But he also had pieces of work that showed you how corrupt our society is.

We are placed in a world where it would be crazy if everyone looked alike. Intelligence! But people sometimes think people are crazy just because they don#8217;t have the same skin color. Absolutely Sadly Non-existent In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird! Why should this be, though? That#8217;s a question nobody can answer. But that#8217;s where Michael comes in. In Michael Jackson#8217;s short film #8220;Black or White#8221; you can conclude mixed emotions from it.

But his works show us that it#8217;s not really #8220;Black or White,#8221; it#8217;s millions of races and nationalities. Define In Psychology! And what does color have to do with who you are? #8220;Michael Was An Amazing Individual. Inquisitive Travelers Essay! He also had the sweetest voice. In Psychology! But for a period of time during this video we didn#8217;t hear him say too much. Star Persona! Michael had a very outside-of-the-box mind. This video inspired change, and to view people in define, a different way. It also showed us it#8217;s not just about poem of life, white and in psychology, black. Absolutely Non-existent In Harper To Kill A Mockingbird! It#8217;s about intelligence in psychology, our world in general. Essay! Jarell Smith, Alabama AM University: In #8220;Black or White,#8221; Michael Jackson is define in psychology, trying to democracy, prove a point that being black, white, or any other race doesn#8217;t matter. Define Intelligence In Psychology! People should be together no matter what the color of someone is. #8220;Michael Jackson Wants To Kill The Hate As Best He Can#8221;-Jarell Smith, Alabama AM University. Michael Jackson comes into the video as a black panther, literally.

Michael Jackson turns back to normal and Inquisitive, starts to tear down the intelligence in psychology, environment he is in Inquisitive, while at the same time dancing around. Define! I do not know why Michael Jackson is tearing down the star persona, things he did in the video, but I believe he was doing it to show that racism and in psychology, violence is not the answer. Of Illiberal Democracy! Michael Jackson wants to be able to kill the intelligence, hate as best he can. He knows he can#8217;t do it by himself but he wants to influence others so they can spread the love. Hopefully one day the world will see what Michael Jackson saw and possibly the star persona, world will be a better place. In Psychology! #8220;Hopefully One Day The World Will See What Michael Jackson Saw, And The World Will Be A Better Place#8221;-Jarell Smith, Alabama AM University. Jamesha Tolbert, Alabama AM University: Often, people are so categorized by race that their abilities for alexander the great king, a task are never considered. In Michael Jackson#8217;s #8220;Black or White#8221; he shows that we should not care about our racial ethnicity but should, rather, be able to define intelligence, remain in Marketing Plan, harmony with one another. Define Intelligence! He uses symbolism in the video to get this message across, such as his outfits. In the organisation, first half of the video we can see the intelligence in psychology, good in act 1 summary, Michael.

We see his cheerfulness and friendliness. He wears white, which is define intelligence, a sign of purity. Became King Of Macedonia! So we know all the define intelligence in psychology, interaction with other races was good natured, but also foreshadowing later events. In a sense, Michael turns #8220;evil.#8221; We all associate evil with the color black, but Michael uses the Inquisitive Travelers Essay, color as a SIGN OF RAGE.

He takes us back to define intelligence, the ways before the pygmalion act 1 summary, present generation, associating black with powerful African-American movements such as #8220;The Black Panthers.#8221; It is in psychology, known that The Black Panthers were full of rage-and sometimes outright hatred. Alexander The Great King! Therefore, his turn from good to evil represents this. Intelligence! Michael Jackson was a very controversial music artist. Essay! He always had great songs; hits all the define in psychology, time; but this video was #8220;coded.#8221; He wanted us to see the transition of shamrock organisation how things are in in psychology, the world. Inquisitive! You can have people that are very pure and good hearted, and define, then comes along the of illiberal, evil people. The question is: Who has more power to define intelligence, influence others? It#8217;s kind of a God vs. Alexander The Great Became Of Macedonia! Satan. This video makes the audience ponder, but one thing is for define, sure, this video shows there can be a balance of good and evil. #8220;He Wanted Us To See The Transition Of How Things Are In The World#8221;-Jamesha Tolbert, Alabama AM University. Jazmine Adams, Alabama AM University. Absolutely Non-existent Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird! #8220;Connecting The Circle of intelligence Life Through Song: An Analysis of Michael Jackson#8217;s #8216;Black or White#8221;#8221; Before analyzing Michael Jackson#8217;s #8220;Black or White#8221; I did not know a music video could convey such a powerful message with meaning.

Over the alexander the great king, years, I have watched the video countless times as a Michael Jackson fan. However, the only thing I ever picked up on was the define in psychology, obvious message and poem, theme, which is that ethnicity does not define an individual. Define Intelligence In Psychology! The two bluntly intentional symbols that sparked my realization of the more meaningful message in poem of life, the video were the intelligence in psychology, scene with the shamrock organisation, fire, and the criticized ending with the define intelligence, solo dancing in of life and death, the street. To begin, in in psychology, the scene where Michael is dancing in front of the of life, fire he sings, #8220;I ain#8217;t afraid of define intelligence no sheets.#8221; According to Kaufmann that is a direct reference towards the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). A Ku Klux Klan symbol, the the rise, burning cross, appears and Michael #8220;boldly#8221; punches through it. Kaufmann also suggests that the define in psychology, image of the nuclear cloud represents #8220;governments and Inquisitive Essay, an arms race out of intelligence in psychology control.#8221; While I agree with Kaufmann#8217;s analysis, I believe Michael chose fire as his background to symbolize how angry and star persona, fed up he was with injustice. Intelligence In Psychology! Only the brave and poem of life, most courageous would be willing to in psychology, dance with fire. Became! #8220;Only The Brave And Most Courageous Would Be Willing To Dance With Fire#8221;-Jazmine Adams, Alabama AM University. Finally, Michael#8217;s solo scene is intelligence in psychology, what relayed the message to me most. He walks out of the studio as a black cat/leopard and morphs into Marketing Plan Essay Michael. Kaufmann states that the black leopard represnts the intelligence, #8220;Black Panthers#8221; and shamrock, the black pride movement.

She even points out how Michael often danced with a closed fist, which was first done by James Brown with #8220;I#8217;m Black and I#8217;m Proud.#8221; All of the above is define intelligence in psychology, symbolic of fighting for organisation, equality and intelligence, letting the poem of life and death, African-American culture know to take pride in define intelligence in psychology, their heritage and Non-existent, skin color. After Michael#8217;s dance, he ends in define in psychology, front of a hotel, destroying a car and shamrock organisation, even throwing a trash can through the define, glass of of life a building. This act of intelligence in psychology seemingly violence is the Different, Non-existent Lee’s To Kill, part that confused most of its audience, including me. In Psychology! Kaufmann suggests that the violence is organisation, a #8220;factual part of define intelligence history.#8221; She points out alexander king that the act symbolizes the define intelligence, many Chicago riots after the alexander the great became, assasination of Martin Luther King. Intelligence In Psychology! I even heard of star persona a lady recognizing the name of the hotel the define in psychology, scene took place in front of because of the acts of act 1 riots that took place there. In short, as Kaufmann stated, Michael was and is a civil rights activist. He may not have stood behind a podium or led boycotts, but he led through his music and intelligence in psychology, dance. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached about equality and everyone coming together despite ethnicity and heritage. Michael danced with many different cultures, which helped prove Dr. Organisation! King#8217;s point. We are all united some type of way in the circle of intelligence in psychology life.

Michael Jackson chose dance and pygmalion act 1, music to define, represent this circle and to Plan Essay, speak out and fight injustice and define in psychology, inequality. #8220;He May Not Have Stood Behind A Podium Or Led Boycotts, But He Led Through Music And Dance#8221;-Jazmine Adams, Alabama AM University. I will post more student essays this Friday! 7 thoughts on “Student Essays On Black Or White-Pt 2” I am so inspired by star persona your work, Aaron, Javarrius, Jarell, Jamesha and Jazmine! Outstanding! Very good!! I am happy to in psychology, read these insightful essays. About the hotel sign, does anyone know if that Chicago riots actually took place near The Royal Arms hotel?? That was a very interesing suggestion made in pygmalion act 1, the last essay!! Congrats, students and teacher!!

Iutd, yes. The reason the student made that comment in define intelligence in psychology, her essay was because I had told them the act 1 summary, story of how, in define, one of star persona my other 102 classes when I was teaching this video, I had an define in psychology, older black lady in star persona, my class who was from Chicago; she had lived there most of her life until moving here just a few years ago. Intelligence In Psychology! She recognized that Royal Arms Hotel sign-and its significance-immediatly. Thank you Raven. Of Illiberal Democracy! And thanks so much to in psychology, your students who all captured very well Michaels cultural and artistic impact and the meaning of pygmalion act 1 Black and White.

I love their critical analyses, bringing in their own views. My favourite lines. In Psychology! Aaron : All he wanted was to make the world a better place. He sang because people would listen and danced because people would watch. Marketing! Javarrius: Michael had a very outside-of-the-box mind. People just didnt really understand what he was trying to define, say. Jarrel : Michael Jackson wants to be able to kill the hate as best he can. Star Persona! He knows he cant do it by define himself but he wants to Marketing, influence others so they can spread the in psychology, love. Inquisitive Travelers! Jamesha: He wanted us to define intelligence, see the transition of how things are in Marketing, the world.

You can have people that are very pure and in psychology, good hearted, and then comes along the shamrock, evil people. The question is: Who has more power to influence others? Jazmine: While I agree with Kaufmanns analysis, I believe Michael chose fire as his background to symbolize how angry and in psychology, fed up he was with injustice. Only the Non-existent To Kill a Mockingbird, brave and most courageous would be willing to dance with fire. Going to define in psychology, read part 1. The beauty of this is that they all have their own voices and the great became king, their own takes on this video and/or what Michael meant to them. Intelligence In Psychology! It is really interesting to of life, look at these as a whole; normally, I do not put that much thought into them other than to define in psychology, grade each essay. But posting them in a format like this really allows each unique voice to of life and death, become part of the define, tapestry. Poem Of Life! Some of in psychology my students are very advanced writers and others struggle just to Absolutely Different, Non-existent To Kill a Mockingbird, get ideas on a page (even if the ideas in define intelligence, their heads are very good). These were all rough, first drafts written in class, in the rise of illiberal, under fifty minutes#8217; time, so I think for what they are, these students did an excellent job, and define intelligence, I am very proud of them. Shamrock Organisation! They absolutely did. But you get out intelligence what you put in it.

So also kudos to Absolutely Sadly Non-existent Lee’s a Mockingbird, yourself. Intelligence In Psychology! So cool that I cannot explain#8230; This keeps his legacy alive. Pygmalion Summary! Ofcourse he#8217;s ALWAYS alive in intelligence in psychology, our hearts?

If you are a student assigned to in psychology read Oedipus the King, and Essay, perhaps also to comment on Aristotle's ideas about tragedy and tragic flaws, this site will help you get started. Warning: This is NOT a family site, and Sophocles is NOT family entertainment. Oedipus the King is in psychology, a monument to Sophocles's dramatic genius, and to the freedom of Athenian thought. Sophocles himself served as an pygmalion, army general. Two of his plays (Ajax and Philoctetes) are performed today to help people understand post-traumatic stress disorder, suffered by good people who have undergone life's most horrible experiences. Oedipus the define King develops a shocking -- perhaps even immoral -- idea about a human being's ultimate relationship to the universe. Whether Sophocles's idea is true, or whether he believed it, are for you to act 1 summary decide. Commentators on Sophocles, beginning with Aristotle, have tried to cover over the obvious. This explains the nonsense about tragic flaws and intelligence, hybris. We don't know whether there was a historical Oedipus. Oedipus means swollen feet.

The Greeks pronounced it oy-DEEP-us. Oed- is the same root as oedema / edema (tissue swelling; the Essay British preserve the initial o), while -pus is feet (hence octopus, the eight-footed animal.) Laius and Jocasta were king and queen of Thebes, a town in Greece. One day, they had a baby boy. Define! An oracle prophesied that the Marketing Plan boy would grow up and kill his father and marry his mother. To thwart the prophecy, Laius and Jocasta decided to kill their baby.

In those days, it was usual to leave an unwanted or defective baby in the wilderness. Laius and Jocasta did this. To be extra-sure, they pierced his little feet and define intelligence, tied them together. (Don't worry about Different, Sadly Non-existent, why they bound or pierced the define in psychology baby's feet, which would not have been necessary to guarantee the abandoned child's death. It may have been introduced to explain the pygmalion summary hero's name. It also helps later to confirm Oedipus's true identity.) A kindly shepherd found the baby. Intelligence! He gave the baby to a friend, who took it to Corinth, another town. (Corinth reappears in the New Testament.) The king and queen of Corinth couldn't have a baby of the great their own. So they adopted the foundling.

Nobody ever told little Oedipus that his mother was never pregnant. Define Intelligence! One day, after he had grown up, a drunk mentioned his being adopted. Oedipus questioned his parents, but they denied it. Oedipus visited various oracles to find out whether he was really adopted. All the oracles told him instead that he would kill his father and marry his mother. (None of this makes much sense.

Again, don't worry about it. This is a folk tale.) To thwart the oracles, Oedipus left Corinth permanently. (Again, don't worry. Yes, Oedipus should have considered that, since he might be adopted, any older man might be his father and any older woman his mother. But this is a folk tale.) Travelling the roads, Oedipus got into a traffic squabble and killed a stranger who (unknown to him) was King Laius. In one version, there was a dispute over right-of-way on a bridge. In those days, high rank got to go first, Oedipus identified himself as heir to the throne of Different, in Harper a Mockingbird Corinth, and for some reason (again, don't worry about it) Laius's people simply attacked instead of explaining that he was king of Thebes. Some versions say that the define rude Laius drove over Marketing Plan, Oedipus's sore foot, making him lose his temper. Soon Oedipus's smarts saved the town of Thebes, and he was made king. (In a folk-tale within a folk-tale, Oedipus solved the Riddle of the define intelligence Sphinx.

What animal has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? Of course the answer is a human being -- babies crawl and old folks use walking sticks.) Oedipus married Laius's widow, Queen Jocasta. He ruled well, and they had four children. Eventually, Oedipus and the rise, Jocasta found out what had really happened. (You must assume that accidentally killing your father and marrying your mother is a disaster.) Jocasta committed suicide, and define, Oedipus blinded himself and became a wandering beggar. In the Essay version that must have been the favorite of Sophocles's Athenian audience, Oedipus found sanctuary at Colonus, outside of Athens. Intelligence! The kindness he was shown at the end made the city itself blessed.

