. To be sure, the IOCC and the OCMC do admirable and much-lauded work, principally in the international arena. However, these are examples of national ministries sponsored by SCOBA, not individual parishes located in the same city, working in cooperation with each other and pooling their parochial resources. Octavian. As for domestic charitable work, the recently created Fellowship of Biofuel, Orthodox Christians United to Serve (FOCUS) is receiving less than full support from ledcs countries SCOBA, most probably due to intra-jurisdictional rivalry. 10. Namee does not shy from taking high-ranking members of Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, his own (Antiochian) jurisdiction to task for propagating this supposed myth of unity. 11 That being said, the very hinge of this argument falls apart when he states, “#133;that from mephistopheles meaning its earliest days in America, Orthodoxy was characterized by Biofuel Essay ethnic separation.” Let us ignore briefly whether this is desirable or even canonical.

This argument in toto rests on this one phrase: “from its earliest days.” But what is meant by “earliest days”? Any objective assessment of the North American church would have to octavian begin from the actual inception of Orthodoxy in North America, that is from 1794. Unfortunately the Essay, first century of analysis, American Orthodoxy is elided over almost completely without comment. The Alaskan experience is resolutely ignored and/or marginalized. The martyrdom of the first native American martyr (Peter the Biofuel Fuel Essay, Aleut) in California no less(!) is not mentioned at all. The historic and massive outreach to the Carpatho-Russians, Galicians, and Ukrainians (the “Uniates”) is given remarkably short shrift. Ready?. Nor are the non-Russian immigrant parishes of various ethnicities that were founded or supported by the Russian Mission given much consideration. The founding of Russian immigrant parishes and diocesan institutions likewise passes with only minimal comment. In reading this author’s paper, one gets the decided impression that only independent Greek parishes were being founded in the United States. Unfortunately we are not told that the vs. Conventional, majority of these independent parishes were originally founded as ethnic social clubs, as stated by Aircraft Details and Operation Essay no less an authority than Metropolitan Isaiah Chronopoulos of Denver, 12 a bishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

Others such as the Greek community of Galveston, Texas were founded in schism from already established Russian Mission parishes (in this case, a Serbian parish). That most of the Biofuel, Greek parishes were formed due to examples of revolution brazen acts of schism and other canonical irregularities largely passes without comment. Biofuel. One could be forgiven for getting the impression that such unfortunate acts are canonically inconsequential. Instead, we are comforted by examples of revolution the fact that Holy Chrism was being received from both the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Mephistopheles Meaning. Left unsaid is whether such nonchalance oversights are is ecclesiologically normal or even if it is canonically valid. Unfortunately, Namee contradicts himself and equivocates on some important points. The author writes that “#133;unity can have a variety of meanings.” How to square his statement that “all Orthodox churches are united on doctrine and sacraments,” in vs. Conventional, light of another of his observations wherein we are told that “#133;discipline with regard to marriage, ordination, and ledcs countries, the reception of converts can and vs. Conventional, often does differ”? Moreover, it is a stretch to say that all jurisdictions hold to the same “moral teachings.” The GOA for example lauded two Orthodox Senators of Greek extraction who upheld President Clinton’s veto of the partial birth abortion ban passed by Congress a practice that is so ghastly that presently only two doctors in America perform it. Indeed, the Design Details and Operation, silence from many jurisdictions in this matter is nothing less than scandalous.

Likewise, the question of membership in Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, Freemasonry for Orthodox Christians is far from settled across the spectrum of American Orthodoxy. In certain Antiochian parishes in mephistopheles, the Upper Midwest, it was reliably reported that Muslim relatives of Orthodox Christians have regularly communed and have even served on parish councils. 13 No doubt there are other examples of variances in moral standards, all of which calls into Biofuel vs. Conventional, question the contention that “all jurisdictions” share the Aircraft Propeller Design Details, same “moral teachings.” As to Biofuel Fuel English being the “lingua franca” of Orthodox liturgies, a careful examination would indicate that such a statement is not necessarily borne out by the facts as presented. The study cited indicates that out of over 2,100 parishes in ledcs countries, the United States, only Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay 345 were sampled and of these, 74 percent stated that English was their “primary liturgical language.” From personal experience, I can safely state that regarding this issue alone, the range of responses within a single parish can vary dramatically. The reason is because for many it is meaning a volatile issue, one having to do with an individual parishioner’s self-identity as a member of an ethnic group which for many is the sine qua non of Orthodox identity. Therefore, even if the universe of vs. Conventional Fuel, responses were more in line with the actual number of churches, I would still be reticent about augustus, making categorical statements regarding which is the “primary” language that is in fact being used in most American Orthodox churches. III. The Creation Myth” Its Origins and the Facts. Where then did the Biofuel vs. Conventional, “creation myth” come from?

The author cites The Orthodox Church by of revolution Timothy Ware and Orthodox America, 1794-1976: Development of the Orthodox Church in America by Alexander Schmemann. As for the culprits who ruptured this unity (according to this narrative), he identifies the usual suspects, the Bolsheviks and Archbishop Meletius Metaxakis (later to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay be Patriarch Meletius IV of mephistopheles, Constantinople). The question unanswered is where did Ware and Schmemann acquire this narrative; one which can best be described as unity followed by rupture? After all, neither Ware nor Schmemann made it up out of whole cloth. Fuel Essay. A partial answer can be found in the author’s own biography, wherein he writes that he “grew up believing what [he now terms] the ‘myth of augustus, unity.’” In other words, it was a belief that was au courant in Orthodox circles throughout North America. (I can attest to this fact based on my own personal experience. 14 ) It was only by his own research that he came to the conclusion that this was never the case, a “fact” which caused him “no small measure of disappointment.” How then did we arrive at this point, to believe in Biofuel Fuel Essay, two diametrically opposed narratives? It is my contention that despite the best of Propeller Design Details and Operation, scholarly intentions, what is being proposed here is a counter-myth, perhaps unwittingly; but nonetheless one which has dire implications for the future of Orthodoxy in America. As noted, this newer narrative is based on a different interpretation of the Biofuel Essay, same facts and a regrettable ignorance of examples of revolution, others. One of the elements of this counter-myth is the present Constantinopolitan claims of proteia or primacy which by rights supposedly belong to the GOA alone, since it is the major eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in North America. Vs. Conventional. Although the author does not propagate this startling claim nor give it any credence in his own analysis, it does have its proponents and at present it is tightly interwoven with arguments of those who castigate the “creation myth” to justify their claims.

One of these critics is the aforementioned Arey, who boldly asserts that “the myth of a unified Orthodox Church in the Western Hemisphere prior to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 needs to be debunked by serious historical and factual research.” 15 To his credit, Namee is an honest scholar; his own meticulous research has led him to the conclusion which he now holds, independent of any preconceived notions. Arey on the other hand feels that the matter is settled because the “myth” of unity will be “debunked” once “serious and factual research” (as opposed to octavian “nonfactual” research?) is Fuel Essay conducted. In other words, Arey and examples of revolution, his partisans in the GOA have already decided on the result, now all that is needed is Biofuel Essay research to Details justify the official party line. One can reasonably surmise that the reason GOA functionaries have taken this argument is that it is Biofuel vs. Conventional only by doing so that the primatial claims of the OCA can be trumped. Weaknesses of the Counter-Myth. Leaving aside for the moment the novel claims of Constantinopolitan supremacy and the sloppy logic of its adherents, the assertion of administrative disunity has been taken up by examples other honest critics. As shall be seen time and again, it can only be sustained by completely ignoring the first century of the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, history of the Russian missionary diocese. Indeed, such willful ignorance is necessary for certain modern partisans of Constantinople otherwise their claims to jurisdiction over America can gain no purchase. It is only by going to literary examples the heart of the matter, that is to say the grant of autocephaly by Patriarch Alexei I to the Metropolia in 1970 16 and attempting to delegitimize it, that such grandiose claims over North America can even be sustained.

Although this is probably not Namee’s intent, his arguments unwittingly give aid and comfort to Biofuel vs. Conventional the present supremacist Constantinopolitan position. More to the point, such a tack legitimizes the present jurisdictional anarchy with the attendant ecclesiological chaos. Examples Of Revolution. Regardless, the vs. Conventional Fuel, counter-myth fails to make its case. Consider: it is literary analysis examples noted that both patriarchs Alexei I and his successor Pimen defended this action to Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople. Their words on this matter, that the authority of the Moscow patriarchate over North America was “recognized by all the Local Churches, including the Holy Church of Constantinople#133;” 17 is Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay left unchallenged. Athenegoras’ lame response that “the initial Russian presence in Alaska and on the west coast of the United States did not grant to the Russian Church jurisdiction over all of America” 18 likewise passes without comment. Two things are immediately obvious from the ledcs countries, above statement: (1) Athenagoras recognized the precedence of the Russian Mission on American soil but tried to minimize it by limiting it to the “west coast” (which of course is not entirely true), and Biofuel, (2) Athenagoras made no countervailing argument against Alexei’s assertion that the Russian claim in North America was recognized by “all the Local Churches, including#133;Constantinople.” (What exactly was Athenagoras’ point? That Russia had jurisdiction over the Pacific Rim?) Interestingly enough, Athenagoras made no mention of Canon 28, which supposedly grants only Constantinople the right to octavian augustus evangelize and establish churches outside the boundaries of already established local churches. At the risk of digression, it is in fact becoming increasingly clear that the present claims of the Phanar regarding these issues have been evolving. Indeed, this new claim that is to say, Constantinopolitan supremacy based on a novel interpretation of Essay, Canon 28 that no canonical or historical precedent.

In fact, it is only be viewing history a posteriori and with an agenda already in place that it can even be propounded in the first place. Literary Analysis. 19. It is noteworthy that both Alexei and Pimen held the vs. Conventional Essay, same position regarding the American church. A case could certainly be made that their defense was self-serving. On the other hand, an even stronger case could be made that both men believed that an autocephalous mother church has the right to grant autonomy and mephistopheles, even autocephaly to its own dioceses should the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, political situation warrant it this was in fact how ROCOR came about (after a fashion). 20. Be that as it may, this was also the position of the primitive Church, which saw the proliferation of new dioceses and Aircraft and Operation, autocephalous provinces (as is implied in Apostolic Canon 34) in the first five hundred years of the Christian Era. What for that matter gives Athenagoras’ counter-argument any more weight? That is to say that Russia’s warrant extended only to San Francisco (if that)? Can it not also be said that his own position in this regard was self-serving? And since we are traveling down this path, which canon gives only Constantinople the right to Biofuel Fuel grant autocephaly to churches that are not in its patriarchate?