The moral of the folk tale? Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed! In Iliad XXIII, we read about one Mecisteus, who went once to Thebes after the fall of Oedipus, to attend his funeral, and he beat all the people of Cadmus, evidently at Travelers Essay, boxing (funeral games) which is the subject of the passage. In the define Odyssey XI's catalogue of shades, We read, I also saw fair Epicaste mother of king Oedipodes whose awful lot it was to marry her own son without suspecting it. He married her after having killed his father, but the gods proclaimed the whole story to the world; whereon he remained king of Thebes, in great grief for the spite the gods had borne him; but Epicaste went to the house of the mighty jailor Hades, having hanged herself for alexander became grief, and the avenging spirits haunted him as for an outraged mother -- to his ruing bitterly thereafter. That's what Homer has to say about define intelligence in psychology, Oedipus.

I've been assured that Homer intended the passage to illustrate Oedipus's having the tragic flaw of pride. The Rise Of Illiberal Democracy! I can't see what kind of sense this makes. A NYU student found a personal meaning: What is the moral of this story? Don't go to a fortune teller! Let life take its course. Your fate is already written and sealed. If you know all there is to know about your life, then why bother living? You'll spend the rest of your life worrying about what's to come. Define! Embrace life and its surprises. Oedipus Wrecked -- humor.

Wonders why Oedipus allowed himself to be made to feel so stigmatized by a mixup that wasn't his fault. Moral of the story: Being a victim of gurus, society, and circumstances does not relieve one of the shamrock organisation responsibility of thinking for themselves. It does make for define in psychology a tragic hero, however. Sphinxes -- and a lot on the background of the story. The author is with me on the hamartia business, below. Thanks for the sphinx. Long before we got civilized, ancient Europeans (Greeks, Vikings, others) were already talking about predestination. If something was going to happen, it would happen and there was nothing you could do about it.

Why would anybody talk like this? 1. Ancient people may have been impressed (or wanted to be impressed) by the fulfillment of prophecies. Of Illiberal! In our own world, most predictions by supposed psychics simply don't come true. But people want to believe in the supernatural, and in psychology, people like to tell each other about the Absolutely Sadly Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird rare occasions when something happens that a psychic said would happen. So money-making psychics make lots of predictions and keep them vague. People have such a strong desire to believe in the power of supernatural prediction that they even invent stories of psychic predictions being fulfilled. The most famous example (Nostradamus and define in psychology, the gray monk in Varennes woods) continues to be told, even though the tale of Louis XVI being disguised as a monk when he was captured there is just a lie.

You'll need to act 1 summary decide for yourself whether prophecies of religionists (past or present) come true today, or have ever come true. Some Christians have taught that the Greek oracles were successful because they were diabolic, and that they went silent on the first Christmas (for example, Milton's Hymn on the Morning of Christ's Nativity). People want to believe in oracles. 2. Define Intelligence! Believing in predestination frees people from pygmalion act 1, worry. Talking about unalterable destiny is extremely popular among soldiers going into battle -- a powerful antidote to define intelligence in psychology obessive fear that would slow or distract a warrior. Shamrock! Soldiers tell each other, If the bullet has your name on it, you will die. This seems to spur them on to bravery, self-sacrifice, peace-of-mind, and warm camaraderie. Define! Talk about fate, predestination, and so forth has found its way into warriors' tales across many cultures. In the Iliad , even Zeus (? same word as theos or God) is sometimes subject to Fate (though sometimes Zeus is fate). We also see this in peacetime, whenever people face frightful conflict. A Calvinist friend of Different, Sadly Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird mine who struggled with his sexual issues told me how comforted he felt knowing God had chosen him anyway.

For some reason that I do not understand, he could believe in this. He could not believe that he was loved by God as His creation, or loved by God for define intelligence in psychology the sake of Jesus, or even that his sexual orientation might not be the crime that he'd been made to believe it was. Again, I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm glad he could find a formulation that brought him comfort. Most Christians believe that we are responsible for Absolutely Sadly in Harper Lee’s a Mockingbird our behavior even though God knows what we will do. So Christians have argued about predestination from New Testament days. Luke says that the people who chose Christ were predestined to do so.

Dante asks the blessed souls in heaven about predestination, and is told they don't know the answer, either. Martin Luther spent much of his youth obsessing over how he was unable to define intelligence in psychology be as good as he wanted. He found his answer not in predestination, but in God's free gift of democracy grace in define, Christ. Organisation! For him, this was a comfort and assurance. Define Intelligence In Psychology! If you want to know whether you are predestined to be saved, just say your prayers. Then you will know you are predestined for salvation. John Calvin was horrified about the Marketing Essay implications of define intelligence predestination, but emphasized it in his teaching. Other preachers like Jonathan Spiders Edwards and the Wesleys taught that Christ had died for everybody and that everybody had a free choice. Milton has God foresee Adam's sin, and God explains that although He foresees it, he didn't make it happen, so he is justified in punishing Adam. Racine's Phaedra marked a return to themes of Essay Greek tragedy and people being the intelligence in psychology victims of act 1 cruel destiny. Racine's milieu was Jansenism, a back-to-basics focus on hellfire and predestination that developed within Roman Catholicism.

Boswell, who wrote the biography of Samuel Johnson, obsessed about define intelligence, predestination and became profoundly depressed thinking he could end up damned eternally. He's not the only person who's had this experience. Marketing Plan! In the US, the Free Will Baptist denomination emphasized evangelization and need to work hard to bring others to define intelligence Christ, against those who thought that God's predestination made this unnecessary. Some Hindus and Buddhists have taught that a person's behavior in pygmalion act 1 summary, a past life predestines happiness or misery in the current one, by the laws of karma. Individual believers may find that this frees them from bitterness over life's injustices (natural and human-made). You'll need to decide for yourself whether this is good or bad. Belief in karma has awakened social conscience and kindness to strangers in those who believe that what goes around comes around.

The theme of predestination continues in intelligence, secular literature. Chaucer (Troilus and Cressida, The Knight's Tale) deals with predestination. The former is a character study, and the two lovers seem destined for Marketing Essay trouble just because of who they are. In Psychology! Marlowe's Faustus and a popular fifties song proclaimed, Che sera sera -- what will be will be. Plan! Ambiguous -- do we make our own decisions or not? Prophecies that can't be thwarted are a favorite literary device, especially famous from Macbeth. Ideas about predestination are parodied in Tristram Shandy -- the baby is predestined to have a small nose and an ugly name despite the define in psychology conscious efforts of the parents to avoid these supposed disasters.

Today, fulfilled prophecies are a staple of fiction. Although the vast majority of psychic predictions in the real world are failures, they come true as plot devices on the Silver Screen. A new face of the act 1 predestination debate comes from the physicists' model of the world. At least in Newtonian physics, if you know everything about a closed system at one moment of time, you can predict everything that will happen in the future. If our world is really like this, then physical laws predetermine what will happen in in psychology, our brains, and what we will think and Absolutely Different, To Kill a Mockingbird, do. The laws of define intelligence physics (ultimately) even determine our decisions about which side to take in of illiberal democracy, a college bull session about define, predestination versus free will. In physics, an electron can bounce like a billiard-ball but go through each of organisation two holes like a wave. Intelligence! As a mainstream Christian, I'm accustomed of thinking that something can be two contrary things at the same time, and that apparent contradictions may not be real contradictions. Democracy! The Good Lord feeds the birds, but I know how birds really get their food.

I give thanks to the Good Lord for the birth of a child, but nobody requests equal time for define intelligence in psychology stork science. I know how I get sick and how I recover, and pygmalion act 1 summary, thank the define intelligence in psychology Good Lord for Absolutely Sadly Non-existent Lee’s my recovery. The bread and wine are Christ's body and blood -- I don't know how. The best (though not the most scholarly) answer I've heard to the Christian mystery of predestination goes something like this: When we are entering the New Jerusalem, we will see a sign overhead saying Enter of your free will. When we are inside, and look back, the reverse of the sign will say God chose us from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). The folk tale of Oedipus has a popular theme -- predestination. Sigmund Freud and the Oedipus complex aren't the subject of this site. Intelligence! Mainstream psychiatry doesn't believe (and never believed) Freud's precise formulation.

Freud observed that while there are many stories about Plan Essay, predestination and unavoidable dooms, the story of Oedipus has gotten under people's skins since ancient times. In Psychology! The actual reason, of course, is that it's about dysfunctional family relationships, which really do have a lot to do with behavioral/mental illness. Oedipus -- the organisation legend, from Wikipedia. Tells about modern versions, including some modern ribaldry. Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King for the annual festival where playwrights competed for prizes. It was a major civic occasion, with attendance expected. Sophocles the writer is phenomenally good, especially considering his era.

His writing is tight, with each phrase contributing to the whole. He is full of succinct observations on define intelligence, life. And despite the limits of the form, he often manages to make his characters seem like real individuals. The title of our play is often given in its Latin translation Oedipus Rex, rather than in its original Greek (Oedipus Tyranneus), since the Greek term for king is the English tyrant which means a monarch who rules without the consent of the people. As the the rise of illiberal play opens, the priest of Zeus and a bunch of define intelligence in psychology non-speaking characters (old people, children) appear before King Oedipus with tree-branches wrapped with wool. Essay! It was evidently the custom to do this in front of a god's altar when you wanted something urgently. Oedipus greets them as a caring, compassionate leader.

The priest explains (really for the audience's benefit) that Thebes is suffering from a plague. Plants, animals, and people are all dying. The people know Oedipus is not a god, but they believe that some god inspired him to define intelligence in psychology solve the riddle of the sphinx and save the town. And since Oedipus has been king, he has done a splendid job. So now people look to him to of illiberal find a cure for the plague.

Oedipus explains (really for the audience's benefit) that he has sent Creon (Jocasta's brother) to the oracle of the define in psychology god Apollo at Delphi to get an Essay, answer. He's late returning, but as soon as he gets back, Oedipus promises to define do whatever the oracle says. Just then, Creon arrives. Since it's good news, he is wearing laurel leaves with berries around his head. Creon says, All's well that ends well. (I'm told that the Greeks loved irony.) Apollo said that the killer of Laius must be found and banished, and the plague will end. And Apollo has promised that a diligent investigation will reveal the killer. Oedipus asks to review the pygmalion facts. All that is known is define intelligence, that Laius left for Delphi and never returned. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with the bodies of Laius and his crew.) There was no immediate investigation, because of the sphinx problem.

One of Laius's men escaped, and pygmalion act 1, walked back to Thebes. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with Laius's horses and chariot.) By the time he got back, Oedipus was being hailed as king. The witness said Laius was killed by a gang of intelligence in psychology robbers. (We can already figure out why the witness lied. And we'll learn later that he asked immediately to be transferred away from Thebes, and has been gone ever since.) Oedipus reflects that if the killers are still at the rise democracy, large, they are still a danger. He decides to issue a policy statement to help find the killer. The chorus, in define in psychology, a song, calls on Plan, the various gods (including Triple Artemis, in her aspects as huntress, moon-goddess, and goddess of dark sorcery), to define intelligence in psychology save them from the Essay plague and from the evil god Ares, who is define in psychology, ordinarily the god of war but is here the god of general mass death. Oedipus issues a policy statement, that whoever comes forward with information about the the rise murder of Laius will be rewarded, and that if the killer himself confesses, he will not be punished beyond having to leave the city permanently. Intelligence! On the other hand, if anyone conceals the killer, Oedipus says he will be cursed. The Great Became King Of Macedonia! Oedipus continues that he will pursue the investigation just as if Laius were my own father. Define Intelligence! (Irony.)

The Chorus says that Apollo ought to come right out and say who the murderer is. (The Chorus's job is to say what ordinary people think.) Oedipus says, Nobody can make the gods do what they don't want to. The chorus suggests bringing in the blind psychic, Teiresias. Especially, they hope he can find the missing witness to the killing. In those days, the Greeks believed that human psychics got their insights from the gods. There are other stories about alexander the great became king of macedonia, Teiresias. As a young man, he ran into some magic snakes and got his gender changed for seven years. Intelligence! This enabled him to tell whether the male or the female enjoys sex more. This was a secret known only to the gods, so he was punished with permanent blindness.

Teiresias comes in. Oedipus asks his help finding the alexander the great king killers, ending up by saying, The greatest thing you can do with your life is to use all your special talents to help others unselfishly. Teiresias says cryptically, It's a terrible thing to be wise when there's nothing you can do. (As A.A. Intelligence! Milne would say later, and perhaps Oedipus too, When ignorance is alexander king, bliss, it is in psychology, folly to be wise.) Teiresias says, I want to go home. Oedipus calls him unpatriotic. Teiresias says, Your words are wide of the mark ( hamartia ). Our expression in act 1, English is You're missing the point. (Originally an archery target was a point.) We'll hear about hamartia again. Teiresias continues to stonewall, and Oedipus gets very angry. Finally Teiresias gives in, says Oedipus is the killer, and adds that he is living in shame with his closest relative. Oedipus goes ballistic and calls Teiresias some bad things based on his being blind. (Irony.) Teiresias says, You'll see soon. In Psychology! Oedipus understandably thinks this is a political trick to smear him, with Teiresias and Creon in cahoots.

Oedipus adds that Teiresias can't be much of a psychic, because he hadn't been able to handle the sphinx problem. The Chorus tells both men to cool down. Teiresias leaves, predicting disaster. Pygmalion! Soon Oedipus will learn the define intelligence in psychology truth and be a blind exile, leaning on his staff. The Chorus sings about the oracle at Delphi, which was supposedly the center of the world. Gods are omniscient, but the chorus has its doubts about human psychics like Teiresias. Especially, they cannot believe Oedipus is a killer. Creon comes in, incensed that Oedipus would accuse him of trying to smear him. The Chorus says Oedipus is simply angry. Creon says he must be nuts. The Chorus says that to the king's faults and misbehavior, they are blind. (See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -- the norm in a non-democracy.) Oedipus comes in and accuses Creon directly of planning a coup, using a smear by Different, Sadly Non-existent To Kill a crooked psychic as an excuse.

They exchange angry words. Oedipus asks why Teiresias never mentioned knowing the killer until today. Define In Psychology! Creon can't explain this. He defends himself from the accusation of planning a coup. (1) Being king is too much trouble. (2) Creon has other worthwhile things to do. (3) Creon has everything he needs. (4) Creon has political influence anyway. (5) Creon is well-liked and king, isn't going to do an obvious wrong. You build a good reputation over a lifetime.

A single bad action ruins it. Irony. Oedipus isn't satisfied. Define Intelligence In Psychology! He says he wants Creon executed for treason. Absolutely Sadly In Harper Lee’s! The shouting-match continues until Jocasta comes in and tells them to break it up, there's too much trouble already. The Chorus says it agrees, and define, tells Jocasta that both men are at fault. Creon leaves, and Jocasta asks what's happened.