More to the point and apropos of the present argument propagated by some professors at Holy Cross, which canon gives only literary examples Constantinople the Biofuel vs. Conventional, right to preach and evangelize a territory outside the borders of mephistopheles, already established local churches, that is, universal jurisdiction? A position that is in fact in direct violation of the Council of Carthage (A.D. 410)? 21. To buttress the vs. Conventional Fuel, case that the canonical anarchy that existed from ledcs countries 1908 on was of vs. Conventional Fuel, no consequence, the author Namee marshals a critic from within the GOA, Fr Thomas FitzGerald (currently dean of Holy Cross). Even with FitzGerald, it becomes clear that the ledcs countries, case against the so-called creation myth is vs. Conventional Essay not as strong as we are led to believe. For example, FitzGerald, states that the octavian augustus, “vast majority of Greek parishes were organized without any contact with the Russian bishops in America.” 22 This is true. It is also a selective quotation, one wrenched out of a far less sympathetic context. Even its plain words cannot be used as an argument against Fuel Essay, the primacy of the augustus, Russian Mission since FitzGerald accepts the reality of “Russian bishops in America,” and implicitly accepts the fact that at least some Greek parishes (as opposed to the “vast majority”) adhered to the proper protocols and were under its pastoral care. More importantly, FitzGerald is not blind to what this independence meant for the proper canonical order then (or at the present for that matter), a situation which he labels as nothing less than a “serious anomaly.” According to FitzGerald: #133;the establishment of “ethnic” and even “political” dioceses rather than territorial dioceses may have served the short-term needs of the immigrants.

However, the ecclesiastical requirements for canonical order, integrity, and the unity of the episcopacy in a give region were sacrificed. This led to an undue emphasis upon a policy of “congregationalism” which is alien to Essay Orthodoxy, and to an attitude of phyletism, both which have greatly diminished the Genetic Engineering: Is the Essay, mission and salutary message of the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Orthodox Church in the United States until very recently. 23. The Emergence of Genetic Engineering: Is the Human Race, Multiple Jurisdictions. To ask the question of whether this hyper-independence was Orthodox is to answer it: Is anarchy and schism, (its inevitable consequence) ever canonical?

This is Fuel Essay precisely the problem. Certainly FitzGerald is not oblivious to the loss of “canonical order.” As he himself states, not only literary analysis did congregationalism undermine the correct spiritual relationship between the people and their pastors, it distorted the very nature of the episcopate itself. Indeed, almost all of the ecclesial models such as are presently employed in North America are nothing less than phyletistic, that is to say that they are ipso facto heretical. Even the OCA’s present model of ethnic dioceses which are parallel with its territorial on falls short of the canonical norm. This is the logical conclusion of FitzGerald’s analysis (even if he does not make it himself). A very uncomfortable question derives from this, one which FitzGerald does not raise but which nevertheless logically follows: are the mysteries of the multiple, ethnic jurisdictions which he rightly labels “a serious anomaly” valid? Are the present multiple ethnic jurisdictions in virtual schism from Biofuel Fuel Essay each other?

If not, are we in fact looking instead at the inception of a new schism based on varying degrees of examples, orthopraxy, which is the inevitable result of our present ghetto mentality? If unity did in fact exist at one time, one could easily make this case. Even if a grand, overarching unity never in fact existed, do not the parallel, later jurisdictions many of which were created from a smattering of ethnic parishes that arose because of schism from the vs. Conventional Essay, Russian Mission bear the taint of canonical irregularity? Otherwise, why would their partisans resolutely dismiss or otherwise ignore the first century of American Orthodoxy? As noted, even the present Ecumenical Patriarch went out of his way to present a distorted and highly misleading case regarding the origins of Orthodoxy on the North American continent. Mephistopheles. Therefore the Biofuel vs. Conventional, fundamental question is: Why should this be the literary, case? It appears that the burden of proof is upon those who are antithetical to the primacy of the Biofuel vs. Conventional, Russian Mission otherwise the reliance upon such a massive historical lacunae would not be necessary. The presence of multiple, redundant, and parallel jurisdictions in North America is octavian augustus not without its canonical and liturgical conundrums. Biofuel Fuel Essay. As mentioned, there is hardly a consensus regarding a wide spectrum of ledcs countries, moral concerns.

Liturgical divergences are real as well. That being said, is it possible that Orthodoxy in America is in the process of undergoing a modern replay of the ancient Donatist heresy, in which those who consider themselves to be “more” Orthodox will have very little to do with those whom they deem “less” Orthodox? If this scenario plays out, which body of American Orthodox will be the Donatists and which the Orthodox-Catholics? Will there be a new St Augustine who will forge a rationale for vs. Conventional Fuel rapprochement between these two estranged ecclesial bodies? Even if it never comes to this, if we continue this path, it is obvious that disunity and disharmony will continue to mephistopheles be the norm. FitzGerald was being charitable when he wrote these words in 1984.

In the interim, the divergences liturgical and otherwise between jurisdictions have only Biofuel Fuel Essay intensified. Contrary to examples the optimism of some, it is just as likely that a break in Biofuel vs. Conventional, communion can occur if the present disunity is not resolved. If not inevitable, it is at least foreseeable. Ignorance of ledcs countries, canonical authority cannot negate the Fuel Essay, reality of the literary analysis, same, in much the same way that “ignorance of the law is vs. Conventional Fuel no excuse” (as stated by examples the famous legal adage). It is curious indeed why critics of the “creation myth” feel that they have to justify deplorable behavior in order to Fuel break free from the “myth” of the primacy of the Russian Mission. Regardless of the fact that unity from 1892 on was increasingly ignored by the newer immigrants, FitzGerald’s words cannot be dragooned into the service of ledcs countries, those who wish to justify this anarchy as a trivial matter. Nor for that matter can they be used by modern partisans who wish to subjugate the current multiple jurisdictions of North America under yet another foreign church. Indeed, quite the opposite. Vs. Conventional. His own words on this matter are quite explicit: he writes that “Orthodoxy in Aircraft Propeller Design Details and Operation, the United States can only be viewed properly as an emerging local Church comprised mainly of American citizens of a wide variety of racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.” FitzGerald goes on Fuel Essay, to state:

In due course, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the various Orthodox jurisdictions#133;will be united into an autocephalous Church which will be officially recognized as such by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the other autocephalous Orthodox Churches. 24. The present essay is not concerned with the present hyperbolic claims made by examples of revolution the modern devotees of Canon 28. To be fair, neither is Namee. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay. (Indeed, the present protocols of the examples, Chambesy conference of June and December of Biofuel, 2009 have laid to rest all references to Canon 28, which was not even referenced in any of the proceedings. 25 ) Regardless, it is equally clear that the counter-myth proposed by Aircraft Propeller Namee and others makes it easier to propagate this newer position. After all, many Old World patriarchates continue to view the Orthodox of America as a part of a dispersion, one sustained by blood ties to the Old World and Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, not because of any concerted evangelistic effort. FitzGerald’s position is in ledcs countries, fact the exact opposite. Vs. Conventional Fuel. To believe otherwise, one would have to take this argument to the next logical step, that is that the anarchy that obtained from 1908 in certain independent parishes was normative and of no charismatic consequence.

Leaving aside the problem of sacramental validity, such nonchalance would necessarily mean that there is in fact no Orthodox position regarding parish or diocesan formation; that all comers are welcome and all parishes and dioceses founded under such schemes are canonical. This is an literary, absurd argument on its face and Orthodox in America were alerted to this fear by Chronopoulos, who wrote that because of our administrative disunity, there is no legal way to stop the proliferation of jurisdictions which call themselves “Orthodox.” 26. Two Early Parishes: Holy Trinity, New Orleans 1864 Holy Trinity, New York 1892. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church - 1866. In 1890, Namee states that only two Orthodox churches existed in the “continental United States.” He describes them as “a Russian cathedral in San Francisco and a Holy Trinity parish in New Orleans.” Curiously, the ethnic origin of this latter church is not mentioned. There are perhaps several reasons for this, including the fact that although it was founded in vs. Conventional Essay, 1864, its ethnic identity was only first described in the US Census of Genetic Human Race Essay, 1890, wherein we are told that it was “a part of the Church of Greece, in connection with the consulate of Greece in New Orleans.” Notice that this description first surfaces twenty-two years after the fact . Its “jurisdiction” therefore is not a settled matter. To his credit, Namee points out Biofuel vs. Conventional, that according to some contemporaneous sources, it (Holy Trinity) was believed by some to be “under the authority of the Church of Russia.” 27 Its conception, in other words, was less than immaculate.

In fact, its origins are murkier than what is stated in the official pronouncements of the Greek jurisdiction. Its first priest was a man named Agapius Honcharenko, whom we are told was “an itinerant Ukrainian of questionable credentials who was visiting New York City in 1865 when he was contacted by the New Orleans parish.” According to Honcharenko himself, he “had a price on Design and Operation Essay, his head for his involvement in revolutionary activities.” In previous responses to another critic, 28 I made much of the fact that some of the priests who came to America independently of the Russian Mission were under an ethical or “canonical cloud.” I stand by this statement. Biofuel Fuel. Let us distill this argument to its essence: the concept of an independently founded parish which was congregational in polity, by necessity gave rise to ledcs countries the scandalous concept of the hireling priest. Neither phenomenon is canonical. I leave it up to the reader to decide about the validity of sacraments performed under such conditions. In his presentation at St Vladimir’s, emphasis was made on Honcharenko’s estrangement from the Russian Orthodox Church, ostensibly to further neutralize the myth of vs. Conventional Essay, unity. In doing so however, it is the of revolution, parish’s canonicity which is vs. Conventional Essay called into question, not the validity of the Russian Mission . Again, nigh-heroic efforts must be made to literary ignore the elephant in Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, the room, thereby unwittingly strengthening the contrary argument. Therefore incidents such as the chaotic founding of the mephistopheles, New Orleans parish cannot be a point of Essay, pride (nor should they) and in fact, such parish formations militate against the claims of modern-day critics of the Russian missionary diocese and other propagandists of the multiple jurisdictional model. This fact requires further reflection; in fact, it boggles the mind.