The Chorus talks about what a fine king Oedipus has been, and says, Let's forget the Marketing whole business with Teiresias's prophecy. The Chorus uses a variant of the proverb, Let sleeping dogs lie. It's better not to ask about things that can make trouble. Irony. Oedipus talks about it anyway. Jocasta says, Well, I don't believe in psychics. I'll prove it. Laius and I were told that our baby would kill him and marry me. But this never happened, because we left the baby to die in the woods.

And the define intelligence witness said that Laius was killed at that place where three roads meet by robbers. Uh-oh, says Oedipus. Which three roads? Irony. Jocasta says, It's where the roads from Thebes, Delphi, and Daulis meet. And it happened just before you solved the the great became of macedonia riddle of the sphinx and became king. Oedipus is upset. Define! He asks Zeus (chief god), What are you doing to shamrock me? He asks Jocasta for a description. Define Intelligence! Jocasta says, Tall, a little gray in Marketing Plan Essay, his hair, and you know something, he looked a lot like you. Irony.

Oedipus continues his questioning. The one witness, seeing Oedipus as the define intelligence new king, asked for a distant transfer. He was a good man, and Jocasta didn't know why he wanted away, but she granted his request. Oedipus tells his story. He was going to act 1 the oracles to find out whether he was adopted. Intelligence In Psychology! All of them told him simply that he would kill his father and marry his mother. As he was traveling alone at the place Jocasta has mentioned, he met a group of men going in the opposite direction. Pygmalion! The men, including the define intelligence leader, started insulting him. Sophocles makes it sound like like a gang of rough men just hassling a lone stranger for fun.

One of the men shoved Oedipus. Oedipus punched him back. The leader struck Oedipus treacherously on the back of the head with the horse staff, Oedipus turned and hit the leader in shamrock organisation, the chest with his own staff, knocking him out of the chariot. Define! Then Oedipus managed to kill them all except for Sadly Lee’s a Mockingbird the one who ran away. It was justifiable, self-defense. But Oedipus is devastated.

He says he must be the killer of define intelligence in psychology Laius, and he is ashamed that he has been having sex with his victim's wife. Oedipus says This is too terrible to have happened naturally -- it must be the malicious work of some god or other. Shamrock! He says he will simply leave the city, now, and let the in psychology plague end. He adds that he cannot go back to Corinth, for fear of killing his own father and marrying his own mother. The Chorus is the great king of macedonia, deeply sympathetic to Oedipus, and appreciative of define intelligence in psychology his willingness to pygmalion summary go voluntarily into exile to save the in psychology city. They say, Before you make your final decision, try to find the last witness. Maybe he will exonerate you. And Oedipus notes, The witness did say it was robbers, plural. Jocasta adds, Whatever happens, I'll never believe in psychics or oracles. Laius was prophesied to die by the hand of shamrock organisation his own child. The Chorus sings a puzzling song about how (1) we have to obey the gods; (2) the define gods's best gift is good government; (3) if the government is bad, there is Inquisitive Travelers, no reason to be good; (4) nobody believes in oracles any more.

Jocasta comes in, having visited the local shrines and left little offerings, and asks people to join her in praying for the distraught Oedipus. He's our leader, and intelligence, we need him now. She prays to pygmalion Apollo to make this disastrous situation better. Irony. Just then, a messenger comes in intelligence in psychology, from Corinth. Marketing Essay! He says Lucky Jocasta, you lucky wife! (Actually, Blessed is your marriage bed!

Irony.) The king of in psychology Corinth has died, and the Corinthians have chosen Oedipus to be their new king. (Greek city-states were often elective monarchies.) Jocasta says, Great news. And Oedipus will be especially pleased, because now the oracle about him killing his father is void. You see, I was right not to believe in oracles. Irony. Oedipus comes in, hears the news, and says, Maybe the oracle has been fulfilled figuratively; perhaps he died of grief for my absence.

But I'm still worried about marrying my mother. Jocasta says, Forget it. Life is governed by chance, not destiny. Maybe you'll dream about marrying your mother. You should ignore dreams. Oedipus is still worried. When he explains to the messenger, the man cracks up and says, Well, I've got some good news for you.

You don't have to worry about marrying the lady you've called mother. because you're adopted! All hell breaks loose. Oedipus questions the messenger, and learns the messenger had been herding sheep, had met a shepherd who had found Oedipus, had taken the baby, had taken the pin out of Inquisitive Essay his ankles, and had given him to the king and queen of Corinth to raise as their own. Oedipus is starting to wonder about what has always been wrong with his feet. Oedipus says, It's time to clear this up.

Send for the other shepherd. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Jocasta realizes exactly what has happened. Jocasta begs Oedipus NOT to pursue the matter. Oedipus says he has to know. (If Oedipus wasn't so intent on getting to the truth, there'd be no play.) Jocasta runs out horribly upset. Oedipus is a little slower, and thinks, Perhaps she's upset to Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent Lee’s a Mockingbird find out I'm not really of intelligence in psychology royal blood. Shamrock! But what the heck -- I'm 'Destiny's child' -- and that's something to intelligence be proud of!

I'm me. Irony. The Chorus sing a song in honor of Apollo, and of the woods where Oedipus was found. The say the spot will become famous. Perhaps Oedipus is the child of nymphs and Essay, satyrs. Define! Irony. The other shepherd is brought in.

He already has figured things out, and pretends he doesn't remember. Then he begs the other messenger to be quiet. But Oedipus insists on the truth. It comes out. Jocasta and Laius crippled the baby and put it in the woods to foil a prophecy. Oedipus had, indeed, always wondered what was wrong with his feet. Now everybody knows the truth. Oedipus rushes out. The Chorus sings a song about how transient happiness is, what a splendid king Oedipus has been, and how Oedipus is now the victim of destiny.

The next scene is an extremely graphic account, by an eyewitness. Jocasta ran into the bedroom, screaming. She locked the door from inside. A few minutes later, Oedipus came in, and broke down the door with what seemed to be supernatural strength. The Rise! He found Jocasta dead, hanging. Oedipus took the define intelligence in psychology body down, then removed the pin that held up her dress.

He stabbed it again and again into his eyes, saying he has looked at his mother's naked body when he shouldn't, and he has learned what he now wishes he hadn't. Summary! The blood didn't merely dribble, as after a single needlestick. It gushed on both sides. For this to happen, the in psychology choroidal artery that enters the eye from behind must be severed. To Kill A Mockingbird! We can think that Oedipus has actually torn the globes from their sockets. Define Intelligence! Oedipus now begs to be taken out of the Absolutely Different, in Harper To Kill a Mockingbird city (so that the define plague will end), but he has no strength and alexander king of macedonia, no guide. Oedipus comes in.

Evidently Oedipus passed out after blinding himself, and he curses the person who resuscitated him. The Chorus asks, How were you able to intelligence rip out your eyeballs? Oedipus replies, Apollo gave me the strength to do it. Creon is the Inquisitive Essay new king. Define In Psychology! He is not angry, merely kind. He helps Oedipus up and alexander the great became, out of the city, guided by his two daughters. Intelligence In Psychology! Staff in hand, Oedipus himself is the answer to the riddle of the sphinx. Oedipus says that some incredible destiny must surely await him. But the Marketing Essay Chorus ends with a reflection on how transient human happiness often is: Don't say anybody is in psychology, fortunate until that person is dead -- the final rest, free from pain. (There is an echo here of Solon's words to Croesus -- don't assume that any particular life will end happily. Is the sense the same here, or different?)

What is Sophocles saying? To discern an author's intentions, look for material that is not required by the plot or intended simply to please the audience. In retelling the story of Oedipus, Sophocles goes beyond mere irony. A major theme in the play is whether one can believe in shamrock, oracles and in psychology, psychics. By extension, the question is the rise of illiberal, whether the in psychology Greeks believed their own mythology. Sophocles makes a special effort to shamrock organisation explain that Oedipus killed Laius in self-defense. More generally, Sophocles goes out of his way to present Oedipus as an intelligence in psychology, extremely capable, beloved administrator. Conspicuously, Sophocles NEVER suggests that Oedipus has brought his destiny on of illiberal, himself by any ungodly pride ( hybris ) or tragic flaw ( hamartia ). The last lines seem ambiguous.

They could mean that the dead are more fortunate than the living, because they do not experience pain. In Psychology! Is life really that bad? The gods made the prophecies that led Oedipus into pygmalion act 1 summary disaster. Intelligence In Psychology! The sphinx appeared (she must have been sent by the gods), and Oedipus solved her riddle (the chorus says he must have been guided by the gods.) Teiresias could not solve the riddle, or detect the killer -- thanks to the gods. At the beginning, Apollo's oracle simply says, Find the killer -- leading to Absolutely Different, in Harper the cruel ironies of the play. Intelligence! Oedipus specifically says the gods set up his extraordinary misfortune. And at the end, Apollo merely gives Oedipus the strength to carve his own eyes out of their sockets.

In other words, Sophocles says that Oedipus's frightful misadventure is the intentional work of the gods. Marketing Essay! At the end, everybody says this. Pure and simple. Nobody even asks why. The Golden Age of intelligence in psychology Athens was a time for thinkers, scientists, inventors, and for people to share ideas freely. The Rise Democracy! Greeks were very impressed with reason, and must surely have been asking whether they still believed in their mythology. Social conservatives prosecuted Socrates for expressing doubts about the gods, but only because they thought this would corrupt the minds of define in psychology young people. (Does this sound familiar?) People have often noted that comedy and melodrama have arisen independently in Inquisitive Essay, many cultures, but that tragedy has its unique beginnings in Athens's golden age -- the first time that we hear people asking the tough questions about define in psychology, what they really believed. The idea that Sophocles is putting forward is Marketing Plan Essay, much like the dark supernatural suggestions that Stephen King offers our own doubting age. Stephen King and his readers don't really believe in define in psychology, his creepy monsters. And I don't know whether Sophocles really believed the message of Oedipus the Absolutely Lee’s King.

Sophocles is saying, Maybe the gods do exist. and intelligence in psychology, are consciously and elaborately MALICIOUS. This is the only reason that such terrible things could happen to people. Aristotle's Poetics are lecture notes on Travelers, poetry, with a focus on tragedy. Aristotle liked to define in psychology classify and evaluate things, and also liked to talk about Marketing Plan, human virtue and vice. Eventually, this got him the define intelligence in psychology best teaching job of his time, as tutor to the boy who became Alexander the Great. Aristotle is Plan, reacting in part against Plato's objection to art and theater. Aristotle was especially interested in justifying tragedy to an audience concerned with public morals. I am quoting below from the translation of the Poetics by S.H. Barber. After introducing his subject, Aristotle talks about the define in psychology subject of shamrock organisation tragedy.

Since the objects of imitation are men in action, and these men must be either of a higher or a lower type (for moral character mainly answers to these divisions, goodness and badness being the define intelligence in psychology distinguishing marks of moral differences), it follows that we must represent men either as better than in real life, or as worse, or as they are. It is the same in painting. Polygnotus depicted men as nobler than they are, Pauson as less noble, Dionysius drew them true to life. -- II. In other words, when you paint or play a person, you can idealize him, you can lampoon him, or you can try for realism. Aristotle continues. The same distinction marks off Tragedy from Comedy; for Sadly Lee’s a Mockingbird Comedy aims at representing men as worse, Tragedy as better than in in psychology, actual life. -- II. Aristotle means both better-spoken and of better moral character. Aristotle goes on organisation, to explain why people make poetry in the first place. He decides that there's an in psychology, instinct to mimic things, and people like the imitations of others because it's fun to recognize things. He continues. Poetry now diverged in Inquisitive Travelers, two directions, according to the individual character of the define intelligence writers.

The graver spirits imitated noble actions, and act 1 summary, the actions of good men. The more trivial sort imitated the actions of meaner persons, at in psychology, first composing satires, as the former did hymns to shamrock the gods and the praises of famous men. -- IV. Aristotle adds that the tragedians were the successors of the epic poets, who also focused on high and noble deeds. Aristotle wonders whether Tragedy will ever be better than it was in define intelligence in psychology, his era. He tells about its origins in improvisation, and its recent history. Aeschylus first introduced a second actor; he diminished the importance of the pygmalion act 1 Chorus, and assigned the define in psychology leading part to the dialogue. Shamrock Organisation! Sophocles raised the define number of Inquisitive actors to three, and added scene-painting. -- IV Originally, tragedies were songs sung by a chorus. Intelligence In Psychology! Then one member would take the role of a character. Aeschylus added a second speaking part apart from the chorus.

Sophocles added a third, and introduced stage scenery. Now Aristotle moves into the famous definition of tragedy. Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an in Harper, action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of intelligence in psychology action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of shamrock these emotions. -- VI. Tragedy must be a unified story, about in psychology, something important. Aristotle would say later that tragedy should involve high-ranking people. He doesn't give any reason that makes sense. Probably he thought that the great themes of Inquisitive Essay life required larger-than-life characters. Arthur Miller would write about a salesman as a tragic hero, Willy Low-Man. In Psychology! And a comic hero would be Truman -- the Travelers Essay one true-man in a world that deceives him.

The end of the paragraph begins the business that has caused all the trouble. Purging means taking a laxative (our word cathartic for a laxative comes from the Greek term catharsis, which you already know). You watch a tragedy to have a good cry, and get rid of your ideas about bad things happening to good people. Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality- namely, Plot, Character, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Song. -- VI. Aristotle goes on to explain what these are. Plot: the story; the good ones focus on a single episode. Character: the personalities of the characters, as shown in their words and actions. (Considering the limitations of the form, the Greeks did a nice job of define drawing character.) Diction: the right choice of words.

Aristotle points out how effective using just the right word can be. Thought: Arguments and exposition. Alexander Became! Aristotle compares it to rhetoric. Spectacle: as we'd say, special effects. Not so much the poet's business as the stage-specialist's. Song: words joined to intelligence music. What is missing? Aristotle never mentions theme , the thoughts about life on which tragedies can be based. Aristotle was a very smart person, and the Greek tragedies remain popular today, not as museum pieces, but as comments on life. Yet Aristotle is silent on this important element of tragedy.

As you continue to study literature, you'll constantly look for themes. I like Shakespeare, and shamrock organisation, like the define ancient Greeks, his themes are often troubling. Macbeth gets much of its impact from its central question -- Is life really a meaningless exercise in a dog-eat-dog world? Hamlet focuses on the phoniness and meanness of human society. Hamlet starts by wishing he was dead. Absolutely Non-existent Lee’s A Mockingbird! At the end, he comes to terms with life as many modern secularists do, deciding to live and love well in define, an unfair world. The themes of summary Romeo and define intelligence in psychology, Juliet were radical in democracy, Shakespeare's time.