Why did this supposedly “Greek” parish reach out to a Ukrainian of Propeller Details, such disrepute to be its first priest (if indeed he was a priest)? If this was a Greek parish which was “part of the Church of Greece,” and one “in connection with the Greek consulate” (as stated years later in the 1890 Census) then why didn’t it look to Greece for its first priest? Is it possible that Mark Stokoe’s assessment (that it was a pan-Orthodox parish made up immigrants from many different Orthodox groups) is the more accurate one? 29 Even if the matter of Holy Trinity’s ethnic origins cannot be settled once and for all, we do know that all other parishes established between 1868 and 1892 admittedly a small number were most definitely under the Russian Mission, regardless of ethnic origin. Namee then goes to some lengths to minimize the impact of the Alaskan experience. Biofuel Essay. He indicates that it did not become a territory until 1912, overlooking the fact that its sovereignty was transferred to the United States when it was purchased in Design Details, 1867 from the czarist government. As for the geographical separation of Alaska from the vs. Conventional Fuel, continental United States, he looks to ledcs countries Fr Michael Oleksa, an authority on Biofuel Essay, Alaskan Orthodoxy for support. He records that according to Oleksa “#133;by 1917, the vast majority of American Orthodox immigrants#133;were ‘totally unaware of the history of the Alaskan Church.’” 30 This is not completely accurate as we shall soon point out. Octavian. Regardless, this assertion is superfluous as the vast majority of Biofuel Essay, canonists, theologians, priests, and bishops were at least aware of the antiquity of the Russian Mission as stated by patriarchs Alexei, Pimen and (reluctantly) Athenagoras. More importantly, during this time of peak immigration (1890-1920), many, if not most, Orthodox Christians in America before this time knew this as well. Indeed, the argument of Alaska’s geographic distance is octavian a nullity since up until 1996, all jurisdictions in North America were transnational in Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, that they include Canada and Mexico as well.

31 As to its unique culture, that is neither here nor there: The culture of the Engineering: Is the Ready?, Carpatho-Russians of the Monongahela Valley, the Serbs of the Mountain West, the Ukrainians of vs. Conventional Fuel, Manitoba, and the Greeks of Tarpon Springs are equally unique and “worthy of study.” Be that as it may, Louisiana was in secession from the United States and octavian, it was under federal occupation and martial law. Indeed, this church (Holy Trinity) had been founded in Essay, the Confederate States of America, a polity which was viewed sympathetically by most of the great European powers (Russia excepted) and whose incipient nationhood would have been recognized had the Army of Northern Virginia prevailed at Gettysburg. Therefore Athenagoras’ attempt to disqualify the examples, legitimacy of the Russian Mission’s claim to being the local church of the United States because it was located in San Francisco falls under the weight of its own logic. It is in fact, historically untenable.

California at least was a legitimate territory, thereby placing it within the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, normative life of the United States whereas Louisiana had forfeited this right because of its secession from the Union. Its citizens in ledcs countries, fact were disenfranchised in vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, the immediate aftermath of the War Between the octavian, States. Indeed, it was an Biofuel, open question at the time as to whether some (or all) of the Southern states would have been welcomed back into the Union. 32. Perhaps realizing that the ledcs countries, questionable origin of the New Orleans parish does not help the cause of Greek independence from the Biofuel Fuel, Russian Mission, Namee then jumps ahead thirty years to the creation of Holy Trinity in New York City in 1892. This church, which was the product of a secular Greek lodge called the Society of Athena, approached the Church of Greece for mephistopheles its first priest. The matter was remanded to the Ecumenical Patriarchate who then referred the issue back to the Church of Greece. Coincidentally, this is not unlike the scenario which occurred eighty years later, when the Essay, Metropolia went to Aircraft Details and Operation Istanbul to plead their case, only to be told to turn to their mother church in vs. Conventional Essay, Russia (which then granted them autocephaly). Within a few years, a schism in this Church of Greece parish erupted resulting in the establishment of Design Details, another parish in Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, New York (Annunciation) which was set up under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Ledcs Countries. This of course brings up another uncomfortable question: Since the closing of the Russian chapel in New York, the fact that the first parish in New York was “founded” by the Church of Greece would indicate that territorial rights belonged to that church, not the Ecumenical Patriarchate. (Of course, the Church of Biofuel Fuel, Greece did no such thing, it was founded by its congregants who then turned to octavian Greece for a priest.) Be that as it may, an argument could be made that Constantinople was encroaching upon the jurisdiction of that church.

This is curious in that it was understood that the Church of Greece was constrained by its own grant of autocephaly from Biofuel evangelizing outside its borders. This grant had been given to Greece by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1850, when it ended the octavian augustus, schism that had erupted between the two churches some twenty years earlier when the Church of Greece unilaterally declared autocephaly from the Turkish-controlled Ecumenical Patriarchate. Regardless, this calls into Biofuel vs. Conventional, question not only the details of the counter-myth, but the present hyperbolic claims of literary analysis examples, Constantinopolitan primacy whose partisans claim that no autocephalous church can exercise missionary efforts outside of their own nations’ boundaries. The very fact that the Ecumenical Patriarchate remanded the issue of pastoral care for this parish to the Church of Greece shows this type of canonical stricture was not in evidence or more probably that it was a dead letter. At any rate, it shows in a glaringly patent manner that neither church had any real or effective concern for North America. At the risk of belaboring the Fuel, point, no claims of primacy over the North American continent were leveled at this time or of universal jurisdiction for that matter. Propeller Details. Not only were these parishes on their own, but their lack of interaction with each other proves that all claims of primacy and jurisdiction were subsequent to the fact. In other words, the reality on the ground was one of vs. Conventional Fuel, pastoral and evangelistic apathy, to a degree that is Genetic Engineering: Is the Race Essay unfathomable to normative ecclesiastical practice. If this does not dispel any notions of Biofuel Essay, universal jurisdiction and/or Byzantine primacy over North America, then nothing does. Since it appears that the Church of meaning, Greece chose not to contest the founding of Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, this schismatic parish, and there was no guidance in this matter from either the Church of Greece or the Ecumenical Patriarchate, then the concept of parish foundation and analysis examples, jurisdiction at Biofuel Fuel Essay this time was fluid, one could even say anarchic.

At least this was the case with those ethnic parishes founded independently of the Russian missionary diocese. The contrast with parish formation as found within the Russian Mission is stark (to say the least). Every parish set up under the pastoral care of the Russian bishops, and all evangelistic activities under its aegis, were undertaken with the greatest attention to detail. At any rate, the picture painted above by anti-Russian Mission partisans of parishes outside its purview is not a pretty one. For example, in order to neutralize the primatial claims of the Russian Mission, many critics like to point out that in literary analysis, some cities, Greek parishes preceded the foundation of Russian parishes.

To be sure, it is Fuel noted that in New York City, a Russian chapel which had been founded in 1870, was closed by the Russian government in 1883. If however, the Orthodox ecclesiological principle as envisioned by this newer narrative is one of independence, or to be more accurate, complete indifference to the established ecclesial presence, then what of this fact? What difference would it have made had there been ten Russian Mission parishes in New York City? Or a hundred for of revolution that matter? After all, it does not appear that these newer Greek parishes were concerned at all about the Biofuel Fuel, established Russian hierarchy in the New World. Nor were they concerned with each other for that matter. The Counter-Myth: Selective Comparisons.

It is here that anti-Russian Mission partisans seem to have staked some we see some very tenuous claims, that is, that numbers alone can overwhelm an established local church and that indifference to the territorial principle is of no consequence. Literary Analysis. This argument however is a double-edged sword. Were there not already scores of parishes in Alaska? Were there not dozens of formerly Uniate parishes in the lower 48 by vs. Conventional Essay this time? For that matter, were there not Russian Mission parishes being formed due to mephistopheles the immigration of Russians, Ukrainians, Galicians, and Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, Byelorussians into North America during this very same time? Clearly what we see at this time is a formal, recognized diocese operating under canonical norms and undertaking a serious evangelistic program. Why then do critics insist on overlooking this substantial effort with its scores of parishes in favor of the much smaller number of literary examples, independent parishes which were being founded in a piecemeal, chaotic fashion and under no canonical supervision whatsoever? At any rate, it is not unknown for dioceses to close down missions and churches.

This does not mean that the diocese is extinct or that it can be taken over by another autocephalous Orthodox church. By selectively comparing three Russian parishes in the lower 48 (and ignoring the large numbers of Alaskan and Uniate parishes) to an equally small number of independent Greek parishes, a highly skewed picture of American Orthodoxy in the period from 1890-1910 is presented. Perhaps this is why some critics of the Russian Mission go to such great lengths to vs. Conventional Essay ignore the reality of the Uniate outreach of St Alexis Toth as well as the ledcs countries, ecclesiological experience of Alaska is Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay ignored. When viewed in the correct light, “administrative unity” for the growing number of parishes of the Russian diocese appears far closer to the reality than not. More to ledcs countries the point, how was the Russian Mission administered? Were canonical norms in place, especially in regards to the treatment of priests? Specifically, were the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, priests of the Russian Mission treated as they were in the few Greek parishes that existed before 1910, that is to say, as employees who were hired and fired based on nothing more than the caprices of congregationally run parish councils (as noted by even critics of the so-called creation myth). To further make the meaning, case for administrative disunity, Namee describes the situation in Chicago in which a Russian and Greek parish existed side-by-side, with supposedly little interaction.

This lack of interaction however did not cover that particular Greek parish in glory as we can tell from contemporaneous accounts, a fact which must have been obvious to casual observers since it generated some notoriety. According to The Chicago Tribune for example, we learn that “One is the Orthodox or regular Russian Church#133;while the Biofuel, other is purely Greek in its membership and nationality. 33 ” According to this same source, “The Greek church ‘wants no one but those of Hellenic blood among its members.’” Again, in ledcs countries, my previous responses 34 to a certain critic, I made much of the fact that the idea that these independent priests viewed themselves as “missionaries,” was a very charitable view given the actual facts on the ground. Vs. Conventional Fuel. Exaggerated would not be too strong a word in this regard. I stand by octavian augustus that claim. Certainly the congregations that hired them did not view them as “missionaries.” Interestingly enough, the “independence” of the Greeks from the Essay, Russian diocese appears to not be so cut-and-dried.

Namee cites two incidents of co-worship between Greeks and Aircraft Propeller Design, Russians. The first occurred on Oct 7, 1894, wherein we are told that both Greeks and Russians in Chicago worshiped together at the Russian church to “commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Orthodoxy in the New World.” 35 Regrettably, this startling fact passes without comment. At the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, very least, this is clear evidence of the fact that there was clear agreement about the antiquity of the Russian Mission and its primacy in North America. This in fact calls into Aircraft Details and Operation, question veracity of Fuel, Oleksa’s comment that “the vast majority” of Orthodox immigrants were “totally unaware” of the meaning, Alaskan church. Clearly, these Greek-Americans were aware. Indeed, this act of vs. Conventional, commemorative worship is evidence that knowledge of Alaska was not as unknown as we have been led to examples believe. And this was not a singular incident. Later that same year for Biofuel Essay example, memorial services were held for Tsar Alexander III in all three Greek churches in the U.S., Yet further evidence that there was recognition of the precedence of the mephistopheles meaning, Russian Mission and perhaps some degree of dependence upon the czarist government.

This is an important point: Why would these mostly republican Greek immigrants commemorate the late Tsar, who was an absolutist monarch? The answer may lie in the fact that many of them were thankful for the resources that the Fuel Essay, Russian Mission extended to them. We can therefore say that in some Greek circles, it appears that they did view themselves as being part of the local Orthodox authority, at least in some general sense. As to ledcs countries the fact of Greek “independence” being due to lack of Biofuel Fuel, proper canonical and episcopal oversight, this is no matter for pride. Nor was it as unyielding as the critics would have us believe: We learn for Design Details example that in the time period in question, that is before the final rupture (1916-1918), six “independent” Greek parishes received antimins from the Russian Mission, thereby placing themselves formally under its jurisdiction. In other words, 7 percent of vs. Conventional Fuel, Greek-American parishes placed themselves under the protection of the Russian hierarchy a good eight years after they were supposedly “transferred” to the Church of Greece by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Interestingly enough, this is the exact same time period in which we are told by Oleksa that the “vast majority” of Orthodox immigrants were “totally unaware of the ledcs countries, history of the Alaskan Church.” Perhaps they were ignorant of the Alaskan church, but were they “totally unaware” of the Russian-American diocese? Increasingly, it looks like they were not, otherwise, why would they reach out to the Russian bishops for their antiminsions? Independent Parishes Under a “Canonical Cloud” Barbara MacGahan - 1893 (Photo SOCHA) My entire contention about independent parishes being under a canonical cloud increases in strength given the more facts we uncover. One would do better to Biofuel Essay avert one’s eyes from this fact and what it portends for the ecclesiology of the subsequent ethnic jurisdictions. As Namee himself notes, things were so bad that one contemporaneous Greek bishop describes the octavian, situation in the Greek parishes as “complete chaos.” He also quotes Fr John Erickson, who writes that these same Greek parishes were “independent of any authority beyond the local community.” 36 In other words they were congregational, which is to say, not canonical.

Leaving aside for Fuel the moment the shocking ramifications such a state of affairs implies as to the matter of Genetic Is the Human Race, ecclesial legitimacy, the congregational principle was so pronounced that almost no priest escaped its wrath, surely a novelty in the vast sweep of Orthodox ecclesial history. How chaotic was this situation? According to a contemporaneous letter written to The Washington Post , one Mrs Barbara MacGahan goes to great lengths to distance the canonical Orthodox praxis as found in the churches of the Biofuel Fuel Essay, Russian Mission from the antics found in some of these independent parishes. 37 MacGahan (who, despite her name, was a prominent Russian-American) pleaded with her readers to Genetic Engineering: Is the Human not hold the Russians responsible since they were “under the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, steady guidance of Bishop Tikhon,” whereas the Greek parishes were “without any ecclesiastical guidance of supervision.” One shudders to think what was taking place in these parishes that it came to the unsympathetic attention of the mephistopheles, general public. The origin of the vs. Conventional, incipient Greek exarchate requires more study. We are told that the Church of Greece had “established” the of revolution, first Greek parish in New York City, and that soon after several other parishes were founded by that same church. In reality of course, the Church of Greece did no such thing; instead these parishes were established, founded, and funded by the Greek immigrants usually under the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, auspices of quasi-Masonic lodges and the Church of Greece merely accepted them as a fait accompli . Quite simply, the Greek church was in no position to endow or otherwise support new parishes outside its borders. At any rate, in 1908 the Ecumenical Patriarchate was forced by the Turkish government to relinquish control of them to the Church of Greece. Ledcs Countries. (This unsettling fact likewise passes without comment.) The Russian Orthodox Church at this point declared that all Greek parishes were under its purview. Constantinople disagreed and stuck to its original diktat, thus officially creating an Biofuel Fuel, extracanonical ethnic jurisdiction in North America as one contemporary critic stated at the time.

Critics of the “creation myth” however try to mitigate the severity of this transfer by octavian augustus stating that both the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Church of Greece were already “sending priests to America, resolving parish disputes, consecrating Holy Chrism for use in Essay, the New World, and even in the case of ledcs countries, Fr Raphael Morgan commissioning missionaries to evangelize Americans.” 38 Left unsaid is whether either church had the right to do so. As for “commissioning missionaries,” the vs. Conventional Fuel, seriousness of Morgan’s mission is an open question, one not easily resolved by simple assertions. 39. What is also left unexamined is that this tomos of Genetic Engineering: Human Race, transfer was not universally accepted even by the Greek-Americans. In other words, many continued to view themselves as part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate instead of the Church of Greece; again, a rather startling set of circumstances which the critics choose to ignore. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay. At this point, let me raise the Aircraft Details and Operation Essay, uncomfortable question: If the vs. Conventional Essay, Greek parishes chose to mephistopheles ignore this edict (from their mother church no less), it follows that they were refusing to vs. Conventional Essay accept the authority of the Ecumenical Patriarchate as well, thereby cutting themselves off from communion with this church. Under such circumstances, how could one make the case that their mysteries were valid or that the erstwhile pan-Hellenic jurisdiction was canonical? Leaving aside these uncomfortable facts, it is ledcs countries obvious that the tomos of transfer itself was invalid.

To be sure, these parishes’ indifference to the tomos may have been due to vs. Conventional Essay their congregationalism, nevertheless the plain fact remains that it was issued, even if under duress. No edict or canon that is enacted under such conditions can be considered valid otherwise, the Aircraft Propeller Design Details and Operation, council of Ferrara-Florence (1449) which ostensibly healed the schism between Greek East and Latin West is still in effect. This act was forced upon every Byzantine bishop by the emperor who wished to see a political alliance with the West. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay. As is augustus known, every Orthodox bishop present (except for Mark Eugenicus, the metropolitan of Ephesus) was forced to sign it. The noxiousness of this act was readily apparent to all and it became an Biofuel Fuel Essay, instant nullity among the people. Partisans of new anti-Russian Mission creation myth therefore can find no consolation in the tomos of octavian, 1908 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate nor for that matter can the present-day universal jurisdictionalists.

At best, the most that both anti-Russian Mission parties can say is that ethnic particularism and Biofuel Essay, ecclesial anarchy is of no concern when studying the origins of the multiple jurisdictions. Indeed, the Is the Human Essay, casual reader could be forgiven for getting the distinct impression that the parade of horribles that the critics describe is in fact a point of Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, pride, at least to the degree which these egregious incidents can be used to dismantle the idea of early American Orthodox unity. This of course brings us to a problem that is vexing inter-Orthodox relations throughout the examples, world: by what right does any autocephalous church have the ability to transfer parishes from one jurisdiction to another in Biofuel Fuel, a land in which there is an already established local church? Interestingly enough, Constantinople did not make any recourse to Engineering: Is the Human Essay universal jurisdiction to do so in 1908. At any rate, it was forced to undertake this action by vs. Conventional Fuel its Turkish overlords (as noted earlier). More importantly, it claims jurisdiction over the parishes of the Russian Mission, which by rights it could do so according to the present universalist claims as propagated by advocates of Canon 28. Therefore it could be said that North America at that time was basically a blank slate in which any patriarchate could claim jurisdiction for its particular ethnic group. Constantinople certainly did not protest the ledcs countries, founding of any of the other ethnic jurisdictions even after the formal establishment of the Biofuel Essay, Greek archdiocese in 1922, if any additional evidence was needed. Analysis Examples. Yet more food for thought for those who are suddenly emboldened by novel and quasi-papalist claims of universal jurisdiction based Canon 28.

As to Fuel Essay the attitude of Patriarch Joachim III of Constantinople (who is credited by Stokoe with accepting the primacy of the Genetic Engineering: Race Essay, Russian Mission), 40 Namee and others go to great lengths to suggest that he did no such thing. Unfortunately, according to the primary source Fr Michael Andreades Joachim did exactly that, when he refused to send a Greek bishop to North America at the request of Biofuel Fuel, St Tikhon. Examples. He suggested that a Greek bishop who had had been educated in a Russian Orthodox seminary, and Essay, who was attached to the Holy Synod of Russia, be sent to America instead. Octavian Augustus. For reasons known only to Biofuel vs. Conventional Joachim himself, he felt that only such a man would make a more ideal choice for examples such a position. Namee’s response that there was more to Joachim’s refusal based on the fact that he continued to Fuel send individual priests does not obviate against ledcs countries, Andreades’ original observation. In fact, this was precisely the same attitude taken by Biofuel the Serbian Orthodox Church when it refused to send a Serbian bishop, also at Tikhon’s request. Paradoxically, Belgrade as well kept sending priests (at least this appears to be the Engineering: Race Ready?, case).

This refusal to send ethnic bishops begs further reflection: Is it possible that Tikhon’s putative ethnic diocesan model was so novel that it could not be squared with traditional Orthodox ecclesiology? Perhaps that is why Joachim insisted that any Greek bishop should be one that was already part of the Fuel, Russian Orthodox Church; that it was only meaning under those parameters that the territorial principle could be maintained. Indeed, a reasonable case could be made that Tikhon’s vision of ethnic suffragans was a direct violation of the findings of the vs. Conventional Fuel, council of Constantinople of ledcs countries, 1872 which specifically condemned the creation of ethnic auxiliary dioceses. 41 It is just as likely as well that Constantinople and Essay, Belgrade both viewed the Russian Mission as it has traditionally been viewed, that is to literary say as an active diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to Andreades, Joachim did not reject the idea of a Greek bishop in principle, but only stipulated that he was to be part of the Russian church itself. Fuel. This proves to a substantial degree that the octavian, “creation myth” is vs. Conventional much more real than modern critics would have us believe and that the Genetic Is the Human Race Essay, norms of “administrative unity” were upheld, at least in the ideal. VI. Fuel Essay. More on the Missionary Phronema of the Russian-American Diocese.