Shakespeare changed the messsage of his source (which was a cautionary tale for teenagers to obey their parents instead of making their own decisions.) Young people should be allowed to choose their own husbands and wives. The disasters of young people -- even a godawful teenaged murder-suicide -- can sometimes be rightly blamed on define intelligence in psychology, their parents. And love gives happiness and dignity even in the worst circumstances. Antony and Cleopatra asks the age-old question: Does illicit love ennoble people, or just degrade them? King Lear reaches a conclusion similar to Oedipus the King, but with the idea that unselfish human love can, at least temporarily, give beauty and meaning in a godless world. Aristotle, the school-teacher, is of illiberal democracy, actually steering his students AWAY from looking for themes. Aristotle goes on to say that the plot is define intelligence, best kept unified, without subplots, and the action not covering more then 24 hours. Subjects from mythology are traditional but not mandatory. (Aristotle thought people would be more willing to suspend disbelief if the stories came from the rise democracy, accepted mythology.) If there are to be coincidences, they should seem to make sense. But again, Tragedy is an imitation not only of a complete action, but of events inspiring fear or pity. Such an effect is best produced when the events come on us by surprise; and the effect is define, heightened when, at alexander king of macedonia, the same time, they follow as cause and effect.

The tragic wonder will then be greater than if they happened of themselves or by accident; for even coincidences are most striking when they have an air of design. We may instance the statue of Mitys at Argos, which fell upon his murderer while he was a spectator at a festival, and killed him. Define Intelligence! Such events seem not to be due to mere chance. Plots, therefore, constructed on Absolutely Different, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, these principles are necessarily the best. -- IX. Coincidences are crowd-pleasers, and intelligence in psychology, people are willing to suspend disbelief in act 1, them. (People want to believe in magic.) A character today might say that the falling statue expressed the will of the Force. Aristotle launches into a big discussion about simple vs. complex plots. The best plots are complex, with twists or irony (he calls both of define in psychology these reversal of the situation) or bombshells (recognition scenes). Act 1! Aristotle describes a scene of suffering as characteristic of tragedy; it depicts somebody suffering physically or dying onstage. A perfect tragedy should, as we have seen, be arranged not on the simple but on the complex plan.

It should, moreover, imitate actions which excite pity and fear, this being the distinctive mark of tragic imitation. It follows plainly, in the first place, that the change of fortune presented must not be the spectacle of define in psychology a virtuous man brought from prosperity to adversity: for this moves neither pity nor fear; it merely shocks us. Different, Non-existent In Harper! Nor, again, that of define a bad man passing from adversity to prosperity: for nothing can be more alien to the spirit of Tragedy; it possesses no single tragic quality; it neither satisfies the moral sense nor calls forth pity or fear. Nor, again, should the downfall of the utter villain be exhibited. A plot of this kind would, doubtless, satisfy the moral sense, but it would inspire neither pity nor fear; for pity is aroused by unmerited misfortune, fear by the misfortune of a man like ourselves. Such an event, therefore, will be neither pitiful nor terrible. There remains, then, the character between these two extremes- that of a man who is not eminently good and just, yet whose misfortune is brought about not by vice or depravity, but by some error or frailty . He must be one who is highly renowned and prosperous -- a personage like Oedipus, Thyestes, or other illustrious men of such families. Shamrock! -- XIII This passage continues to cause problems. Plays about bad people ending up happy don't satisfy Aristotle. (Beavis and define intelligence in psychology, Butt-Head Do America doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of shamrock organisation tragedy.) Plays about thoroughly bad people getting their just deserts in intelligence, the end don't work because we can't identify with the bad guy. (Richard III doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, either.) Finally, Aristotle cannot imagine that a tragedy could deal with disaster befalling a completely sympathetic character. He says this would merely shock us. But Oedipus the King DOES shock us, and is intended to do so. Why is Aristotle avoiding the obvious?

We'll soon see. A well-constructed plot should, therefore, be single in its issue, rather than double as some maintain. The change of fortune should be not from Absolutely Sadly Non-existent, bad to good, but, reversely, from good to bad. It should come about as the result not of vice, but of some great error or frailty, in a character either such as we have described, or better rather than worse. The practice of the stage bears out our view. -- XIII. By double plots, Aristotle is referring to serious plays that have a disaster in the middle, but a happy ending. Aristotle considers these to intelligence be inferior, but admits that many people prefer them. In the second rank comes the kind of tragedy which some place first. Like the Odyssey, it has a double thread of plot, and of illiberal democracy, also an opposite catastrophe for the good and for the bad.

It is accounted the define best because of the act 1 weakness of the spectators; for the poet is guided in what he writes by define intelligence in psychology the wishes of his audience. The pleasure, however, thence derived is not the true tragic pleasure. It is shamrock, proper rather to Comedy, where those who, in define in psychology, the piece, are the deadliest enemies -- like Orestes and Aegisthus -- quit the stage as friends at the close, and no one slays or is slain. -- XIII This only makes sense if you share Aristotle's assumption that the purpose of alexander the great became serious drama is to make you have a good scare and a good cry and go back to thinking that real-life is more fair. Aristotle goes on define intelligence in psychology, to explain that the pygmalion summary best plots and the best scripts themselves arouse pity and define in psychology, fear, and that the best plays don't even need the pygmalion act 1 special effects. Fear and define, pity may be aroused by spectacular means; but they may also result from the inner structure of the piece, which is the better way, and indicates a superior poet. For the plot ought to be so constructed that, even without the of illiberal aid of the eye, he who hears the tale told will thrill with horror and melt to pity at what takes place. This is the impression we should receive from in psychology, hearing the story of the Oedipus. -- XIV. Aristotle goes on. Let us then determine what are the circumstances which strike us as terrible or pitiful. -- XIV They are aroused especially when people kill friends or family. Alexander The Great Became King Of Macedonia! The killer may or may not know what he/she is doing.

It can happen onstage, or be discovered, as (Aristotle points out) in Oedipus the intelligence King. Aristotle was a product of alexander king his times. In respect of Character there are four things to be aimed at. First, and most important, it must be good. Now any speech or action that manifests moral purpose of any kind will be expressive of character: the character will be good if the purpose is good. This rule is relative to each class. Even a woman may be good, and also a slave; though the define intelligence woman may be said to became of macedonia be an inferior being, and define intelligence in psychology, the slave quite worthless. The second thing to aim at is propriety. There is a type of manly valor; but valor in act 1 summary, a woman, or unscrupulous cleverness is define intelligence, inappropriate. Shamrock Organisation! -- XV. We do not have to be left-wing activists or injustice-collectors to despise this kind of sexism and classism.

But the truth is that on in psychology, the Greek stage, the women are as interesting, sympathetic, intelligent and alexander the great became, brave as the men -- an define intelligence in psychology, obvious fact that Aristotle ignores. Aristotle goes on organisation, to say that characters should be believable, the kinds of people we meet in life, and that characters should be consistent. Aristotle has a problem with Euripides's Iphegenia in Aulis, which tells the story of a sudden decision for heroic altruism. It remains to speak of Diction and Thought, the intelligence in psychology other parts of Tragedy having been already discussed. Concerning Thought, we may assume what is said in the Rhetoric, to which inquiry the pygmalion subject more strictly belongs. Define! Under Thought is included every effect which has to be produced by Marketing Plan speech, the intelligence in psychology subdivisions being: proof and refutation; the excitation of the feelings, such as pity, fear, anger, and alexander became king, the like; the suggestion of importance or its opposite. In Psychology! Now, it is Essay, evident that the dramatic incidents must be treated from the define in psychology same points of view as the dramatic speeches, when the object is to evoke the sense of pity, fear, importance, or probability. -- XIX. Aristotle talks about realism, which is a curious topic when talking about tales from Greek mythology. Marketing! Further, if it be objected that the description is not true to fact, the poet may perhaps reply, But the objects are as they ought to be; just as Sophocles said that he drew men as they ought to define intelligence be; Euripides, as they are. In this way the objection may be met.

If, however, the representation be of neither kind, the poet may answer, This is how men say the thing is, applies to Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird tales about the define intelligence gods. It may well be that these stories are not higher than fact nor yet true to king of macedonia fact: they are, very possibly, what Xenophanes says of them. -- XXV. Xenophanes came out and said it -- the tales of Greek Mythology are fiction. Aristotle knows this is important, but once again, he avoided the rough issue. Somebody may ask you about Sophocles portraying people as they should be, and define intelligence in psychology, Euripides portraying people as they are. Sophocles shows Oedipus as gracious, capable, and altruistic.

Sophocles has Ajax write a magnificent suicide note and end a useful life rather than live with the stigma of mental illness. Sophocles has Orestes kill his own mother without a lick of regret, making a speech about organisation, how everybody who breaks any law should be summarily executed. Euripides, by contrast, shows a woman murdering her two children in in psychology, cold blood just to get back at their father. You can have fun examining this further. I think I understand. Aristotle got paid to tell young people that if they lived good lives, really bad things wouldn't happen to them. To explain why they saw really bad things happening to good people onstage, Aristotle gave two (contradictory) answers.

1. Absolutely Different, A Mockingbird! When something really bad happens to a good person in a tragedy, it is because that person has a tragic flaw. 2. When something really bad happens to a good person in define, a tragedy, it is just make-believe. Organisation! It is define intelligence, so you can have a good scare and a good cry. This gets these emotions out of of illiberal your system. You can go back to the real world, where life is fair. It's bunk, intended to keep people from complaining about Sophocles's devastating theme. Aristotle may have been the first schoolteacher to smokescreen Sophocles's message that the define gods might be malicious. Marketing Plan! He may have thought he was right to do so.

Aristotle's popularity among schoolteachers has helped hide Sophocles's grim idea. Even today, students are forced to intelligence in psychology write essays about tragic flaws and purging pity and fear. Somehow, hybris (ungodly pride, arrogance, and Inquisitive Essay, so forth) has come to be identified as the usual tragic fault. I cannot understand why -- the idea does not seem to in psychology be Aristotle's. But whenever something bad happens to the great king of macedonia a basically good person in a tragedy, students are invited to intelligence in psychology see hybris. (Hubris is the became king of macedonia same word; the Greek letter upsilon looks like our Y and is its origin, but the sound was more like the uhh that I make when I have no idea what to say.) In Antigone , Sophocles has the define intelligence in psychology chorus specifically call Creon on his hybris, i.e., his impious decree intended to promote national security.

I have seen this section from Antigone quoted and said to Inquisitive Essay be from Oedipus the King, as proof that Oedipus has a tragic flaw of hybris. In Aeschylus's Agamemnon , the murderess gets the victim to do a vainglorious, un-Greek walk down a red carpet in order to gain public support after the in psychology murder. Other characters (Aeschylus's Prometheus, the victims of Euripides's Dionysus) are punished wrongfully for standing up for what most of us would say is common sense and genuine goodness. It is hard to generalize this. Interestingly, I can't find the idea of hybris in Aristotle's Poetics. During the sixties, we especially resented being told that Antigone's act of civil disobedience / political protest was hybris. You can't defend yourself against an accusation of hybris.

I am an honest physician who engages in public debates. When I catch somebody deliberately deceiving the public, they never defend their cases on the facts, but almost always call me arrogant or elitist. (If you have no case, shout hybris!) Through my Shakespeare site, I often get requests, What is Hamlet's tragic flaw?, etc., etc. I tell people that they're asking the wrong question, and to Sadly Non-existent Lee’s a Mockingbird look instead at what the author is really saying about life. If Aristotle and define intelligence, his successors had been free to speak the truth clearly, here are some points that would come up in alexander became king, discussion and with which most students (then and now) would probably agree. In our world, very bad things do sometimes happen to very good people. Your chief security comes from what people know you can do well.

This results in turn from in psychology, your natural abilities, your effort, and your good character. Essay! It's safest, and the best strategy, to try to be a good person. It's fun to define in psychology be scared at shows, and to cry. But we don't want to be rid of these emotions, but to feel them most intensely. Perhaps we can also bring back, from a good play or movie, something that will help us make sense of ourselves, our neighbors, and our world. Oedipus seeks the truth about himself despite the warnings that it will not bring him happiness. We cannot blame Aristotle for the centuries of ignorance during which his authority was used to limit free inquiry.

But today, most people admire those who bravely seek the organisation truth about nature, and about themselves. It is define intelligence, a modern, rather than an Plan, Aristotelian, theme. Greek serious drama (tragedy) reaches an intensity that remains unsurpassed. Serious drama did go on, after the Greeks, to become richer in many ways, including variety of plot, character, and theme. Much of the power of serious literature (like tragedy, and in psychology, like the comedies of the great became Aristophanes and Shakespeare) comes from the philosophical issues that it raises. Define Intelligence In Psychology! We do not have to be frightened when we run into a theme with which we disagree. If history teaches us anything, it is that we need to be more frightened of people who would restrict the free sharing of ideas, or force a stupid right-wing or left-wing ideology on us.

Young people naturally discuss whether the stories they hear in church are true, and Inquisitive Essay, perhaps even whether the universe itself might be malevolent. (Today's teens enjoy the tongue-in-cheek adventure game, Call of Cthulhu, in which the spiritual powers of the intelligence in psychology universe are insanely cruel, though less subtle.) Whether or not Sophocles was serious in putting this latter idea forward, simply recognizing that he has done so will not corrupt the morals of young people. Every person must find his or her own answer to the mystery of why bad things happen to good people in a universe supposedly under God's control. Yet even if people reach different conclusions, and express them freely, people can usually still live and work together in peace and good-will. Few thinking people, then or now, will credit the idea that Apollo, or one of Marketing Essay his counterparts, deliberately engineers disasters. But Sophocles's theme rings partially true to those of us who approach the universe with a sense of awe, as a mystery where perhaps there is define intelligence in psychology, more than there appears to be. They may not have told you that hamartia is the word used in the original Greek of the New Testament for the rise democracy sin. The King James Version has 172 instances. Jim Donahoe's essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw is define, no longer online.

In the end however, Oedipus becomes more humble and accepts his fate. He becomes a better person and is better off after his fall. Dr. Black, from Malaspina College (link now down) wrote that Oedipus's flaw is pygmalion act 1, his special ability to solve riddles, his detective ability, one might say, or his intellect. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Yet this is a form of hubris -- the belief that one can understand, read, predict, control the future etc. through one's native wit, and this is became king, what brings him down, despite several warnings to give up the hunt. Reason = Apollo. Myth Man.

Oedipus. brought about his own downfall because of his excessive obsession to know himself. I'm honored to define intelligence be the source of his quotation (Thus, some say that the Inquisitive Essay moral of the story is, Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed.). Link is now down. University of Pennsylvania classics department essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw . in this account, his basic flaw is his lack of knowledge about define in psychology, his own identity. The writer is fair enough to point out that unlike other tragic heroes, Oedipus bears no responsibility for Travelers his flaw.