Bishop Tikhon visiting his flock. By delving further into the historical record, critics of the so-called creation myth weaken their own case when they assert that Orthodoxy from its “earliest days” was characterized by disunity. This case can certainly be made from the time of the Design Essay, Bolshevik Revolution onwards. Fuel. To be sure, “cracks and fissures” in the Russian Mission were apparent from 1890-1910. 1908 of course was a watershed year in Genetic Essay, this ongoing rupture, at least in theory if not in actual fact. Essay. Yet even if we consider the massive waves of Aircraft Details and Operation, immigration that overwhelmed the Russian Mission, the majority of Orthodox parishes in North America were under the administrative control of the Russian bishops. This includes all Arab and Serbian parishes as well. In addition to its oversight of all of the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Serbian and Arab parishes, the augustus, Russian Mission made heroic efforts to pastor and found Greek parishes. Patriarch Joachim III himself lauded the Biofuel vs. Conventional, efforts of the Russian Mission for its “zealous missionary work among the examples of revolution, Greek people.” 42 Namee writes that there were three Greek priests (out of a total of 103) that were “known to have acknowledged the authority of the Russian hierarchy.” 43 Admittedly, this is a small fraction, yet this fact likewise begs an important question: Why did they do so? Conversely, we could ask: Why did none of the Russian Mission priests recognize the vs. Conventional Fuel, sovereignty of the Ecumenical Patriarchate? Especially in light of the present universalist claims made by the Phanar, which we are now led to believe was the mephistopheles meaning, norm for evangelism and church formation since at least the vs. Conventional, fifth century?

As to the governance of the various ethnic groups under the auspices of the Russian-American diocese, much can be said, both positive and negative. All of which indicates that the Russian hierarchy viewed itself as the octavian, authentic local church. Did “estrangement” and Fuel, “resentment” settle in, especially among the mephistopheles meaning, Serbs? Yes. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Essay. Did the Syro-Lebanese recognize the octavian augustus, sovereignty of the Russian hierarchy without misgivings?

No. Yet in both instances as well as in the case of some Greek parishes the reality of the primatial claims of the Russian-American diocese was accepted. Bishop Raphael Hawaweeny (last photo ever taken) As is well known by now, St Tikhon actively recruited a Syrian priest (Raphael Hawaweeny) whom he consecrated as a suffragan in the Russian Mission for the specific purpose of vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, creating a Syro-Lebanese diocese. He also looked to examples the formation of a Serbian diocese and had groomed a Serbian-American (Sebastian Dabovich) to be his protege in this regard. Both priests interestingly enough were already employed by the Russian missionary diocese and preceded Tikhon’s arrival in vs. Conventional Fuel, America by several years. (Dabovich incidentally was an American native.) It also appears that he looked to the creation of ledcs countries, a Greek diocese as well.

He even had diocesan seats planned for this multi-ethnic Russian-American exarchate: the primate would be archbishop of New York City; the Arab bishop would be situated in Brooklyn, and Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, the Serbian in Chicago. (It is believed that the Greek bishop would serve in of revolution, San Francisco.) All this indicates the reality of the primacy and permanence of the Russian Mission in North America. Biofuel. As for the Serbian parishes, they did engage in schism from the Russian Mission for a brief period, hence a case for disunity can be advanced. However they were brought back into the fold, therefore the original assertion remains: Unity was restored. The “fold” to which they returned was by definition the primatial one. As to the “relative independence” of Bishop Raphael Hawaweeny of Genetic Engineering: Race Ready? Essay, Brooklyn, I have indicated in two previous responses that the reality was more complicated. 44 At base, it could not be said that he had no loyalty to the church that consecrated him. Yes, he was of two minds as to his role within the Russian Mission. Certainly he was intensely proud of his Arab ethnicity. He was loyal after a fashion to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay the see of Antioch and consistently apprised Damascus of his actions. Yet none of the critics can bring forth evidence that the see of Antioch provided him with material support and literary analysis, the resources necessary to undertake his pastoral journeys throughout North America, much less set up a fully independent exarchate.

Nor is any evidence brought forth that he did not view himself as a suffragan of the Russian Orthodox Church. Admittedly, the situation in North America was novel, never in the history of Orthodoxy had so many different Orthodox migrations settled onto one continent in so short a time. St Tikhon was painfully aware of this and his own compromises in vs. Conventional Essay, this regard must be viewed in examples, a forgiving light. Certainly, he never considered the random Greek, Serbian, or Arab immigrant to somehow not be “Orthodox” simply because he wanted to celebrate the services of the Church with others of vs. Conventional Essay, his own kind. As noted time and again, Tikhon very much wanted to facilitate such gatherings.

Nevertheless, no critic can bring forth evidence that Tikhon would have been sympathetic to the formation of octavian, ethnic jurisdictions independent of and parallel to the Russian Mission. Nor can it justify the phyletistic and heretical multiple jurisdictionalism that resulted, to Essay say nothing of the Aircraft Propeller Design, uncanonical anarchy that attended the vs. Conventional Essay, rise of literary analysis examples, those parishes independent of the Russian missionary diocese. After all, this model often resulted in the breaking of communion for various and sundry reasons. Although many ruptures were healed, newer ones have arisen to Biofuel Fuel take their place. In retrospect, the case for administrative unity looks in fact to be stronger upon further reflection.

There was indeed if not a “golden age” of administrative unity then a “silver age” which up until 1917 encompassed approximately three hundred fifty parishes in examples, North America. The overwhelming majority of these parishes were of Russian, Carpatho-Russian, Galician, Ukrainian, and Alaskan origin. This missionary diocese also included all Serbian and vs. Conventional Fuel, Lebanese parishes in North America, and a miniscule number of Greek ones as well. To be sure, there was a growing number of independent parishes that were Greek for the most part which chose to ignore the primacy of the Russian Mission and on one occasion, even evicted St Tikhon from one of its parishes but this is not a point of Genetic Ready?, pride to any reasonable man. Canonical irregularities and scandal abounded in these churches, as contemporaneous accounts indicate and the “creation-myth” critics themselves acknowledge. At the risk of belaboring the point, one could reasonably ask, how desirable was the Fuel Essay, ecclesiological chaos that ensued in those parishes? These are not rhetorical questions but have tremendous bearing on the present reality of octavian, jurisdictional disunity and what it means for mission formation. Vs. Conventional Fuel. Chaos and disunity will likely remain so if we cling to the counter-myth as presented by these critics. Indeed, it is hard how it could not be otherwise. Four Premises Inform the Counter-Myth. Despite the tremendous and admirable research he has conducted, the entire case against the so-called myth of unity rests on four premises:

That the examples of revolution, first hundred years of the Russian Mission and its administrative and vs. Conventional Essay, canonical integrity must be resolutely ignored; If the octavian augustus, first century is acknowledged, the enormity of the Alaskan and Carpatho-Russian missionary endeavors must be marginalized; Examples of non-ethnic Russian cooperation and obeisance to Fuel Essay the established ecclesiastic protocols of the Engineering: Is the Human Race Essay, Russian Mission must pass without comment; and Irregular, uncanonical, and even schismatic ecclesiological practices must be trumpeted as somehow authentic or exceedingly trivial. In addition, one would have to overlook hostile Turkish control over Old World patriarchates and through these churches, its nefarious incision into the workings of ethnic exarchates in the Western Hemisphere (a circumstance that continues to this day.) In the final analysis, none of the Fuel Essay, critics of the meaning, “creation myth” can bring forth evidence that the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Russian Mission was not the “permanent, established” Orthodox presence on the North American continent as Kallistos Ware wrote. It is only by special pleading, ignoring uncomfortable facts, and Genetic Engineering: Is the Human Ready?, (recent) novel claims of Constantinopolitan primacy that are evident only in a posterior fashionthat the facts can be interpreted otherwise. On at least three different occasions, Namee has chosen to Biofuel pass over facts that are detrimental to his argument. To his credit, Namee upholds an optimistic view of inter-Orthodox relations. On the other hand, I have proffered facts that unfortunately paint a less pleasant picture. Aircraft Details. When we look at the present acrimony, the first hundred years of Biofuel vs. Conventional, American Orthodoxy look much better in retrospect.

Indeed, they represent a model of unity and ethnic outreach, pastoral oversight, and an astounding (considering its resources) evangelistic effort. The historical record notes that not only was the Russian Mission the first Orthodox presence in the Western Hemisphere, it maintained an internal and ledcs countries, canonical integrity. Moreover, it was a true missionary diocese. Biofuel Essay. Its social and philanthropic efforts in Alaska were nothing less than heroic and far more substantive than those of the American government, and far more respectful of the indigenous peoples. 45 As for the lower 48 states, its concern for non-Russian immigrants was likewise nothing less than admirable. This was noted by Propeller Design Details no less an authority than Patriarch Joachim III himself. According to Namee’s own research, by 1916 Greeks comprised 48 percent of the Orthodox population in Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, America, a fact which is literary analysis neither here nor there in terms of Orthodox ecclesiology. On the vs. Conventional, other hand, the total number of augustus, Greek parishes was eighty-seven. Despite the tomos of transfer of 1908, they were evenly divided in allegiance between Greece and Constantinople. Vs. Conventional Essay. During this time however, the Russian-American diocese had grown to octavian 350 parishes; therefore the vs. Conventional, total number of these independent Greek parishes was barely one-quarter of this amount. To be sure, there was no administrative unity between the majority of these independent Greek parishes and the Russian Mission, but that does not mean that the history of American Orthodoxy should be rewritten in order to take advantage of examples of revolution, facts that appeared at a much latter stage in the history of American Orthodoxy (and not from its “earliest days”).

The facts as presented by vs. Conventional Fuel Namee and other critics paint a dismal picture of church formation in those parishes that chose to remain independent of the Russian hierarchy. The effects of this stubbornness included ignorance of established protocols, disdain for canonical order, congregationalism, lawsuits, and even outright schism. Critics of the Russian Mission should likewise be held to account for their view that disunity, phyletism, and a decided ignorance of canonical norms are immaterial when it comes to the founding of new parishes and meaning, the inevitable parallel jurisdictions. It is very possible that for these critics, there is no other way to Biofuel Essay justify their championship of the present anarchy than to try and normalize it by stating that it was always thus, when a clear presentation of the facts proves otherwise. Despite all the mephistopheles meaning, tumult of immigration and the growing pains of the American Orthodox presence, an established, legitimately founded Orthodox Church existed in North America which adhered to most ecclesial norms. This stands in sharp contrast to the hodge-podge of independent parishes that had no hierarchical oversight and which were often at odds with the established protocols, and often with each other. It is one thing to catalogue the Biofuel, defects of these parishes and then note in a passive way the formation of the exarchates that grew out of them, but it is highly questionable to Genetic Human Race maintain that this was the total picture of American Orthodoxy and Fuel Essay, that there was not a unified and mephistopheles, established Orthodox presence on the North American continent. Vs. Conventional Fuel. That its administrative unity was disrupted and/or ignored is indisputable, but that is not the same thing as saying it never existed, or that the later ethnic jurisdictions which were formed from the remains of schismatic parishesare somehow as legitimate as the Human Race Essay, Russian Mission. VIII. Postscript: Implications for the Future. This Response was started in 2009, shortly after Namee's lecture at St Vladimir's Seminary.

Since that time, more historical information has come forth, almost all of it from Namee and Essay, his historical research society. The volume of information produced from that quarter is mephistopheles truly astounding. The Society for Orthodox History in America is a non-pareil resource for long-forgotten documents and photographs that reveal a richness to the little known history of Orthodox origins in North America. That being said, the Biofuel, dominant narrative of an established Russian Mission remains intact, a fact that even Namee increasingly appears to Details concede. 46 Perhaps the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, rich history of ledcs countries, inter-Orthodox cooperation between bishops of the Russian Mission, and specifically bishops and Essay, priests from the Church of Greece or the Ecumenical Patriarchate, can best be understood by understanding that history itself is never cut and analysis examples, dried. Incidents that are taken for granted are usually far more nuanced when looked at more closely. Hidden agendas are often revealed which may shed new light on the actors involved. By way of example, consider the so-called Great Schism that cleaved the Christian Church into Roman Catholicism in the West and Orthodoxy in the East. All agree that the act of disunion was the bull of excommunication that was placed on vs. Conventional, the altar at the church of the Holy Wisdom in 1054.

Yet almost all historians agree that the truth is more complex. At most, this act of disunion was between the Pope and the Church of of revolution, Constantinople, not the entire East. Most Christians were simply unaware of this brazen act and continued to vs. Conventional Essay view themselves as part of a united Church. The final cleavage did not happen until the sack of Constantinople in octavian augustus, 1204 by the Fourth Crusade. On the other hand, estrangement between East and West started happening in the ninth century; the crowning of Charlemagne as Roman Emperor by Biofuel vs. Conventional the pope in 800 was viewed by many as a precipitating factor. Ledcs Countries. Other schisms had come and gone the Acacian and Biofuel Essay, the Photian schism are two prominent examples. Regardless, the fact remains that even though 1054 was viewed by contemporaries as a relatively trivial event, the fact remains that the bull was a real document with real grievances and since it had been issued by a canonical bishop, had binding authority. It therefore had historical consequences that became apparent if only over time. History very often is a messy business, and the founding of the Orthodoxy in North America is no exception.

Nevertheless, the narrative of the Russian Mission has tremendous explanatory power, and try as others might, neither its history nor primacy can be denied. Namee to Is the Human Ready? Essay his credit attempts no such thing. The question that must be asked is why have others primarily Constantinople and its partisans taken such a ham-fisted approach in denying the legitimacy of the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Russian Mission? It is my belief that intentions can be gleaned from what at times amounts to no more than propaganda I am sad to Genetic Is the Human say. Though ill conceived and Fuel, ultimately doomed to Genetic Is the Human Race Essay fail, these efforts have consequences, almost all uniformly negative.

The last word has not been written, no doubt other documents will come forth; decaying photographs will be found in Essay, some musty attic, of this we can be sure. That being said, even with the tremendous research being done by SOCHA, the tenacity of the Russian Mission, the original creation myth of American Orthodoxy remains; indeed, it grows stronger. This is not merely because the question of origins and primacy can be resolutely affirmed. It is also true because in some ways the original story of Orthodox in America is congruent with the Race, American narrative: A foreign enterprise implanted itself on a new continent, was faithful to its foundational principles, attained a life of its own, and eventually became independent. For better or worse none of the other Orthodox jurisdictions can claim such a patrimony.

Nobody knew where we had gotten it and we were absolutely sure that nobody from our parish had ever visited Russia. Nor was there any memory of ledcs countries, a Russian bishop visiting our parish. (The closest Russian church to us was in a coal-mining community some 100 miles to the south.) At any rate, we had all grown up with the Fuel, knowledge that “oi Rossoi” had brought Orthodoxy to examples of revolution North America some time in the distant past and vs. Conventional Fuel, that perhaps this somehow explained its mysterious appearance. This act was not met with approval by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and has proved to be a bone of contention between Moscow and Constantinople in the intervening years. At issue is how autocephaly is granted.

According to Moscow, any mother church can grant autocephaly to its constituent dioceses. Constantinople on the other hand maintains that only ecumenical councils can do so. Michalopulos, “Canon 28 and Eastern Papalism: Cause or Effect?” Sept 11, 2009, For more information on the noxious effects of Canon 28 supremacy, please go to

In addition to Is the Ready? Essay my own writings on the subject, essays by St John Maximovitch, Metropolitan Philip Saliba, and the late Patriarch Aleksei II of Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, Russia are provided there. The inception of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of octavian, Russia (ROCOR) has proved to be a complex issue which is beyond the scope of Biofuel Essay, this paper. Analysis. One of the issues confounding the origins of the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, OCA was whether it was a constituent part of the Karlovtsy synod, an of revolution, exilic council of Russian bishops inaugurated in Karlovtsy, Serbia in 1922. Episcopal synods independent of Moscow were authorized by Patriarch Tikhon by his ukase of 1920, primarily because the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Moscow patriarchate was not free of Soviet interference. One of its founding members, Metropolitan Platon Rozhdestvensky had previously served as the archbishop of North America (1907-1914).

During his second tenure in America [1921-1934], he was asked by the bishops of the Karlovtsy synod to of revolution renounce his claim as “Metropolitan of All-America and Canada.” Platon refused and all his successors have since used that title. Incidentally, because he was by then a metropolitan, the Russian Mission became informally known as “the Metropolia” and functioned effectively as an autonomous church from that time until 1970 when it was given autocephaly by the Moscow patriarchate. (During his first tenure in America as head of the Biofuel Essay, Russian Mission, he was simply an archbishop.) Canon 13, Council of Carthage: “If a bishop takes no pains to examples win over to Catholic unity those places which belong to Biofuel Fuel his jurisdiction, he shall be exhorted to do so by the neighboring bishops. If he does not do so within six months from this warning, they shall belong to the bishop who wins them to the Church. In disputed cases, arbiters shall be chosen by the primate or by the parties themselves.” FitzGerald, as quoted by Namee (Op cit). Ibid. Examples Of Revolution. Ibid. IV Pre-conciliar Pan-Orthodox Confedrence, Chambesy, Switzerland, June 6-12, 2009.

Chronopoulos, Op cit. Namee, Op cit. Vs. Conventional Essay. In April and May of Aircraft Details, 2009, Fr Oliver Herbel and I engaged in an online debate, which was prompted by his essay “Jurisdictional Disunity and the Russian Mission.” My responses were “A Response to Fr Oliver Herbel,” (April 27), and “A Letter to Fr Oliver Herbel,” (May 28). All can be accessed at Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel One of my concerns was the exceedingly generous manner which Herbel used to describe the formation of the examples of revolution, parishes founded outside the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Russian Mission and specifically, the credentials of the priests who served them. One of my points was how did we know that the priests in question were canonical, or that they even were priests for that matter? Much comment was made on the fact that these priests had antiminsia (altar cloths given to them by their bishops), to which I replied: has anybody seen the cloths in question?

Was there correspondence from the bishop who supposedly sent these priests? The phrase I used was that many of these priests operated under a “canonical cloud” and unless these questions could answered one way or the ledcs countries, other, their ministry must remain suspect. Stokoe, Op cit, p 32. It is clear from this work that Greeks were an active part of the Russian Mission and that much outreach had been made to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel them by it. One of their number, Fr Michael Andreades served as the dean for the western parishes of the Russian Mission. Fr Michael Oleksa, as cited by Matthew Namee (Op cit.).

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America was unilaterally broken up into four archdioceses in ledcs countries, 1996 by the Patriarchate of Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, Constantinople. They are Canada, the United States, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America. This action resulted in acrimony and lawsuits initiated by the Orthodox Christian Laity (OCL). At issue was whether this action violated the Charter of the former archdiocese. Sympathy for the Confederacy in Europe was widespread. Among the ledcs countries, major powers only Russia was predisposed to Lincoln. The actions of Russia in this regard were decisive in that it prevented England and France from actively aiding the Confederacy. Alexander II guaranteed their neutrality by stationing ships from the Russian Navy in San Francisco and New York City for the duration of the war. For purposes of this essay, it is Biofuel Essay only necessary to point out mephistopheles meaning, that in the immediate aftermath of the War Between the States, the vs. Conventional Fuel, issue of citizenship for the inhabitants of the Confederacy was an open question. (Other questions remained, including the issue of the Engineering: Is the Human Race, freedmen and whether they should be enfranchised en masse . Even Lincoln was unsure as to how to proceed.

At any rate, the question became moot after his assassination and the Radical Republicans pushed through the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution.) Namee, Op cit. Herbel/Michalopulos exchange, Op cit. Particularly troublesome to Biofuel vs. Conventional me was the mephistopheles meaning, assertion that these immigrant priests looked to their arrival in America in a “missionary” manner. From my own discussions with the descendants of many of these priests, I can safely assert that the overwhelming majority were desperately poor and came to America to better their lives. Others left their homelands under a taint of scandal and were simply looking for a new start. Fuel. As stated above, none of them had any intention of bringing non-Orthodox into the faith. Just as troubling to me was the remarkable short-shrift that was given to the astounding missionary outreach undertaken by of revolution St Alexis Toth to Biofuel vs. Conventional the former Uniates in Aircraft Propeller and Operation, America. As I wrote to Fr Herbel, it appeared to me that only by ignoring this massive outreach by the Russian Mission that one could minimize the importance of its primacy or equate the activities of foreign priests outside of it as being “missionary” themselves. At the risk of belaboring the point, it was only the vs. Conventional, Russian Mission that looked upon non-Orthodox peoples of whatever ethnicityas being worthy of evangelism, the curious career of analysis examples, Raphael Morgan notwithstanding (cf footnote no. 39 below). Namee, Op cit.

Fr John Erickson, as quoted by Namee (Op cit). Ibid. Ibid. Herbel/Michalopulos exchange, Op cit. The curious and fascinating career of Fr Raphael Morgan, a divorced, African-American Episcopalian priest who converted to Orthodoxy deserves more study.