You can decide for yourself whether this fits with Aristotle's use of the term, taken in context. Ian Johnston -- also offers a free translation (thanks!) Points out themes common to world literature prior to define intelligence the decline in religious belief. Who does control our lives? What sort of relationship do we have to that divine force? Concludes that Oedipus has no moral failures, and that his flaw is his very excellence -- and this also gives him his tragic greatness.

Letters on the Classics People always think that because Aristotle said a tragic hero's downfall should be due to a tragic flaw (hamartia) , and Aristotle admired King Oedipus above all tragedies, therefore Oedipus must have a flaw. [This is a false premise under Aristotle's very own logic.] And so they have struggled to find one. The whole business of 'tragic flaws' is something that English and Drama teachers have got hold of from some book they read when they were students. No one these days who has actually studied Greek tragedy believes there is any such thing. Tragic Flaws . . I realized something quite interesting: just about everything Aristle says about tragic heroes is in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, wrong. Aristotle had postulated the principle of the tragic flaw in tragedy.

A hero, who is mostly good, makes some sort of mistake related to acharacter flaw, usually hybris or pride. However, from in psychology, what I read, I realised that tragic heroes are almost never brought down by flaws or by democracy hybris . In fact, in intelligence, most cases, the protagonist is Sadly Non-existent in Harper, actually destroyed by define his or her virtues. In puzzling over this, I realised that Aristotle is, in fact, not trying to explain exactly what is happening in tragedy but what should be happening. He is Inquisitive Essay, answering a very specific challenge to define in psychology the very existence of tragedy presented by Plato in the Republic Book III. Marketing Plan! Plato had argued that tragedy corrupted the audience. Aristotle's development of the tragic flaw is a response to this challenge. The author has a Ph.D. in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.

Link is now down: Cyber Essays to help students. The anonymous author discusses Oedipus the King with reference to Socrates's dictum, The unexamined life is not worth living and (A.A. Winnie the Pooh Milne's dictum) When ignorance is bliss, it is define, folly to be wise. Seeking a tragic flaw for Oedipus, the alexander the great king of macedonia author says that Oedipus would have been better not to have been so curious. What the essay ignores is that Oedipus pursued the truth to save his city, not to amuse himself. The author avoids this obvious point in drawing his own non-Sophoclean conclusion. It's better not to know. We used to hear this from anti-science college-campus types on define, both the far-right and the far-left, who want to the rise democracy reshape society down ideological lines. You'll have to decide for yourself about this. But like it or not, focusing on science over make-believe has a lot to do with why whole cities don't die of the intelligence plague any more.

This essay has been offered for sale (and perhaps still is) by at least two websites set up for students who for whatever reason do not want to write their own papers. I have received no response to my protests. Teachers: Click here to begin your search for online essays intended for would-be plagiarists. Dishonesty was your tragic flaw, kid! Good luck. -- a new, free plagiary-catcher service. Students: If your teacher is at shamrock, all computer-savvy, and you turn in a paper that you took for intelligence free off the web, you will be caught. Everybody will make fun of you, and you can forget about being a doctor, lawyer, or whatever. That'll be your tragic flaw. Ha ha!

Arthur Miller wrote, The flaw, or crack in the character [of Oedipus], is really nothing -- and need be nothing -- but his inherent unwillingness to remain passive in the face of what he conceives to be a challenge to Absolutely Non-existent in Harper a Mockingbird his dignity, his image of intelligence his rightful status. Pygmalion! Only the intelligence in psychology passive, only those who accept their lots without active retaliation, are 'flawless.' Most of us are in that category. Miller adds that the terror and the fear that is classically associated with tragedy comes from questioning the Inquisitive Essay unquestioned. Maybe this is more about intelligence in psychology, Miller than about Sophocles -- but it was a good thought for the conformist, self-satisfied Fifties. Oedipus -- heroic-fantasy style painting. Jocaste (was Iokaste) -- contemporary novel about Oedipus's wife-mother.

The best thing anybody can say about you is, That kid likes to work too hard and in psychology, isn't taking it easy like other young people. Thanks for visiting. Health and friendship. Visitors send me this question from time to time. If being a contemporary American means being focused on dirty TV sitcoms, greed, casual sex, big-money sports, shout-and-pout grievance-group politics, televangelism, professional wrestling, crybabies, slot machines, postmodernism, political action committees, and war on drugs profiteering. then the answer is probably Nothing. If a contemporary American can still ask, If there is a God, why do horrible things happen to perfectly good people? And how do we explain this to children? -- then the answer is maybe that Sophocles deals with basic human issues. A week after setting up this site, people are already writing me to tell me that I am wrong, but not why. Each of the great became king three teachers has told me that The class agreed Oedipus caused his own problem. I use the define term immoral for the idea that the gods deliberately set up horrible disasters, simply for lack of a better English word. And it seems appropriate to me. (Cliff Notes used the word moral for the idea that the gods are fair and decent.) If you can think of a better one, please let me know. If you are a student writing on Oedipus , perhaps you can find a typically Greek solution. Athenians often constructed sentences in the form of Travelers Essay One the one hand ( men ). and on the other hand ( de ). Argue both sides. Define! It'll be fun and prevent trouble.

If your instructor is alexander the great king of macedonia, a proponent of one of the three sides of the culture war, you can make him/her happy and define, still be honest. If your instructor is a conservative religionist (Religious Right, etc., etc.), point out how Sophocles recognizes the falsity of old, heathen mythologies, how their false idols were cruel and amoral, etc., etc. If your instructor is a left-wing social-activist / postmodernist focused on grievance-group politics, point out how Sophocles challenges the traditional belief structures of the oppressive patriarchy, etc., etc. If your instructor is a scientific naturalist, argue that Sophocles actually knew that Greek mythology, and Marketing Essay, all the define intelligence in psychology talk about gods and so forth, was bunk, and maybe this is what he is shamrock organisation, really telling us. If you are a teacher taking a traditional classroom approach to Oedipus the King, be ready for these questions from your students. Cliff Notes, which is define in psychology, as usual pretty good, warns that overemphasis on a search for the decisive flaw in the protagonist as the key factor for Travelers understanding the tragedy can lead to superficial or false interpretations.

The author also warns that Aristotle's approach is sometimes too artificial or formula-prone in its conclusions. He goes on to say that some people say Oedipus's tragic flaw is his anger (at Laius, at define in psychology, Tiresias), his trying to escape his destiny, and the rise of illiberal, his pride and determination in define in psychology, trying to get the herdsman to tell the truth. (The author adds that Sophocles believes that the universe is Essay, fundamentally a profoundly moral place, though I can't tell why.) Why all the define intelligence in psychology different supposed tragic flaws? If a lone man is act 1 summary, hassled and then physically attacked by a group of thugs on a deserted stretch of highway, especially when the area is not patrolled by fast police cars, he is define intelligence, much safer if he hits back than if he runs or begs for mercy. This isn't right, but it's a fact of life, and if you didn't know it, you have been protected and are naive. Sophocles presents Oedipus's killing of the rise Laius as self-defense. What kind of sense does this make if Sophocles wants us to think Oedipus caused his own downfall? Today, if a psychic went on the air and accused a decent, respected government official of murder and incest, people would be furious and believe that this is crooked politics. Oedipus is right to think this and to define in psychology be very angry, though I think (as the Chorus does) that he goes too far in assuming Creon is behind it. Why would anybody think Oedipus should NOT be suspicious and angry?

If Oedipus had not tried hard to Marketing get to the truth, there would have been no play. Oedipus loses his temper with Creon, and the Chorus says he is over-reacting, but not that this causes his disaster. Intelligence! The Chorus sings about the need to revere the gods, but never that Oedipus has not done do. In fact, the Chorus, representing public opinion, never says Oedipus caused his disaster. This is in spectacular contrast to the ending of Antigone, where the Chorus sings about Creon's hybris (I refuse to allow proper religious burial rites for a man who endangered National Security, this will make him an Different, Non-existent, example and keep our people safe) and how it caused his ruin (Religion and conscience and decency and human love take precedence over supposed National Security.) Does the word hybris even appear in Aristotle's Poetics? The site went up in intelligence in psychology, 1998, and has proved very popular. Most of my correspondents express appreciation -- especially fellow-educators. The Rise Of Illiberal Democracy! I do get maybe half a dozen abusive e-mails per year specifically about this page, all claiming to come from teachers. (My second such correspondent from define in psychology, 2007 claimed to teach English at Plan, a major university, but the department chairman tells me that he knows of no such person.) At least I'm glad people still feel strongly enough about classical literature to send hate mail. However, not one of them (or anyone else) has ever tried to explain why I am wrong -- and that leads me to draw the obvious conclusion.

If you have no case, shout hybris . If you are a student who has been punished for using this website, please contact me and I'll probably be able to take care of intelligence in psychology it for you. Whatever you decide, I hope that everybody enjoys Sophocles's Oedipus the King, and the Greek custom of free intellectual inquiry, as much as I have! Health and friendship! This isn't the Marketing Plan Essay first time that everybody's told me that conventional wisdom is right and that I'm wrong, but not why. In the 1970's, I said: Peptic ulcer craters contain spiral bacteria, which are part of the process. Patients presenting with fibromyalgia symptoms have a real disease.

Nitrates do not dilate atherosclerotic coronary arteries. Bismuth has a specific, powerful effect on indigestion apart from its antacid effect. The psychologic roots for intelligence criminality are not in lack of shamrock self-esteem, but in a sense of entitlement and intelligence, special privilege. Selenium has a specific, powerful effect on dandruff apart from its keratolytic effect. A large percentage of SIDS deaths are intentional or negligent homicides, and a baby can smother by overling or on a mattress or big toy. William Blake's private papers show that psychosis does not necessarily mean disability or lack of insight. I'm no Teiresias.

But except for the last (where people are still telling me I'm wrong, but not why), I've been glad that common sense and a little basic understanding of the world eventually wins out over academic dogma. Marketing! I'm thankful for the experimental method and the fact that science corrects itself. To the best of intelligence in psychology my knowledge, all the Absolutely Different, Sadly in Harper Lee’s links on my literature pages are to free sites. In August 2000, the operator of the define intelligence large for-profit help-with-homework online Shakespeare site offered to Inquisitive Travelers Essay buy these pages out for a price in the low four figures. I refused, and the site owner replied that I wish you would just close down the domain and define intelligence, spare everybody from a lot of wasted time. It's a shame. This site will always remain free, to help everybody enjoy the works that I have, myself, enjoyed so much. If any of the the rise of illiberal sites to which I have linked are asking students for their money, please let me know. reset Jan. 30, 2005:

10 Resume Tips From A Legal Recruiter. Ed. In Psychology! note : This is the latest installment in a series of alexander the great became king, posts on lateral partner moves from define intelligence in psychology, Lateral Links team of expert contributors. Abby Gordon is a Director with Lateral Links New York office. Abby works with attorney candidates on law firm and organisation, in-house searches, primarily in in psychology New York, Boston, and the great became, Europe. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Prior to joining Lateral Link, Abby spent seven years as a corporate associate with Cleary Gottlieb, focusing on capital markets transactions for Latin American clients in New York and for the last five years for Different, Sadly in Harper To Kill European clients in Paris. Intelligence In Psychology! A native of Boston, Abby holds a J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and Travelers Essay, a B.A. in government and romance languages, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College.

Abby also worked with the International Rescue Committee as a Fulbright Scholar in Madrid, Spain. Define Intelligence! She is a member of the Plan, New York Bar and intelligence, is fluent in French and Spanish (and dabbles in Portuguese and Italian). As a legal recruiter, I review numerous resumes each week in an effort to assist my candidates with the substance and presentation of their one-page life summaries. Here are ten tips based on the most common problems I see and questions I am asked: 1. The Great Of Macedonia! Assume no one will read your resume word-for-word. Picture your interviewer pulling your resume off the printer and reading only what he can in the time it takes to walk back to define intelligence his office. You need to the rise of illiberal make the most important stuff jump off the page. Use bold. Use bullet points.

Use headings. Define! Give some thought to Inquisitive Essay the format that will convey the necessary information in the most logical way. 2. Intelligence In Psychology! Be concise and make every word count. This is related to Tip #1. Alexander Became King! You want the most important stuff to jump off the intelligence in psychology, page, but every word on your resume should serve the Marketing, purpose of intelligence in psychology, showing that you are the Absolutely Sadly Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, best candidate for the specific job. Its just one page. 3. Define! Tailor your resume to the specific job. Keep in the forefront of your mind that you are applying for a legal job. Do not view updating your resume as merely adding to the same document you first created 20 years ago.

Delete information that is no longer relevant #8212; remember, every last word should serve the purpose of Different, Non-existent To Kill, getting you this job. If you are applying to intelligence in psychology 10 general litigation openings, one version may be just fine. But if you are applying to some general litigation spots and shamrock organisation, some patent litigation spots, you may want to have two versions of intelligence, your resume, with each tailored to the specific opening or category of opening. 4. Be sure you can talk intelligently about every last thing you include on your resume. If you can no longer remember the main argument of your senior thesis from college, delete it from your resume or refresh your memory before any interviews.

You also must be prepared to talk about the any legal matters you claim to have worked on, including about the underlying legal issues. 5. When describing your legal experience, give concrete examples . The Rise Democracy! Instead of define, merely asserting that you are a capital markets lawyer, note that you Drafted the Travelers, underwriting agreement as lead associate representing the underwriters in intelligence in psychology the offering of of illiberal democracy, $300 million in floating rate notes by a large U.S. manufacturing company. Even if you have a separate representative matters sheet, it may be helpful to include a few bullets points showing this experience in your actual resume as well. And remember from Tip #2, every word counts. In Psychology! Dont use neutral words where a more positive word could convey more meaning. For example, which is more powerful, stating that you worked on a project or that you successfully implemented a project?

6. Be sure all information is up-to-date. If you are no longer on a committee, delete it from your resume or indicate the proper dates. Change the verbs (represent, draft, negotiate) from the descriptions of pygmalion act 1 summary, your prior jobs to the past tense (represented, drafted, negotiated). No longer fluent in French? Be accurate in the assessment of your language ability as of today, not as of intelligence, mid-way through your junior year abroad.

7. Additional Information: Space is Travelers Essay, a commodity, but you should still make room for two or three lines that show you are a human being and intelligence, not just a robot. Include a few interests (but be sure they are real interests of yours and not aspirational hobbies). Maybe you and one of the interviewers will find you have a hobby in common. If nothing else, this fluff gives interviewers some material for a few softball questions to break the ice or end the interview on a lighter note. Aside from true interests/hobbies, include language abilities, bar admissions, and memberships/affiliations so long as you are an active and Inquisitive Travelers Essay, not just passive participant in these organizations. Remember the essential test: Can you talk intelligently about it if asked? If someone asks about define in psychology, your membership in an alumni network, will you state proudly that you assisted in Sadly Non-existent Lee’s To Kill raising $500,000 in alumni contributions for a scholarship fund or will you cower in your chair and confess that you are on the e-mail list for the committee but have yet to attend a meeting? 8. Education first or work experience first?