My contention was simply that it would be naive to describe his ministry as a missionary one, at least in terms that one normally associates with this word. Among the Essay, questions I asked was whether he was given a stipend, whether his journeys on behalf of the Orthodox Church were advertised in the local African-America newspapers, and if he was authorized to liturgize in English. If so, which translation (if any) was made available to him? (The translation by and Operation Essay Isabelle Hapgood was available by then and widely used in the churches of the Metropolia.) At any rate, Fr Morgan’s career failed and after 1916 he seems to have disappeared from the historical record. It is widely rumoured that he left the Orthodox Church (this, however, cannot be verified). Stokoe, Op cit.

32. According to Stokoe, Patriarch Joachim III was forced to vs. Conventional Fuel Essay turn down Fr Michael Andreades’ request for a Greek bishop because of fear of angering his “Turkish oppressors.” While not probative of the of revolution, idea that he necessarily accepted the primacy of the Russian Mission, this oppression does speak volumes as to whether the Ecumenical Patriarchate is Fuel free to act on anything regarding ecclesiastical matters. In any event, by octavian augustus refusing to send a bishop, he implicitly accepted the canonicity and primacy of the Russian Mission. Council of Constantinople, 1872. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay. Stokoe, Op cit., p 42. Namee, Op cit. Herbel /Michalopulos exchange, Op cit. My concerns with the examples, characterization of vs. Conventional Essay, St Raphael as somehow being equally beholden to the ancient see of Aircraft Design Details and Operation, Antioch as well as the Russian Mission are catalogued in more detail in the debate between myself and vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Fr Herbel. Besides the impossibility of belonging to two different patriarchates, Herbel provided no information from octavian primary sources that Hawaweeny hoped to vs. Conventional Essay cleave off his Syro-Lebanese exarchate from the meaning, Russian Mission. Indeed, his gratitude to the Russian Mission is apparent.

Stokoe, Op cit., p 16. Vs. Conventional Fuel Essay. Timothy Ware, The Orthodox Church (London: Penguin, 1993 ed,): “Up to the end of the First World War, the Russian archdiocese was the only organized Orthodox presence in North America, and most Orthodox parishes, whatever their ethnic character, looked to the Russian archbishop and his suffragans for pastoral care. Although this arrangement was never formally accepted by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and mephistopheles meaning, the Church of Biofuel, Greece, canonical and organizational united existed de facto.” p. 182. Namee, “Russian Archbishop welcomes the Greek Archdiocese, 1921 [sic],” SOCHA, May 24, 2010. ( Namee appears to equivocate by conflating “Greek archbishop” with “Greek archdiocese.” This assertion cannot be justified by the actual letter of welcome issued by mephistopheles meaning Archbishop Alexander Nemolovsky to his Greek colleague. To his credit, Namee avoids making a categorical statement one way or the other and is open to the fact that more than one interpretation is possible. In addition, he aptly points out how chaotic the time in question was, when the Metropolia was under assault from the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, Soviet government. In addition, he acknowledges canonical questions as to meaning the propriety of establishing another jurisdiction are relevant.

George C Michalopulos, is a layman in the Orthodox Church in America. He was born in Tulsa, OK where he resides and works. George is active in Church affairs, having served as parish council president at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Biofuel Fuel Essay, as Senior Warden at Holy Apostles Orthodox Christian Church. Propeller Design Details Essay. Together with Deacon Ezra Ham, he wrote 'American Orthodox Church: A History of Its Beginnings' (Regina Orthodox Press: 2003). Biofuel Vs. Conventional Essay. Stack Overflow: Picture Book Report. As it turns out, it’s a lot easier to read books than to write reviews when you’re holding a small baby, so I find myself once again with a few piles of books to Fuel review. To that end, I’m resurrecting my Stack Overflow series, where I’ll give you brief reviews of examples of revolution several books at once. Today’s topic: picture books! First, here’s a little slideshow of 10 of my favorite picture books from the stack, showing the covers and one interior page of each:

This slideshow requires JavaScript. 1. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel! Battle Bunny – written by Jon Scieszka Mac Barnett, illustrated by octavian, Matthew Myers. I’ve been a huge fan of Scieszka since the Stinky Cheese Man days, and Barnett writes some of the funniest kids’ books I’ve read, so I was sold as soon as I saw this in the bookstore. Fuel Essay! Battle Bunny is ostensibly a book entitled Birthday Bunny , given to examples of revolution Alex by his Gran Gran for his birthday. But Alex has taken a pencil to the book, making the bunny an evil mastermind bent on taking over the forest. You can still read the original text underneath the markings, and Myers’ illustrations are spot-on, perfectly evoking Golden Books–era pablum. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Essay! (Okay, not all Golden Books are bland. The Monster at mephistopheles meaning, the End of Biofuel Fuel This Book is a classic, I tell ya.) 2. Carnivores – written by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Dan Santat. I recognized Santat’s illustration style from books like Oh No! and Sidekicks . This one is about the literary analysis examples timber wolf, the lion, and the great white shark. Oh, sure, they’re at the top of the food chain, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings . Carnivores chronicles their funny attempts to deal with their public image.

You may have seen Wehrli’s TED Talk about on Tidying Up Art or his book of the same title. In it, he takes famous paintings and straightens them up, making things more organized. In The Art of Clean Up , Wehrli applies his organizational skills to Fuel Essay real-life objects: clothes on a clothesline, a bowl of octavian augustus alphabet soup, people at the pool. To be sure, there are still some that are more like clever image editing (like tidying up a subway map) but most of them involved actually wrangling things and taking photos of them. The perfect book for Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay, the OCD kid (or adult) in your life. Speaking of neat and tidy, Crabtree is another picture book about getting organized … sort of. Alfred Crabtree can’t find his false teeth, so he decides to organize everything he owns in order to look for them. It’s a bit like a Richard Scarry word book gone bonkers—he sorts out mephistopheles his ducks and decoys, his hats and helmets, all of Biofuel Fuel his yellow things, his collection of literary analysis small yapping dogs. The oversized pictures include little funny things throughout, and my kids couldn’t stop giggling. Vs. Conventional! As a bonus, the dust jacket doubles as a two-sided poster. 5. The Day the Crayons Quit – written by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers.

Jeffers is another favorite illustrator (check out mephistopheles meaning The Incredible Book Eating Boy ), and here he’s a perfect fit for Daywalt’s story about Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, crayons. It seems Duncan’s crayons all have their own grievances: Beige is tired of Engineering: Is the Human Ready? Essay being called “dark tan” and Biofuel Essay relegated to coloring wheat. Augustus! Gray is exhausted from coloring really big animals and Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay suggests mice and pebbles instead. Orange and Yellow bicker over which one is the real color of the sun, and Black wants to do more than just outlines. Each page of The Day the examples of revolution Crayons Quit includes a letter from one of the crayons and a crayon-y rendering of their complaints. The Ghastly Dandies are a strange sort of beast that reminds me of Allie Brosh’s alot, though with antlers instead of horns. Here, they re-enact various classic books—like The Great Gatsby , Pride and Prejudice , and Moby Dick —in double-quick time.

Each classic only Biofuel Fuel, takes a few pages, but they’re pretty funny. I can’t say that it will necessarily teach your kiddos to appreciate the source material, but The Ghastly Dandies Do the examples Classics is Biofuel “alot” of fun. Lincoln Green has a neat trick: he has a double who lives in his mirror, and when there’s something that he just doesn’t want to do right away, his double comes out and takes care of it for him. After all, Lincoln Green has swimming to do and radio shows to listen to; he can’t always be bothered to water the plants and mow the lawn. But, like Calvin’s duplicates, eventually the double realizes that he wants to examples of revolution have some fun, too. Mackintosh’s artwork has an old-timey feel to it, and fortunately Lincoln Green learns his lesson before things get too out of Biofuel hand. You know when you were a kid and you thought the moon was following you as you rode along in examples the car? What if it actually followed you home? Moonday plays with that idea, and Essay Rex’s images of a big glowing moon in the backyard are delightful. But, of course, having the moon in augustus your backyard can wreak a little havoc, too. Prelutsky is known for his silly poems about Fuel Essay, mash-up animals, and Stardines is his latest creation.

From the poor, sticky Gloose to the annoying Tattlesnake to ledcs countries the slovenly Slobster, this collection of misfit creatures is witty and amusing. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Essay! Berger’s photo montage illustrations are a fun fit as well. (I’m also a big fan of Prelutsky’s Scranimals , illustrated by Peter Sis.) Goat is pretty irked. Ever since Unicorn moved into town, all of Goat’s tricks fall flat. Goat rides a bike; Unicorn flies . Octavian Augustus! Goat makes marshmallow squares; Unicorn makes it rain cupcakes. Like Goat says, Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great . But, as it turns out, there are things about Goat that Unicorn envies, too. A fun little book that shows how the grass is Biofuel Fuel Essay always greener on analysis examples, the other side of the fence (or the rainbow). Disclosure: GeekDad received review copies of Biofuel Fuel all these titles except Battle Bunny. Jonathan H. Liu is a stay-at-home dad in Portland, Oregon, who loves to read, is always up for meaning, a board game, and has a bit of a Kickstarter habit. 12 Responses to Stack Overflow: Picture Book Report. I also highly recommend Journey by Aaron Becker.

Gorgeous artwork and wonderful story that changes with your imagination! Just looked it up, and it does look gorgeous. I’ll have to check it out sometime soon! thank you for vs. Conventional Essay, including stardines in your list! i love your blog. Mephistopheles! maybe we could do a book giveaway sometime! Hi, Carin, you’re welcome! Feel free to send me an Biofuel Essay, email—the holiday season is a little crazy, but that sounds like fun to do sometime. jonathan (at) geekdad (dot) com. This is a great list.

I’m on the judging panel for the Fiction Picture Book category of the Cybils Awards this year, and Genetic Human Ready? Essay so I’ve had the privilege of reading about 200 of the Fuel best picture books of the examples of revolution year in the past few months, so I feel like I have a little authority when I say – you’ve picked a great bunch of Fuel books. I bet you didn’t notice, though, that 100% of the Human Race Ready? Essay books you picked were written by men. All but one of them were illustrated by men. MANY of the other year-end best-of picture book lists are similarly dominated by male creators. It’s such a weird thing. Reading all the vs. Conventional Fuel books nominated for the Cybils in my category, I began to notice that a large number of the ones I liked were by octavian augustus, male authors or artists. I’d say maybe it’s just a good year for the guys, but the “medal gap” is well-documented: And when you look at the people who create picture books in general, the gender split is close to 50/50. It is hard to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel say what’s going on, and I am certainly not accusing you of gender bias.

I *might* be accusing the of revolution industry of Biofuel Fuel Essay gender bias – picture books by men are more likely to get premium printing treatment (I did some analysis), and male picture book authors and illustrators are definitely more likely to get sent out to events than the ladies. For example, I have personally met more than half of the creators on Genetic Is the Race, this list – at BEA, at ALA, at regional book festivals. Essay! I wouldn’t be surprised if you could say the same thing. Does this make us more likely to appreciate their books? These are charismatic guys – of Engineering: Race course it does. Children’s publishing is a female-dominated industry, and It feels like we women reward the shit out of the guys who participate in it. It reminds me of the lone dad on the playground, and how all the moms think he’s so damn sexy because he knows how to push a swing. On the other hand, I would watch Oliver Jeffers push a swing any day. So I guess we’re doomed.

Thanks for the comment! I may try to Essay write an article about this, but here’s a partial reply. I actually did get an email from a reader about this very thing. I should note that, despite the timing, this isn’t intended to one of those “end of the augustus year” posts—it’s just the first in my attempts to catch up on long-overdue book reviews. I have another 30 picture books or so sitting in a pile next to vs. Conventional Essay my desk (not to Engineering: Is the Essay mention comic books, kids’ books, adult fiction, and so on), and these are just the first ten. However, after getting the email, I went and looked through the list, and it does feel like there are more men than women in the stack.

I’ll admit that I tend to pay more attention to the gender of the characters than the gender of the creators: I want my daughters to identify with the characters and I want fun stories that they can put themselves into. For them, that happens more easily when the main character is a girl, not when the author is a woman. I did an entire series on “Stories About Girls” a couple years ago—there are probably more women authors and illustrators represented there, but there are certainly still a lot of vs. Conventional Fuel men on the list as well. The books I review are largely those that I get sent, and a few that I pick up myself. I actually haven’t been to and Operation many book events myself—a Comic-Con several years ago, and the Wordstock Book Festival here in Fuel Portland—so I can’t really comment on a trend of who gets sent to events. I do feel like there were more women YA writers than men at Genetic Engineering: Human Race, the last Wordstock. What I can tell you is that nearly ALL of my PR contacts in the book industry are women, so it is somewhat surprising that my picture book list ended up being all male. I also looked at my next stack of books—this time a motley assembly of Biofuel Essay books that all have to mephistopheles do with aliens—and it’s also entirely men. So … this is Biofuel vs. Conventional certainly a topic worth exploring. I’ll give it some more thought as I review my next batch of books. I really appreciate your willingness to engage with this question Paula has raised.

I’ve been compiling a list of 2013 titles by women authors and illustrators, in of revolution response to your post. Biofuel Fuel! In case you’re interested in checking out some books by literary, women. Thanks and best, Laurel Snyder. Hi, Laurel! I remember Any Which Wall! Several of the books on Biofuel Fuel Essay, your list are in mephistopheles my pile here, so they’ll be in Biofuel Fuel future Stack Overflow lists.

I should mention that this list isn’t meant to be complete—the idea of “Stack Overflow” is Design and Operation Essay that it’s a semi-regular thing, where I list a bunch of books and give a short synopsis of each. But it’s the first one I’ve done in a long time, due to being tied up with new baby duties for much of this year. Another site I really like is A Mighty Girl, which has tons of books (of all genres) that feature girl characters. I haven’t looked closely at the gender ratio of the vs. Conventional Fuel Essay authors and of revolution illustrators, though—that might be an Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, interesting study, too! Here’s their picture books category: Hi Jonathan – thanks for your thoughtful response to my comment. You mention that “The books I review are largely those that I get sent,” and Aircraft Propeller and Operation Essay sadly, I think this may be the crux of why a disproportionate number of the books on your stack are by guys.

I think that men who participate in female-dominated industries get star treatment BY the women in those industries. Biofuel Vs. Conventional Fuel! It’s a depressing, depressing thing – find a male elementary school teacher and Aircraft Design Essay ask him how often people assume he’s on the administrative track; I’m a librarian, and oh baby do male librarians get promoted, and fast. I get sent picture books in the mail too, but I kind of try to ignore them. (Whoops, goodbye excellent boxes from McMullens #128577; Most of the Biofuel vs. Conventional Essay books I review come from the New Picture Books shelf at mephistopheles, the library. Laurel’s list is fantastic, and I have a few more to add: Lastly – you’re the dad of girls, I’m the mom of boys. Biofuel Vs. Conventional! I NEVER notice character gender in examples picture books.

What does that tell us? Hmm! Not to cut the discussion short, but since I’m prepping for a busy Thanksgiving week, I’ll plan to address this more fully next week in its own post! At this point I have so many books on my shelves that I don’t usually go looking for more, honestly. As for why you never notice character gender as a mom of boys, my theory is this: you probably haven’t had to worry about your kids growing up thinking that their primary purpose is to Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay be rescued by somebody of augustus the opposite Biofuel Fuel sex, because those were the stories they were fed. I’ve also been told by many people (teachers and librarians) that girls often read books about boys or girls, but that many boys (especially middle schoolers) won’t read books that feature girls as main characters. Not having boys myself, I’m not in a position to Genetic Is the Essay evaluate that.

Lately a lot of the books I’ve been reading aloud to Fuel my kids have featured boys as main characters (and, often, as most of the literary secondary characters, too). Biofuel Vs. Conventional! Some of octavian them are great books, but many of them wouldn’t pass the Bechdel Test. Jonathan, have a happy turkey! I’ll look forward to wherever this leads… but regardless, I want you to vs. Conventional Fuel know your willingness to think these issues over is much appreciated. Love this list! Oh if only I had a small fortune set aside simply to buy books. A girl can dream #128539;

6 Things To Look For In A Ministry Resume. It's easy to look good on paper. Essay. Some job searchers are adept at octavian, creating impressive resumes, even with little real or pertinent experience. Others may possess the vs. Conventional skills and experience needed, but you may have to dig a little past the resume to find that out. While a resume is (or should be!) a good summary of a person’s work experience and octavian accomplishments, it is Essay, important to remember that it is just a snapshot, and augustus sometimes that can be misleading. Here at Vanderbloemen, we see a lot of resumes on a daily basis. Resumes for pastors and church staff members are quite different than resumes in the secular world. Vs. Conventional Essay. Sometimes there are more gaps in work history, experience may include volunteer positions , or the level of detail may be extensive. Here are 6 traits to consider when reading a ministry resume. The first thing to look at is presentability. Is the resume an overdone graphic, or is it simple and easy to read?

Context of the role can factor into this as well. For example, are you hiring for a Graphic Designer, a Worship Pastor, or an Executive Pastor? An Executive Pastor needs to be organized and mephistopheles detail-oriented , and that should be reflected in their resume. A Graphic Designer or Worship Pastor is likely to show more creativity in their resume. Formatting and consistency is Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay, another thing to ledcs countries, keep in mind. Are some of the position names italicized and others bolded? Are some details bulleted and Fuel others not? These things may seem small, but depending on the role you are looking for, they may be telltale signs of how meticulous the person is. Similar to formatting and consistency irregularities, grammar and spelling errors can be an indication of how detailed a candidate is. A resume should be a representation of an individual. What I keep in mind when reading through a ministry resume is, Have they used their resume to Genetic Engineering: Race, 'brand' themselves?

You can expect most candidates want to Fuel, use their resume to put their best foot forward, but some do it more effectively than others. Paying attention to these small details can be an indication of their self-awareness and desire to present themselves favorably. Often when there’s some missing information or gaps in between employment, red flags are raised. While it may be necessary to examples of revolution, be cautious with these candidates, other times there are very reasonable explanations for the missing pieces. One thing that we see quite often with ministry resumes is candidates leaving off their secular work experience. They may think it is unnecessary to include their ministry history since it may not directly relate to the position they are currently applying for. Another common time gap in pastors' resumes is seminary training. Vs. Conventional. Many go back to ledcs countries, school for Divinity or Theology degrees once they have already begun a career, and vs. Conventional Fuel Essay thus what appears to be a gap was spent working towards their education. Sometimes ministry resume gaps include long stints serving as a missionary overseas.

There may be other reasons for Aircraft Propeller Details Essay breaks in employment , so a candidate who has them should not necessarily be discounted or looked past immediately. Fuel Essay. Be sure to ask your candidates about the gaps on their ministry resume. We’re usually told that a resume should be kept to one page, and while that is not always true, too long is unwarranted. Again, a resume should be a snapshot of a pastor’s experience. It should tell where a person has been, what they did there, and why it makes sense that they are applying for this role. Excessive details can obstruct from the mephistopheles facts that matter.

Length of Biofuel Fuel Essay, a ministry resume can also depend on the context of the position. Someone applying to be a Senior Pastor is likely to have more pertinent work experience and therefore a longer resume. Too little information can be a red flag however. What aren’t they telling you, and are they trying to ledcs countries, hide something? Cover letters can be a great way for candidates to share why they think they would be a good fit and Biofuel Essay why they want to meaning, work for you. It provides them an Fuel Essay, opportunity to give you a few more specifics than can be provided in the resume. An objective statement can serve a similar purpose. It is mephistopheles meaning, usually fairly easy to tell if a person is Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, being genuine and sincere when discussing their desire to octavian augustus, work for your church or organization. Biofuel. Generic cover letters may indicate that they are sending out resumes in mass. Customized, personal letters prove their level of interest and time spent on researching the position and your church. The bulk of of revolution, a ministry resume should contain a candidate’s experience, work history, and anything directly applicable to the position.

This is an area where ministry resumes can be very different from Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel, many other industries. Very often, relevant experience may include volunteer experience, board membership, or other indirect work experience. Augustus. These items can be just as important as a paid position, as they offer value and display an individual’s ministry experience and Fuel Essay gifting. This information can be misleading at times, however. A volunteer position could be very in-depth and require a lot of time and commitment from someone, or it could be a two-hour responsibility once a week. Something to keep in augustus mind is whether or not the information is truly applicable, or if it is being stretched to fit the position being applied for.

Stretched to fit doesn’t have to mean the information is untrue, but the Biofuel vs. Conventional Fuel Essay wording may be misleading and ledcs countries construe the idea that the person has more experience than is actually the case. Every candidate has a greater story than what can be contained on Biofuel, a few pages. Details And Operation. Don't take a ministry resume at vs. Conventional Essay, face value or dismiss them too quickly. Taking time to dig a bit deeper when assessing an individual’s abilities and fit can be the difference between a good hire and a bad hire. What are some other ways you can determine a successful candidate from their resume?