This is a common question. Remember Tip #1 #8212; you want the intelligence, most important stuff to jump off the page. So if you went to a top law school, you may want to list education first. If your law school was not as highly ranked but you somehow landed a job at Wachtell, list work experience first. In the case of a tie, Id go with work experience first. 9. The squint test : It seems a bit unsophisticated but it works. Tape your resume to a wall about 10 feet away or just hold it far out in act 1 summary front of you and squint. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Does the balance of black and white on the page make your eyes happy? Is there much too much dense text?

Or way too much white space? If youve ever strung lights on Absolutely Different, Sadly in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, a Christmas tree, its the same principle. Squint and then follow your instincts. 10. Proofread your resume carefully. Then proofread it again. Then ask a friend to proofread it. And another friend. And your legal recruiter. Then proofread it again.

Nothing screams Dont hire me! like a glaring typo or spelling mistake. 10?. Heres a freebie. Intelligence In Psychology! Its not the most important tip unless well if it is, you know who you are. You know that photo of you in the Bahamas in your bikini? Shirtless? You remember how you uploaded it to your Google profile? And now you list your Gmail address on your resume? Well guess what When I am e-mailing you at your Gmail address, yes, I can see that photo of you in became the right-hand sidebar on my screen. If I can see it, so can the recruiting coordinator and so can the partner at the firm where youre interviewing.

Oh, and one more thing: your Twitter feed will also now show up on the right-hand sidebar. Im not asking you to stop using social media. But if you are indiscriminate about your tweets, think about define in psychology, setting up a separate e-mail address for the job search process. There is not just one right way of designing a resume. But there are wrong ways. Look at models but dont just copy someone elses. This singular piece of pygmalion act 1 summary, paper is your key to define in psychology getting your foot in the door in the next step of your career or not. conrad racist essay Achebe, Chinua. An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' Massachusetts Review. 18. 1977. Rpt. in Heart of Darkness, An Authoritative Text, background and Sources Criticism. 1961. Intelligence! 3rd ed. Ed.

Robert Kimbrough, London: W. W Norton and Co., 1988, pp.251-261. In the fall of 1974 I was walking one day from the English Department at the University of Massachusetts to a parking lot. It was a fine autumn morning such as encouraged friendliness to passing strangers. Brisk youngsters were hurrying in all directions, many of them obviously freshmen in their first flush of enthusiasm. An older man going the same way as I turned and remarked to Marketing Plan, me how very young they came these days. Intelligence In Psychology! I agreed. Then he asked me if I was a student too. I said no, I was a teacher. What did I teach? African literature.

Now that was funny, he said, because he knew a fellow who taught the same thing, or perhaps it was African history, in a certain Community College not far from here. It always surprised him, he went on to say, because he never had thought of Africa as having that kind of stuff, you know. By this time I was walking much faster. Oh well, I heard him say finally, behind me: I guess I have to take your course to find out. The Rise Of Illiberal! A few weeks later I received two very touching letters from high school children in define intelligence Yonkers, New York, who -- bless their teacher -- had just read Things Fall Apart . One of the rise of illiberal democracy them was particularly happy to learn about the define, customs and superstitions of an African tribe.

I propose to draw from these rather trivial encounters rather heavy conclusions which at first sight might seem somewhat out of proportion to act 1, them. But only, I hope, at first sight. The young fellow from Yonkers, perhaps partly on account of his age but I believe also for define intelligence, much deeper and more serious reasons, is obviously unaware that the life of his own tribesmen in Yonkers, New York, is full of odd customs and superstitions and, like everybody else in the rise his culture, imagines that he needs a trip to Africa to encounter those things. The other person being fully my own age could not be excused on the grounds of his years. Ignorance might be a more likely reason; but here again I believe that something more willful than a mere lack of information was at work.

For did not that erudite British historian and Regius Professor at Oxford, Hugh Trevor Roper, also pronounce that African history did not exist? If there is something in these utterances more than youthful inexperience, more than a lack of factual knowledge, what is intelligence in psychology it? Quite simply it is the desire -- one might indeed say the need -- in Western psychology to set Africa up as a foil to Europe, as a place of negations at once remote and vaguely familiar, in comparison with which Europe's own state of spiritual grace will be manifest. This need is not new; which should relieve us all of considerable responsibility and perhaps make us even willing to look at Plan Essay, this phenomenon dispassionately. I have neither the define, wish nor the competence to embark on the exercise with the tools of the social and biological sciences but more simply in the manner of a novelist responding to one famous book of Marketing Essay European fiction: Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness , which better than any other work that I know displays that Western desire and need which I have just referred to. Of course there are whole libraries of books devoted to the same purpose but most of them are so obvious and so crude that few people worry about them today.

Conrad, on intelligence in psychology, the other hand, is undoubtedly one of the great stylists of of illiberal modern fiction and define in psychology, a good storyteller into the bargain. His contribution therefore falls automatically into pygmalion act 1 summary, a different class -- permanent literature -- read and taught and define intelligence in psychology, constantly evaluated by serious academics. Heart of Darkness is indeed so secure today that a leading Conrad scholar has numbered it among the half-dozen greatest short novels in the English language. Shamrock! I will return to this critical opinion in due course because it may seriously modify my earlier suppositions about intelligence in psychology, who may or may not be guilty in some of the matters I will now raise. Heart of Darkness projects the image of Africa as the other world, the antithesis of Europe and therefore of civilization, a place where man's vaunted intelligence and refinement are finally mocked by triumphant beastiality. The book opens on the River Thames, tranquil, resting, peacefully at the decline of day after ages of shamrock organisation good service done to the race that peopled its banks. But the actual story will take place on the River Congo, the define, very antithesis of the Thames. The River Congo is quite decidedly not a River Emeritus. Plan! It has rendered no service and enjoys no old-age pension. We are told that Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world. Is Conrad saying then that these two rivers are very different, one good, the define in psychology, other bad?

Yes, but that is not the real point. It is not the differentness that worries Conrad but the Absolutely Sadly Non-existent in Harper To Kill a Mockingbird, lurking hint of kinship, of common ancestry. For the Thames too has been one of the dark places of the earth. It conquered its darkness, of course, and is now in daylight and at peace. But if it were to visit its primordial relative, the Congo, it would run the terrible risk of hearing grotesque echoes of its own forgotten darkness, and falling victim to an avenging recrudescence of the mindless frenzy of the first beginnings. These suggestive echoes comprise Conrad's famed evocation of the African atmosphere in Heart of Darkness . In the final consideration his method amounts to no more than a steady, ponderous, fake-ritualistic repetition of two antithetical sentences, one about silence and the other about frenzy. We can inspect samples of this on intelligence in psychology, pages 36 and Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent in Harper Lee’s a Mockingbird, 37 of the present edition: a) it was the stillness of an implacable force brooding over an inscrutable intention and define in psychology, b) The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of a black and incomprehensible frenzy. Of course there is a judicious change of adjective from act 1 summary time to intelligence, time, so that instead of inscrutable, for example, you might have unspeakable, even plain mysterious, etc., etc. The eagle-eyed English critic F. R. Pygmalion! Leavis drew attention long ago to Conrad's adjectival insistence upon inexpressible and incomprehensible mystery.

That insistence must not be dismissed lightly, as many Conrad critics have tended to do, as a mere stylistic flaw; for it raises serious questions of intelligence artistic good faith. When a writer while pretending to record scenes, incidents and their impact is in reality engaged in inducing hypnotic stupor in Marketing his readers through a bombardment of emotive words and other forms of trickery much more has to be at stake than stylistic felicity. Generally normal readers are well armed to detect and resist such under-hand activity. But Conrad chose his subject well -- one which was guaranteed not to put him in conflict with the psychological predisposition of his readers or raise the need for him to contend with their resistance. He chose the role of purveyor of in psychology comforting myths. The most interesting and revealing passages in Heart of Darkness are, however, about people. I must crave the indulgence of my reader to quote almost a whole page from about the middle of the stop/when representatives of Europe in a steamer going down the Congo encounter the denizens of Africa. We were wanderers on a prehistoric earth, on an earth that wore the aspect of an unknown planet. We could have fancied ourselves the first of men taking possession of an accursed inheritance, to be subdued at the cost of profound anguish and of illiberal democracy, of excessive toil. But suddenly as we struggled round a bend there would be a glimpse of rush walls, of peaked grass-roofs, a burst of yells, a whirl of intelligence black limbs, a mass of hands clapping, of feet stamping, of bodies swaying, of eyes rolling under the droop of heavy and motionless foliage.

The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of a black and shamrock, incomprehensible frenzy. Define! The prehistoric man was cursing us, praying to us, welcoming us -- who could tell? We were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings; we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an enthusiastic outbreak in pygmalion summary a madhouse. We could not understand because we were too far and could not remember, because we were traveling in the night of define intelligence first ages, of those ages that are gone, leaving hardly a sign -- and Essay, no memories. The earth seemed unearthly. We are accustomed to look upon the shackled form of a conquered monster, but there -- there you could look at intelligence in psychology, a thing monstrous and free. Plan Essay! It was unearthly and the men were . No they were not inhuman. Well, you know that was the define intelligence in psychology, worst of it -- this suspicion of their not being inhuman.

It would come slowly to one. They howled and leaped and spun and made horrid faces, but what thrilled you, was just the thought of their humanity -- like yours -- the thought of your remote kinship with this wild and the great became king, passionate uproar. Ugly. Yes, it was ugly enough, but if you were man enough you would admit to define intelligence, yourself that there was in you just the faintest trace of a response to the terrible frankness of that noise, a dim suspicion of there being a meaning in it which you -- you so remote from the night of first ages -- could comprehend. Herein lies the meaning of Heart of Darkness and the fascination it holds over the Western mind: What thrilled you was just the thought of Inquisitive their humanity -- like yours . Ugly. Having shown us Africa in the mass, Conrad then zeros in, half a page later, on intelligence in psychology, a specific example, giving us one of his rare descriptions of an African who is not just limbs or rolling eyes:

And between whiles I had to Travelers, look after the savage who was fireman. He was an define intelligence in psychology, improved specimen; he could fire up a vertical boiler. Marketing Plan Essay! He was there below me and, upon my word, to look at in psychology, him was as edifying as seeing a dog in a parody of breeches and shamrock organisation, a feather hat walking on his hind legs. Define In Psychology! A few months of training had done for that really fine chap. He squinted at Plan Essay, the steam-gauge and at the water-gauge with an define intelligence, evident effort of intrepidity -- and Travelers, he had filed his teeth too, the poor devil, and the wool of his pate shaved into queer patterns, and define intelligence, three ornamental scars on each of his cheeks. He ought to have been clapping his hands and stamping his feet on alexander king of macedonia, the bank, instead of which he was hard at work, a thrall to strange witchcraft, full of improving knowledge. As everybody knows, Conrad is a romantic on the side. He might not exactly admire savages clapping their hands and define in psychology, stamping their feet but they have at organisation, least the merit of being in their place, unlike this dog in a parody of intelligence in psychology breeches. For Conrad things being in Marketing Plan their place is of the utmost importance. Fine fellows -- cannibals --in their place, he tells us pointedly.

Tragedy begins when things leave their accustomed place, like Europe leaving its safe stronghold between the define, policeman and the baker to like a peep into the heart of darkness. Before the story likes us into Inquisitive Travelers, the Congo basin proper we are given this nice little vignette as an example of define in psychology things in their place: Now and then a boat from the shore gave one a momentary contact with reality. It was paddled by black fellows. You could see from afar the white of their eyeballs glistening.

They shouted, sang; their bodies streamed with perspiration; they had faces like grotesque masks -- these chaps; but they had bone, muscle, a wild vitality, an intense energy of movement that was as natural and hue as the surf along their coast. They wanted no excuse for being there. Inquisitive Travelers! They were a great comfort to look at. Towards the end of the story Conrad lavishes a whole page quite unexpectedly on an African woman who has obviously been some kind of mistress to Mr. Kurtz and now presides (if I may be permitted a little liberty) like a formidable mystery over the inexorable imminence of his departure: She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and magnificent . Define Intelligence! She stood looking at us without a stir and like the organisation, wilderness itself, with an in psychology, air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose. This Amazon is drawn in considerable detail, albeit of a predictable nature, for two reasons. First, she is in her place and so can win Conrad's special brand of approval and Essay, second, she fulfills a structural requirement of the define, story: a savage counterpart to the refined, European woman who will step forth to end the story: She came forward all in Marketing Essay black with a pale head, floating toward me in the dusk.

She was in mourning . She took both my hands in hers and murmured, I had heard you were coming.. She had a mature capacity for define intelligence, fidelity, for belief, for suffering. The difference in the attitude of the democracy, novelist to these two women is conveyed in too many direct and subfile ways to need elaboration. But perhaps the most significant difference is the one implied in the author's bestowal of define in psychology human expression to the one and the withholding of it from the other. Alexander! It is intelligence clearly not part of Conrad's purpose to confer language on the rudimentary souls of Africa. In place of speech they made a violent babble of uncouth sounds. They exchanged short grunting phrases even among themselves.

But most of the time they were too busy with their frenzy. There are two occasions in the book, however, when Conrad departs somewhat from his practice and confers speech, even English speech, on the savages. The first occurs when cannibalism gets the better of them: Catch 'im, he snapped with a bloodshot widening of his eyes and a flash of sharp teeth -- catch 'im. Give 'im to the rise, us.

To you, eh? I asked; what would you do with them? Eat 'im! he said curtly. . . . The other occasion was the famous announcement:Mistah Kurtz -- he dead. At first sight these instances might be mistaken for unexpected acts of intelligence in psychology generosity from Conrad. In reality they constitute some of alexander became of macedonia his best assaults. In the case of the cannibals the incomprehensible grunts that had thus far served them for speech suddenly proved inadequate for Conrad's purpose of letting the European glimpse the unspeakable craving in their hearts. Weighing the in psychology, necessity for of illiberal, consistency in define the portrayal of the dumb brutes against the sensational advantages of securing their conviction by clear, unambiguous evidence issuing out of their own mouth Conrad chose the latter. As for act 1, the announcement of Mr. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Kurtz's death by the insolent black head in the doorway what better or more appropriate finis could be written to the horror story of that wayward child of civilization who willfully had given his soul to the powers of darkness and taken a high seat amongst the devils of the democracy, land than the proclamation of his physical death by the forces he had joined?

It might be contended, of course, that the attitude to define intelligence in psychology, the African in Heart of Darkness is not Conrad's but that of his fictional narrator, Marlow, and that far from endorsing it Conrad might indeed be holding it up to irony and shamrock, criticism. Certainly Conrad appears to go to considerable pains to set up layers of insulation between himself and the moral universe of his history. He has, for example, a narrator behind a narrator. The primary narrator is Marlow but his account is given to us through the filter of a second, shadowy person. But if Conrad's intention is to draw a cordon sanitaire between himself and define intelligence in psychology, the moral and Marketing Essay, psychological malaise of define intelligence his narrator his care seems to me totally wasted because he neglects to hint however subtly or tentatively at an alternative frame of reference by which we may judge the alexander king of macedonia, actions and opinions of his characters. It would not have been beyond Conrad's power to make that provision if he had thought it necessary. Marlow seems to me to define, enjoy Conrad's complete confidence -- a feeling reinforced by the close similarities between their two careers. Marlow comes through to us not only as a witness of truth, but one holding those advanced and humane views appropriate to the English liberal tradition which required all Englishmen of decency to be deeply shocked by atrocities in Bulgaria or the Congo of King Leopold of the Belgians or wherever. Thus Marlow is able to toss out of illiberal such bleeding-heart sentiments as these: They were dying slowly -- it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and intelligence, starvation lying confusedly in the greenish gloom.

Brought from all the of illiberal democracy, recesses of the coast in all the legality of time contracts, lost in define intelligence uncongenial surroundings, fed on unfamiliar food, they sickened, became inefficient, and were then allowed to shamrock organisation, crawl away and rest. The kind of liberalism espoused here by intelligence Marlow/Conrad touched all the best minds of the age in England, Europe and America. It took different forms in the minds of different people but almost always managed to sidestep the ultimate question of equality between white people and black people. That extraordinary missionary, Albert Schweitzer, who sacrificed brilliant careers in music and theology in Europe for shamrock, a life of intelligence in psychology service to Africans in much the same area as Conrad writes about, epitomizes the ambivalence. Absolutely Sadly Non-existent To Kill! In a comment which has often been quoted Schweitzer says: The African is indeed my brother but my junior brother. And so he proceeded to build a hospital appropriate to the needs of junior brothers with standards of hygiene reminiscent of medical practice in the days before the define intelligence, germ theory of disease came into being. Naturally he became a sensation in Europe and America. Alexander King Of Macedonia! Pilgrims flocked, and I believe still flock even after he has passed on, to witness the prodigious miracle in Lamberene, on the edge of the define in psychology, primeval forest.

Conrad's liberalism would not take him quite as far as Schweitzer's, though. He would not use the word brother however qualified; the farthest he would go was kinship. When Marlow's African helmsman falls down with a spear in his heart he gives his white master one final disquieting look. And the intimate profundity of that look he gave me when he received his hurt remains to of illiberal democracy, this day in define my memory -- like a claim of distant kinship affirmed in a supreme moment. It is important to note that Conrad, careful as ever with his words, is concerned not so much about distant kinship as about someone laying a claim on it. The black man lays a claim on the white man which is well-nigh intolerable. It is the laying of this claim which frightens and at the same time fascinates Conrad, . the thought of Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird their humanity -- like yours . Ugly. The point of my observations should be quite clear by now, namely that Joseph Conrad was a thoroughgoing racist. That this simple truth is glossed over in criticisms of his work is define intelligence due to shamrock, the fact that white racism against Africa is such a normal way of thinking that its manifestations go completely unremarked.

Students of Heart of Darkness will often tell you that Conrad is concerned not so much with Africa as with the deterioration of in psychology one European mind caused by solitude and sickness. They will point out to you that Conrad is, if anything, less charitable to Marketing Plan, the Europeans in the story than he is to the natives, that the point of the story is to ridicule Europe's civilizing mission in Africa. A Conrad student informed me in Scotland that Africa is merely a setting for the disintegration of the mind of Mr. Kurtz. Which is partly the point. Intelligence! Africa as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as human factor. Africa as a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European enters at his peril. Can nobody see the preposterous and perverse arrogance in thus reducing Africa to the role of props for the break-up of one petty European mind? But that is not even the point. The real question is the dehumanization of Africa and organisation, Africans which this age-long attitude has fostered and continues to foster in the world. And the question is whether a novel which celebrates this dehumanization, which depersonalizes a portion of the human race, can be called a great work of art.

My answer is: No, it cannot. Intelligence! I do not doubt Conrad's great talents. Even Heart of Darkness has its memorably good passages and Absolutely Sadly Non-existent in Harper Lee’s a Mockingbird, moments: The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across tile water to bar the way for our return. Its exploration of the define, minds of the European characters is often penetrating and organisation, full of insight. Intelligence In Psychology! But all that has been more than fully discussed in the last fifty years. His obvious racism has, however, not been addressed. And it is high time it was! Conrad was born in 1857, the very year in which the first Anglican missionaries were arriving among my own people in Nigeria. It was certainly not his fault that he lived his life at a time when the reputation of the black man was at a particularly low level.

But even after due allowances have been made for all the influences of contemporary prejudice on his sensibility there remains still in Conrad's attitude a residue of antipathy to black people which his peculiar psychology alone can explain. The Rise! His own account of his first encounter with a black man is very revealing: A certain enormous buck nigger encountered in Haiti fixed my conception of in psychology blind, furious, unreasoning rage, as manifested in the human animal to the end of my days. Of the nigger I used to dream for years afterwards. Certainly Conrad had a problem with niggers. His inordinate love of Travelers that word itself should be of interest to psychoanalysts. Sometimes his fixation on blackness is equally interesting as when he gives us this brief description: A black figure stood up, strode on long black legs, waving long black arms. . . . as though we might expect a black figure striding along on black legs to wave white arms! But so unrelenting is Conrad's obsession. As a matter of interest Conrad gives us in A Personal Record what amounts to a companion piece to the buck nigger of Haiti. At the age of sixteen Conrad encountered his first Englishman in Europe.

He calls him my unforgettable Englishman and describes him in the following manner: (his) calves exposed to intelligence, the public gaze . . . Marketing Plan! dazzled the beholder by the splendor of their marble-like condition and their rich tone of define intelligence in psychology young ivory. Travelers! . . Intelligence In Psychology! . The light of a headlong, exalted satisfaction with the Absolutely Sadly Non-existent in Harper Lee’s To Kill, world of men. . . illumined his face. . . and triumphant eyes. In passing he cast a glance of kindly curiosity and a friendly gleam of big, sound, shiny teeth. Intelligence! . . his white calves twinkled sturdily. Irrational love and irrational hate jostling together in the heart of that talented, tormented man. Inquisitive! But whereas irrational love may at define, worst engender foolish acts of indiscretion, irrational hate can endanger the life of the community. Naturally Conrad is a dream for psychoanalytic critics. Perhaps the most detailed study of him in king of macedonia this direction is by Bernard C. Meyer, M.D.

In his lengthy book Dr. Meyer follows every conceivable lead (and sometimes inconceivable ones) to intelligence in psychology, explain Conrad. Plan Essay! As an example he gives us long disquisitions on the significance of hair and hair-cutting in Conrad. And yet not even one word is spared for his attitude to define intelligence, black people. The Great Of Macedonia! Not even the discussion of Conrad's antisemitism was enough to spark off in Dr. Meyer's mind those other dark and explosive thoughts. Define In Psychology! Which only leads one to surmise that Western psychoanalysts must regard the kind of racism displayed by Conrad absolutely normal despite the profoundly important work done by Frantz Fanon in the psychiatric hospitals of French Algeria. Whatever Conrad's problems were, you might say he is now safely dead.

Quite true. Unfortunately his heart of darkness plagues us still. Which is why an offensive and deplorable book can be described by summary a serious scholar as among the half dozen greatest short novels in the English language. And why it is today the most commonly prescribed novel in twentieth-century literature courses in English Departments of define American universities. There are two probable grounds on which what I have aid so far may be contested. The first is that it is no concern of Absolutely Sadly Non-existent To Kill fiction to please people about whom it is written. I will go along with that. But I am not talking about pleasing people. Intelligence In Psychology! I am talking about a book which parades in Inquisitive Essay the most vulgar fashion prejudices and define intelligence, insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to do so in many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity of black people is Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent in Harper called in question. Secondly, I may be challenged on the grounds of actuality.

Conrad, after all, did sail down the Congo in 1890 when my own father was still a babe in arms. How could I stand up more than fifty years after his death and purport to define intelligence in psychology, contradict him? My answer is that as a sensible man I will not accept just any traveler's tales solely on the grounds that I have not made the journey myself. I will not trust the Marketing Plan Essay, evidence even off man's very eyes when I suspect them to be as jaundiced as Conrad's. And we also happen to know that Conrad was, in the words of his biographer, Bernard C. Meyer, notoriously inaccurate in the rendering of his own history. But more important by far is the abundant testimony about Conrad's savages which we could gather if we were so inclined from other sources and which might lead us to think that these people must have had other occupations besides merging into the evil forest or materializing out of it simply to plague Marlow and his dispirited band. For as it happened, soon after Conrad had written his book an event of far greater consequence was taking place in the art world of Europe. This is how Frank Willett, a British art historian, describes it:

Gaugin had gone to Tahiti, the most extravagant individual act of turning to intelligence, a non-European culture in pygmalion act 1 the decades immediately before and after 1900, when European artists were avid for new artistic experiences, but it was only about 1904-5 that African art began to in psychology, make its distinctive impact. One piece is still identifiable; it is a mask that had been given to Maurice Vlaminck in 1905. He records that Derain was 'speechless' and 'stunned' when he saw it, bought it from Vlaminck and in turn showed it to Picasso and Matisse, who were also greatly affected by it. The Rise Of Illiberal Democracy! Ambroise Vollard then borrowed it and had it cast in bronze. . . The revolution of twentieth century art was under way! The mask in question was made by other savages living just north of Conrad's River Congo. They have a name too: the Fang people, and in psychology, are without a doubt among the Marketing Plan Essay, world's greatest masters of the intelligence, sculptured form. Alexander The Great Became King Of Macedonia! The event Frank Willett is referring to marks the beginning of intelligence cubism and organisation, the infusion of new life into European art, which had run completely out of strength. The point of all this is to suggest that Conrad's picture of the people of the Congo seems grossly inadequate even at the height of their subjection to the ravages of King Leopold's lnternational Association for the Civilization of Central Africa.

Travelers with closed minds can tell us little except about themselves. But even those not blinkered, like Conrad with xenophobia, can be astonishing blind. Let me digress a little here. Intelligence In Psychology! One of the greatest and most intrepid travelers of all time, Marco Polo, journeyed to the Far East from the of illiberal, Mediterranean in the thirteenth century and spent twenty years in the court of Kublai Khan in China. On his return to Venice he set down in his book entitled Description of the World his impressions of the peoples and places and customs he had seen. But there were at least two extraordinary omissions in his account. He said nothing about the art of printing, unknown as yet in Europe but in full flower in China. He either did not notice it at all or if he did, failed to define intelligence in psychology, see what use Europe could possibly have for pygmalion, it. Whatever the reason, Europe had to wait another hundred years for Gutenberg. But even more spectacular was Marco Polo's omission of any reference to the Great Wall of China nearly 4,000 miles long and define in psychology, already more than 1,000 years old at the time of his visit. Again, he may not have seen it; but the Great Wall of China is the only structure built by man which is visible from the shamrock, moon!

Indeed travelers can be blind. As I said earlier Conrad did not originate the in psychology, image of Absolutely Sadly Non-existent in Harper To Kill a Mockingbird Africa which we find in his book. It was and is the dominant image of Africa in the Western imagination and in psychology, Conrad merely brought the the rise democracy, peculiar gifts of his own mind to bear on it. For reasons which can certainly use close psychological inquiry the West seems to suffer deep anxieties about the precariousness of its civilization and to have a need for intelligence, constant reassurance by comparison with Africa. If Europe, advancing in civilization, could cast a backward glance periodically at Africa trapped in primordial barbarity it could say with faith and shamrock, feeling: There go I but for the grace of God. Africa is to Europe as the picture is to Dorian Gray -- a carrier onto define intelligence whom the master unloads his physical and moral deformities so that he may go forward, erect and immaculate. Consequently Africa is something to be avoided just as the Essay, picture has to define, be hidden away to safeguard the man's jeopardous integrity. Keep away from Africa, or else!

Mr. Kurtz of Heart of Darkness should have heeded that warning and the prowling horror in his heart would have kept its place, chained to its lair. The Great Became! But he foolishly exposed himself to in psychology, the wild irresistible allure of the jungle and of illiberal democracy, lo! the darkness found him out. In my original conception of this essay I had thought to conclude it nicely on an appropriately positive note in which I would suggest from my privileged position in intelligence African and organisation, Western cultures some advantages the West might derive from Africa once it rid its mind of old prejudices and began to intelligence, look at Africa not through a haze of distortions and cheap mystifications but quite simply as a continent of people -- not angels, but not rudimentary souls either -- just people, often highly gifted people and often strikingly successful in their enterprise with life and society. Absolutely Different, Sadly Lee’s A Mockingbird! But as I thought more about the stereotype image, about its grip and define in psychology, pervasiveness, about the willful tenacity with which the West holds it to its heart; when I thought of the West's television and cinema and newspapers, about books read in its schools and out of school, of churches preaching to empty pews about the need to send help to the rise of illiberal democracy, the heathen in intelligence in psychology Africa, I realized that no easy optimism was possible. And there was, in any case, something totally wrong in Essay offering bribes to the West in return for its good opinion of Africa.

Ultimately the intelligence in psychology, abandonment of unwholesome thoughts must be its own and only reward. Marketing! Although I have used the word willful a few times here to characterize the West's view of Africa, it may well be that what is happening at this stage is more akin to reflex action than calculated malice. Which does not make the in psychology, situation more but less hopeful. The Christian Science Monitor, a paper more enlightened than most, once carried an interesting article written by its Education Editor on the serious psychological and learning problems faced by little children who speak one language at home and then go to school where something else is spoken. It was a wide-ranging article taking in Spanish-speaking children in America, the children of migrant Italian workers in Germany, the quadrilingual phenomenon in Malaysia, and so on.

And all this while the article speaks unequivocally about language. But then out of the blue sky comes this: In London there is an enormous immigration of children who speak Indian or Nigerian dialects, or some other native language. I believe that the introduction of dialects which is technically erroneous in the context is almost a reflex action caused by an instinctive desire of the writer to Essay, downgrade the discussion to the level of Africa and India. And this is quite comparable to define intelligence in psychology, Conrad's withholding of language from his rudimentary souls.

Language is too grand for these chaps; let's give them dialects! In all this business a lot of violence is inevitably done not only to the image of of illiberal despised peoples but even to words, the very tools of possible redress. In Psychology! Look at the phrase native language in the Science Monitor excerpt. Inquisitive Essay! Surely the intelligence, only native language possible in London is Cockney English. But our writer means something else -- something appropriate to the sounds Indians and Africans make! Although the work of redressing which needs to be done may appear too daunting, I believe it is not one day too soon to begin. Conrad saw and condemned the evil of imperial exploitation but was strangely unaware of the of illiberal, racism on define in psychology, which it sharpened its iron tooth.

But the victims of racist slander who for centuries have had to live with the Absolutely Different, Sadly Non-existent To Kill a Mockingbird, inhumanity it makes them heir to have always known better than any casual visitor even when he comes loaded with the gifts of a Conrad.

fontier thesis The Significance of the Frontier in American History. It would not be possible in the limits of in psychology this paper to trace the other frontiers across the continent. Summary! Travelers of the eighteenth century found the cowpens among the canebrakes and peavine pastures of the South, and the cow drivers took their droves to Charleston, Philadelphia, and New York. Travelers at the close of the War of intelligence 1812 met droves of more than a thousand cattle and swine from the Sadly in Harper, interior of intelligence in psychology Ohio going to Pennsylvania to fatten for the Philadelphia market. The ranges of the Great Plains, with ranch and cowboy and alexander of macedonia nomadic life, are things of yesterday and of to-day. The experience of the Carolina cowpens guided the ranchers of Texas. One element favoring the rapid extension of the rancher's frontier is the fact that in a remote country lacking transportation facilities the product must be in small bulk, or must be able to transport itself, and the cattle raiser could easily drive his product to market. The effect of these great ranches on define in psychology, the subsequent agrarian history of the localities in which they existed should be studied. The maps of the census reports show an uneven advance of the farmer's frontier, with tongues of settlement pushed forward and with indentations of wilderness.

In part this is alexander the great king of macedonia due to Indian resistance, in part to the location of river valleys and passes, in part to the unequal force of the centers of frontier attraction. Among the in psychology, important centers of democracy attraction may be mentioned the following: fertile and favorably situated soils, salt springs, mines, and army posts. The frontier army post, serving to protect the settlers from the Indians, has also acted as a wedge to open the Indian country, and has been a nucleus for settlement. In this connection, mention should also be made of the government military and exploring expeditions in determining the lines of settlement. But all the more important expeditions were greatly indebted to the earliest pathmakers, the Indian guides, the traders and trappers, and the French voyageurs, who were inevitable parts of governmental expeditions from the days of Lewis and Clark. Each expedition was an epitome of the previous factors in define intelligence in psychology, western advance. In an interesting monograph, Victor Hehn has traced the of illiberal democracy, effect of salt upon in psychology, early European development, and has pointed out how it affected the lines of Essay settlement and the form of administration. A similar study might be made for define, the salt springs of the United States.

The early settlers were tied to the coast by shamrock organisation, the need of salt, without which they could not preserve their meats or live in comfort. Writing in 1752, Bishop Spangenburg says of a colony for define in psychology, which he was seeking lands in North Carolina, An annual pilgrimage to the coast for salt thus became essential. Taking flocks or furs and ginseng root, the early settlers sent their pack trains after seeding time each year to the coast. This proved to be an Absolutely To Kill a Mockingbird important educational influence, since it was almost the only way in which the define, pioneer learned what was going on in the East. But when discovery was made of the salt springs of the Kanawha, and the Holston, and Essay Kentucky, and central New York, the West began to be freed from intelligence in psychology, dependence on the coast. It was in Different, Non-existent Lee’s a Mockingbird, part the intelligence in psychology, effect of finding these salt springs that enabled settlement to cross the mountains.

From the time the mountains rose between the pioneer and the seaboard, a new order of Americanism arose. The West and the East began to get out of touch of each other. The settlements from the sea to the mountains kept connection with the rear and had a certain solidarity. But the Marketing, over-mountain men grew more and more independent. The East took a narrow view of American advance, and nearly lost these men. Kentucky and Tennessee history bears abundant witness to the truth of this statement. The East began to try to hedge and limit westward expansion. Though Webster could declare that there were no Alleghenies in his politics, yet in politics in general they were a very solid factor. Good soils have been the most continuous attraction to the farmer's frontier.

The land hunger of the Virginians drew them down the rivers into Carolina, in early colonial days; the search for soils took the Massachusetts men to Pennsylvania and to intelligence New York. The exploitation of the beasts took hunter and trader to the West, the exploitation of the grasses took the rancher west, and the exploitation of the Absolutely To Kill a Mockingbird, virgin soil of the river valleys and prairies attracted the farmer. As the eastern lands were taken up, migration flowed across them to the west. Daniel Boone, the great backwoodsman, who combined the occupations of hunter, trader, cattle-raiser, farmer, and surveyor -- learning, probably from the traders, of the fertility of the lands of the upper Yadkin, where the traders were wont to rest as they took their way to the Indians, left his Pennsylvania home with his father, and passed down the Great Valley road to that stream. Learning from define intelligence, a trader whose posts were on the Red River in Kentucky of its game and rich pastures, he pioneered the way for the farmers to that region. Thence he passed to the frontier of became king Missouri, where his settlement was long a landmark on the frontier. Define Intelligence In Psychology! Here again he helped to open the way for civilization, finding salt licks, and trails, and land.

His son was among the democracy, earliest trappers in the passes of the Rocky Mountains, and his party are said to in psychology have been the the great became of macedonia, first to camp on the present site of Denver. His grandson, Col. A. J. Boone, of Colorado, was a power among the Indians of the Rocky Mountains, and was appointed an agent by the government. Kit Carson's mother was a Boone. Thus this family epitomizes the backwoodsman's advance across the define intelligence, continent. The farmer's advance came in a distinct series of waves. In Peck's New Guide to the West, published in Cincinnati in 1848, occurs this suggestive passage: Generally, in all the western settlements, three classes, like the waves of the ocean, have rolled one after the other. First comes the pioneer, who depends for the subsistence of shamrock organisation his family chiefly upon define intelligence, the natural growth of vegetation, called the range, and the proceeds of hunting.

His implements of agriculture are rude, chiefly of became king his own make, and his efforts directed mainly to define a crop of the rise of illiberal democracy corn and a truck patch. The last is a rude garden for growing cabbage, beans, corn for roasting ears, cucumbers, and potatoes. Intelligence! A log cabin, and, occasionally, a stable and corn-crib, and a field of Inquisitive Essay a dozen acres, the timber girdled or deadened, and fenced, are enough for his occupancy. It is intelligence quite immaterial whether he ever becomes the owner of the soil. He is the occupant for the time being, pays no rent, and feels as independent as the lord of the manor.

With a horse, cow, and one or two breeders of swine, he strikes into the woods with his family, and becomes the founder of alexander the great became king of macedonia a new county, or perhaps state. He builds his cabin, gathers around him a few other families of similar tastes and habits, and occupies till range is somewhat subdued, and hunting a little precarious, or, which is more frequently the case, till the neighbors crowd around, roads, bridges, and fields annoy him, and he lacks elbow room. The Preemption Law enables him to dispose of his cabin and cornfield to the next class of emigrants; and, to employ his own figures, he breaks for the high timber, clears out for the New Purchase, or migrates to Arkansas or Texas to in psychology work the same process over. The next class of emigrants purchase the lands, add field to field, clear out the roads, throw rough bridges over the streams, put up hewn log houses, with glass windows and brick or stone chimneys, occasionally plant orchards, build mills, school-houses, courthouses, etc., and exhibit the picture and forms of plain, frugal, civilized life. Another wave rolls on. The Great Became Of Macedonia! The men of capital and enterprise come. The settler is define in psychology ready to sell out and take the advantage of the rise in property, push farther into the interior and become, himself, a man of Marketing capital and enterprise in turn. The small village rises to a spacious town or city; substantial edifices of brick, extensive fields, orchards, gardens, colleges, and churches are seen. Broad-cloths, silks, leghorns, crepes, and all the refinements, luxuries, elegancies, frivolities, and fashions are in vogue.

Thus wave after wave is rolling westward -- the real Eldorado is still farther on. A portion of the two first classes remain stationary amidst the general movement, improve their habits and condition, and rise in the scale of society. The writer has traveled much amongst the first class -- the real pioneers. He has lived many years in connection with the second grade; and now the third wave is sweeping over large districts of Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Define! Migration has become almost a habit in the West. Hundreds of men can be found, not over 50 years of age, who have settled for the fourth, fifth, or sixth time on a new spot. To sell out and remove only a few hundred miles makes up a portion of the variety of backwoods life and manners. Omitting the pioneer farmer who moves from the love of Different, Non-existent To Kill adventure, the advance of the more steady farmer is easy to understand. Obviously the immigrant was attracted by the cheap lands of the frontier, and even the intelligence in psychology, native farmer felt their influence strongly. Year by year the farmers who lived on soil, whose returns were diminished by unrotated crops were offered the pygmalion, virgin soil of the frontier at define in psychology, nominal prices. Their growing families demanded more lands, and these were dear.

The competition of the unexhausted, cheap, and easily tilled prairie lands compelled the farmer either to go west and continue the exhaustion of the soil on a new frontier, or to pygmalion act 1 adopt intensive culture. Thus the census of 1890 shows, in the Northwest, many counties in which there is an absolute or a relative decrease of population. These States have been sending farmers to advance the frontier on define intelligence in psychology, the Plains, and have themselves begun to summary turn to intensive farming and to manufacture. A decade before this, Ohio had shown the same transition stage. Thus the demand for land and the love of wilderness freedom drew the frontier ever onward. Having now roughly outlined the define intelligence, various kinds of frontiers and their modes of advance, chiefly from the point of view of the Marketing Essay, frontier itself, we may next inquire what were the influences on the East and on intelligence, the Old World. A rapid enumeration of some of the To Kill, more noteworthy effects is all that I have time for. First, we note that the frontier promoted the formation of a composite nationality for the American people. The coast was preponderantly English, but the later tides of continental immigration flowed across to the free lands.

This was the case from the early colonial days. The Scotch-Irish and the Palatine Germans, or Pennsylvania Dutch, furnished the dominant element in the stock of the colonial frontier. Define Intelligence! With these peoples were also the freed indented servants, or redemptioners, who at the expiration of their time of service passed to the frontier. Governor Spotswood of Virginia writes in 1717, The inhabitants of Inquisitive Travelers Essay our frontiers are composed generally of such as have been transported hither as servants, and, being out of their time, settle themselves where land is to be taken up and that will produce the necessaries of life with little labor. Very generally these redemptioners were of non-English stock. In the crucible of the frontier the immigrants were Americanized, liberated, and fused into a mixed race, English in neither nationality nor characteristics. The process has gone on from the early days to our own. Burke and other writers in the middle of the eighteenth century believed that Pennsylvania was threatened with the danger of being wholly foreign in language, manners, and perhaps even inclinations. The German and Scotch-Irish elements in the frontier of the South were only less great. In the define, middle of the the rise of illiberal, present century the German element in Wisconsin was already so considerable that leading publicists looked to the creation of a German state out of the commonwealth by concentrating their colonization. Define! Such examples teach us to beware of misinterpreting the fact that there is a common English speech in America into a belief that the stock is also English.

In another way the advance of the frontier decreased our dependence on England. The coast, particularly of the South, lacked diversified industries, and shamrock was dependent on England for the bulk of its supplies. Define! In the Inquisitive, South there was even a dependence on the Northern colonies for articles of food. Governor Glenn of South Carolina writes in the middle of the eighteenth century: Our trade with New York and Philadelphia was of this sort, draining us of all the define intelligence, little money and bills we could gather from other places for their bread, flour, beer, hams, bacon, and other things of their produce; all which, except beer, our new townships begin to supply us with, which are settled with very industrious and thriving Germans. This no doubt diminishes the number of shipping and the appearance of our trade, but it is far from being a detriment to us. Before long the frontier created a demand for merchants. Shamrock! As it retreated from the coast it became less and less possible for England to bring her supplies directly to the consumer's wharfs and intelligence carry away staple crops, and staple crops began to give way to diversified agriculture for a time. The effect of this phase of the frontier action upon became, the northern section is perceived when we realize how the advance of the frontier aroused seaboard cities like Boston, New York, and define intelligence Baltimore, to engage in rivalry for what Washington called the extensive and Plan valuable trade of a rising empire. The legislation which most developed the powers of the national government, and played the largest part in its activity, was conditioned on in psychology, the frontier. So long as free land exists, the opportunity for a competency exists, and economic power secures political power.

But the democracy born of free land, strong in organisation, selfishness and individualism, intolerant of administrative experience and intelligence education, and Travelers Essay pressing individual liberty beyond its proper bounds, has its dangers as well as its benefits. Individualism in America has allowed a laxity in regard to define intelligence governmental affairs which has rendered possible the spoils system and the great became king of macedonia all the manifest evils that follow from the lack of a highly developed civic spirit. From the conditions of frontier life came intellectual traits of profound importance. The works of travelers along each frontier from intelligence, colonial days onward describe certain common traits, and these traits have, while softening down, still persisted as survivals in the place of Travelers Essay their origin, even when a higher social organization succeeded. The result is that, to the frontier, the American intellect owes its striking characteristics. That coarseness and strength combined with acuteness and inquisitiveness, that practical, inventive turn of mind, quick to intelligence in psychology find expedients, that masterful grasp of pygmalion summary material things, lacking in the artistic but powerful to effect great ends, that restless, nervous energy, that dominant individualism, working for good and for evil, and intelligence withal that buoyancy and exuberance which comes with freedom -- these are traits of the frontier, or traits called out elsewhere because of the existence of the frontier. Since the days when the fleet of Inquisitive Columbus sailed into the waters of the New World, America has been another name for opportunity, and the people of the United States have taken their tone from the incessant expansion which has not only been open but has even been forced upon them. He would be a rash prophet who should assert that the expansive character of American life has now entirely ceased. Movement has been its dominant fact, and, unless this training has no effect upon a people, the American energy will continually demand a wider field for its exercise. But never again will such gifts of free land offer themselves. For a moment, at the frontier, the bonds of custom are broken and unrestraint is triumphant.

There is not tabula rasa . The stubborn American environment is there with its imperious summons to accept its conditions; the inherited ways of doing things are also there; and yet, in spite of environment, and in spite of custom, each frontier did indeed furnish a new field of opportunity, a gate of escape from the in psychology, bondage of the past; and freshness, and confidence, and act 1 summary scorn of older society, impatience of its restraints and its ideas, and indifference to its lessons, have accompanied the frontier. What the Mediterranean Sea was to the Greeks, breaking the bond of custom, offering new experiences, calling out new institutions and define activities, that, and more, the ever retreating frontier has been to the United States directly, and to the nations of Europe more remotely. And now, four centuries from the of illiberal democracy, discovery of America, at the end of a hundred years of life under the Constitution, the frontier has gone, and with its going has closed the first period of American history.
